Legend?

Featured Replies

Chelsea TV always have interviews with legends of the club, under the program title "Legends", and as of a few days ago they started running a Legends program with an interview with...Joe Cole. Now, Joe was a good player for us, and he had one excellent season, he served us well for 7 years, but Robben had more of an impact in his 3 years than Joe did in his 7 if you ask me. Would you class Joe as a legend?

Also, it got me thinking. Are there any players who have now left that you yourself would class as a Chelsea Legend, but not a widely regarded legend like Drogba, Zola, Dixon, Harris etc?

I consider almost everyone who tries hard and plays well a legend. Joe Cole did both, often. He's on the same level as someone like Petrescu or Cudicini.

Zola, Dixon, Harris, Lampard, Terry, Drogba, etc. are all a level above legends.

Cole has a solid reputation with the club. While he isn't the greatest of players to ever wear a blue jersey, he had legitimate passion for the club and that is all I need to count somebody as a legend.

He also was a prime factor in Eden Hazard making his decision to come to Chelsea over those Manchester clubs. That there is enough for me to say legend...vouching for his old club a few years removed.

The word legend is completely overused nowadays. It's a bugbear of mine that every sports person seems to get introduced as a legend of something or other. The other week Frank Sinclair was on a radio show and he was introduced as a "Chelsea legend". That's not to be disrespectful to Frank. He was a proper Chelsea man and never gave less than 100% in any match.

It's just that to me a legend is someone whose contribution to the club was above and beyond that of most others, like Chopper Harris, Dennis Wise or Frank Lampard. Robben and Cole were both very fine players who made a big contribution in their time here, but I wouldn't class them as legends on a par with the above.

disappointing that this subject matter has such a negative tone...I watched the show myself and thought only positive feelings towards joe once again...in fact, I thought of all the critics on here who turned on him after his injury effected his performances and his outrageous crime of simply bigging Liverpool up after he joined them only when we'd released him...

this interview was great and was a reminder of the big impact he made at chelsea...he was very down to earth in the interview, repeated again and again how he was a chelsea fan and still gets a buzz when he hears the liquidator...scored huge goals in title deciders v utd in 2006 and 2010...even he said about the show being called legends, that he considered zola, frank, dixon, osgood, jt as the legends and that he just loved playing for the club he supported...

I would argue he provided more than robben over the years even though he was perhaps not as good if both were at their best...but he did it over a long period, whereas robben, as good as he was, would turn it on occasionally and only when fit...

Cole did a lot for chelsea and anyone who watches the interview would see his passion for the club...bloody hell, he also helped hazard join us...

time for joe to earn respect, if not legend status

i wasn't to happy with how he left and joined loserpool, but he spent 7 years with us and he gave 100%. i can still remember that cheeky goal of his against manure! he is a legend but not quite in the same level as some but if he came back and manage us to what rdm did then he'll be right up the top with them!

For me, Joey is a legend, but not in the traditional sense (osgood, Zola, Chopper, Dixon, Bogarde etc) - But a "modern" legend, as a great lad, popular, heart on his sleeve, full of commitment, and a feeling that he genuaily cared for CFC.

I was thinking... maybe Makelele?

Joey was a crowd favourite at the Bridge, but no way is he a Chelsea legend. He was a great player on his day, and I admired his skill as much as anybody - but I can't help remembering the times when we were losing with about five minutes to go, when instead of going all out for an equaliser Joey was trying little tricks, had me pulling me hair out! Time and a place and all that...

fan fav at chelsea, Not a Legend, very few are, Chopper, Osgood, Lampard, Terry, Drogba, Zola... he will go down as one of the loved chelsea players but Not someone who will have a statue built after them as the likes of Lamps or JT might well be

I agree that the term 'Legend' is bandied around far too often, and should really be used only for those who truly deserve it. Wholehearted commitment to the club, while admirable, is surely not enough to earn such a lofty status. A few key goals here and there contribute to one's case, but I still feel as though someone like Cole falls just short of warranting the title. Players like Zola and Drogba have come to define the club in recent times, and I feel this is the sole criterion by which a player can truly be labelled as legendary. When I think of Chelsea, I see these greats in my mind's eye. I feel this, the overarching contribution that some players have offered the club, is the sole criterion by which we can judge a legend. Cole remains a fantastic person and player, but not a legend for me.

What id like to know is who you consider, and this is the hardest of choices,THE LEGEND of all chelsea time..I think i know the answer..............
