I had a picture once of the ground at that time taken from overhead against United in the 90s with all the banners and a packed crowd. Think it came from the papers yet unfortunately cannot find on the net.

Stamford Bridge (1909)

Looking at an old map of the area. It reminded me of how close The Bridge was to Lille Bridge. This was the home of London Athletics Club,before they moved to The Bridge when it opened.

Lille Bridge,just to the north west of Stamford Bridge hostel the 1873 FA Cup Final. However it was closed in 1887 after a fire burnt down a stand.

Actually, Lille Bridge Stadium was on the other side of the building to the west of The Bridge in the 1909 photo above.

Seb Coe mentioned The Bridge being an athletics stadium in his column on the official club site.

The legendary Harold Abrahams' and Eric Liddell ran at The Bridge shortly after the 1924 'Chariots of Fire' Olympics

The Bridge hosted the AAA Championships before they moved to White City.

It's amazing to think of how many sports have been played at the Bridge over the years. Off the top of my head I can think of football, cricket, athletics, rugby union, American football, speedway, greyhound racing and car racing.

Supporters in 1954.

And very smart the Chelsea supporters look too.
