Pretty sure your are correct about that. The Scottish players were part of virtually every successful top flight English team until the early to mid 1990s. The decline wasn't obvious at first. However,the Scottish national team have not been to a World Cup Final tournament since 1998. Darren Fletcher at Man Utd was the last Scottish player in a successful top flight English team, I think.

@erskblueAs you say, the decline wasn't obvious at first. Incredible to look back at the number of great Scottish players who have played in England and we at Chelsea have had a few. Sadly, there aren't that many great Scottish players plying their trade in Scotland. Arguably the last decent player in Scotland was Barry Ferguson. A fine player who sensibly didn't go the way of his brother Derek. And to think of the great Scottish wingers over the years: Cooke, Nevin, Cooper, Henderson, Johnston and Wilson. All the players I've listed have played for Chelsea or Rangers but then I'm biased!

My first World Cup sitting watching all the games was Argentina 78 aged 10. If Danny  McGrain had been fit and no Alan Rough in goal Scotland’s squad was unbelievably strong. I think the beginning of the 90s saw less players coming down to play in England that were top draw equivalent of European players coming in to our game.

Alan Rough now that's a name from the past, me to watched my first world cup in 78 aged 9, wanting Scotland to win as England weren't there, and that clown Rough was bloody useless, he also played in the 82 world cup, Scotland always were a joke when it came to keepers, where as at the same time England had Shilton, Clemence, Corrigan and Parkes.

My first world cup was 74 not a great tournament except for Cruyff and this the funniest thing ever to happen on a football pitch.

Danny McGrain was a fine full back. One of the best in the U.K. over the last forty years. Sandy Jardine was good as him. Together the two of them would have made a great full back partnership. Agree, that Scotland has had some poor goalies over the years. It was probably only until the eighties and nineties when the likes of Andy Goram appeared on the scene that things improved. I was at England v Scotland game at Wembley in 1975 when England won 5-1. Stewart Kennedy was in goal for Scotland that day and he was awful.

Wasn't a bad Scotland squad in 1978 but the players and the manager became too complacent and cocky and came undone against Iran and Peru. Great performance against the Dutch but a bit too late by then. The sending home of Willie Johnston for drug taking didn't help.

Read in an interview with Charlie Cooke that he was banned for 4 years in 1971 from the Scottish national side ! This was in Belguim . It involved him going for a heavy drinking session with some Old Firm players. Yet the Old Firm players weren't banned. Crazy. Charlie should have gone to the 1974 World Cup as part of the Scotland squad.

Ally's army off to win the world cup!!!! Remember watching the Holland game round my grandparents house and jumping up and down when Archie Gemmill waltzed through the Dutch defence, other memories from that world cup, Jonny repp, mario Kempe's, Lukay, and an Argentine Wonder kid who didn't play and was only about 16, but was bigged up as the next big thing, I think his name was Diego Madonna or something, wonder what happened to him?

Didn't know about Charlie being banned for four years. What a waste of his talent but then the SFA has made some strange choices over the years. Just had a look at the Scotland squad for 1974 and the wingers were Jimmy Johnstone, Willie Morgan and Peter Lorimer. Charlie was far better than all three of them.

Archie's goal was brilliant. One of the finest in WC history. Some great players in that tournament. If I remember correctly Kempes was the top scorer in the tournament.

Great goal. Arie Haan had his shooting boots on that's for sure- his strike against Italy was a stonker- my favourite long range shot ever.

Mario Kempes was some striker at that World Cup. His strike partner was Leopard Luque. Remember seeing that Argentina team with the young Maradona destroy Scotland at Hampden in a friendly in early June 79. It was 3-1 going on 6-1.

Yeah i remember having yellow and blue goalie gloves with a B on the back. They might have been sold as Gordon Banks gloves,but they were Peter Bonetti goalie gloves to me. This would have been 1977 ish.

Davie Hay and Charlie Cooke were the first two Chelsea players who ' i was ' in the school playground when playing football from 1974-79 at Primary School. Oh and Peter Bonetti when I was in goal. Which was quite often as I enjoyed playing in goals and was far better there than outfield. Not that that in all honesty is saying much looking back!

Remember watching the 79 cup final, Arsenal v utd, Arsenal 2 up and game nearing end, donned my kit, put on my bonnetti gloves and went up park, got home later for tea to hear last 5 mins of game had gone potty and ended 3-2 after utd got back to 2-2

The boys doing their thing after Robbie scores a late winner against Middlesbrough. One of my all time favourite Chelsea photos. Beautiful time to be a Chelsea fan.
