For me there is a lot of players at this club who are not good enough/past it. I will start with players I would get rid of.

Alex- Been a decent enough player for us but is now behind Terry,Luiz and Ivanovic in the pecking order

Paulo Ferrira- Too old, Not good enough anymore.

John Obi Mikel.- Who actually rates this guy

Anelka- Behind the likes of torres, drogba, sturridge etc in the pecking order

Kalou- Not good enough

We obviously need to strength in certain areas- Mainly defence. For me we should try and sign the following.

Leighton Baines- Really like him as a player. Brilliant fullback. Everton in money problems so would probably sell for right amount

Phil Jagielka/Gary Cahill- Would probs Cahill due to his age.

Obviously there are others i would like to see us sign such as Hazzard,Hulk etc

There is a poem by Robert Browning called the Patriot, which contrasts the rapturous applause of the crowd when he first saves his country with the contempt they throw at him as soon as he fails to satisfy them. It could have been written about these men.

Unfortunately Footballers have the shelf life of a trophy Mistress, and are discarded with about as much sentimentality as one too....Its not that people aren't grateful but the as the song says "The morning sun when its in your face really shows your age....."

Knowing when to move them on is key...

Having said that I'm a sentimental old fool who wants to hang on to the lot of them...

I love Browning. The Bishop Order's His Tomb at St Praxad's is one of my favourite poems. Though I'm not familiar with the Patriot, is it as good as the film? (That said Jason Isaacs does set the standard for hard arse villans in that film)

Defenders & attacking width. If we are to give Torres the season him, DD & Sturridge should fight it out till the end of the season.

Start playing Romeu or Meireles in the holding role & see if Bertrand is the real deal. I like the idea of loaning Lukaka to Everton & to an extent Josh to Swansea.

Trophy mistresses - what a brilliant analogy - but can you imagine anyone ever treating Chopper Harris as a trophy mistress?

Agree, not saying they can't have a place in the team, but we are to over-reliant on them. I think we have players in the squad who are not getting enough of a chance that could help (Josh, Meireles, Romeu, Bertrand).

Heh Heh its not a pretty mental image is it..?

No it's not! I'd have happily had him as my trophy master, though!

We need a dynamic attacking player that can play on the outside on the left. Somebody that can go by somebody, create, and score. I hate to say it, but Neymar would be perfect for that left side. That way Mata can stop playing out of position and play a more central role in the midfield. He becomes a much better distrubuter if he plays in Lampards spot. I love Frank but he has shown that he can't perform consitently. He has a couple bad games, then a couple great games.

I think the players that really need to go are:

Malouda

Anelka

Ferreira

Kalou

Players that I would like to keep, but should be aware that they aren't automatic first starters anymore:

Drogba (I hate to see him go, since I don't believe he's entirely done and I'd love to see him help Lukaku more, but he needs to be aware that he's not first striker and be okay with that)

Bosingwa (he's good back-up, but he should not be playing big games)

Mikel (I don't know what his problem is, it's very frustrating as I believe he should be a very good player, he's got what he needs, great technique, vision and passing, but he's just SO slow and hardly inspiring at all)

Players in:

van der Wiel (As an Ajax fan I'd hate to see him go though. He's been very inconsistent last year, but I think it's because of the World Cup and the fact that he needs a challenge. I think he would step up).

Montolivo (He's gonna be cheap, he has great vision and he can lead if necessary)

Vertonghen or Godìn (again I'd hate so see Vertonghen leave, but I'm going for Chelsea's benefit in this post, Vertonghen is amazing and he will be world class in a few years)

Hulk or any other right winger, I can't seriously come up with any good right winger. Hulk is probably not gonna be cheap.

This is all assuming that Romeu and McEachran get to play. I'd seriously start Romeu the few coming games if I were AVB, to see if he does good in the premier league. McEachran should be obvious by now.

It's actually embarrassing to see certain people listing Terry and Lampard near the top of their lists, look around at the other top clubs in the world, is that how they'd treat two of their best players from the last decade, and maybe even beyond?

Terry and Lampard can both offer a lot to the team, and indeed, even with Torres, Drogba, Mata, Anelka, Sturridge, Malouda etc, Lampard is still our top scorer in the Premier League this season, and has four assists too.

I doubt he had footballers in mind getting paid millions to play their hobby.

This is true, smiley, but it does seem only five minutes ago that JT and Lamps were being hailed as heroes and now some people are screaming for their heads on platters.

Id probably take a gamble on lucas moura. I think he could be signed for around 20M

Are we talking about the most consistent free scoring midfielder in premier league history?? I don't need to use stats to explain how good this man is! he was rushed back from injury last year after a while out, he's our top scorer this season and people still write him off wtf is wrong with some people....

In my opinion these players should go.

Malouda. frustrating only plays well when it suits him.

Anelka. I think being left out says he is off in jan anyway good luck nelks you done us proud.

Kalou. no first touch has not improved.

Players i'd like.

Bale. if we were going to spend 40 mil on a spurs player let it be this one!

cahill. works well with terry for england and would be a solid and cheap signing.

We all know who needs to go

Mikel

Kalou

Anelka

Malouda

Drogba

Paulo & Turnbull can also be moved on but it's not as if they figure a great deal anyway.

Then we have to prepare for the departure of Lamps, Ash & JT in the not too distant future and from now they need to start playing less frequently.

It's not about having heads on platters but being realistic about the contributions these players are able to make as we look to the future. A club who keep players for what they have done in seasons past is a club who wont continue to compete with the big boys.

Needs to go:

Alex (if we buy another CB)

Mikel

Malouda

Kalou

Anelka

Maybe Drogba

Bos (but we need other player in his position)

We should buy:

Hazard (or Munain if we fail to buy Hazard),Cahill/Hummels, Modric, a RB and striker (what about looking a striker in South America? they are cheap and maybe we can get our Higuain/Cavani).

Buy/sell will depend on how we perform this weekend up to Janunary. If we are outside top 6 and plays Europa league by Janunary, will be a tough task to recruit quality players, instead we will have to keep some of the deadwood.

I would absolutely hate to see drogba leave, the man has done so much for our club since he arrived almost 8 years ago now but if he were to leave I would understand it from both is perspective and the clubs. Can't even begin to fathom the logic behind getting rid of terry or lamps, as people have mentioned lamps, even at his ripe old age is still our top scorer and a fantastic servant to the club. In a perfect world I would love to see him eventually take a role at the club similar to what giggs and scholes did at united. Just the vast amounts of experience he would be able to share with our young players would be priceless.

Players such as Malouda I would be far more open to leaving, he has had a fantastic season and a half for us, and we probably wouldnt have won the title in 2010 if it hadnt been for how well he played but he is getting to the stage where he is quite often more of a liability, seems to get very narrow vision at times and probably costs us more chances than he creates.

Kalou seems to be the stock standard answer here and as much as i feel for him it would probably be in everyones best interests, including his to leave. He is 26 years old now and surely he does not want to rot away on the bench for the rest of his career, he has fallen so far down the pecking order now and from what he has shown during his time at the club im not sure he has the ability to perform consistently enough to move his way up it.

Anelka is still a class player but from everything going on i just cant see him being at the club at the start of next season, and perhaps it is the right time for him to leave so we can try and inject some youth into the squad.

Paulo has been a very loyal member of our squad for quite some time but just does not feature any more and would be on wages 70,000 plus i would imagine, so would make sense for him to leave.

Mikel is only 24 years old and has shown more than enough potential to suggest he could yet turn into a good player, very solid defensively however he is just a very unspectacular player which is perhaps why people are so quick to get on his back.

Players we could bring in............ hard to do this list without chalking up a rather sizeable bill!!!

Firstly Eden Hazard, the kid is pure class. Would not come cheap and would not be easy to land him but maybe our young Belgian contingent could sway him towards the bridge. Would be looking at a price tag of 40million or more but the idea of having mata and hazard running our flanks with sturridge in the middle is just awesome. Could be an immense trio for many years to come.

I think the modric ship has sailed unfortunately as he is pure class and we probably wouldnt find ourselves in the hole that we are currently in if we had landed him over the summer. To be honest im not sure how keen he would be to come to us at all now considering how well spurs are doing but i would love to see us go in for him again. If not then maybe its time to have a little bit of faith in our youth and give players like josh a crack.

Lastly, Edison Cavani. Not even sure how we would fit him into our squad but he is a stunning player and any squad in the world would be blessed to have someone of his talents in it
