January Transfer Targets - Strikers

As we are just a few days away from the winter transfer window it seems appropriate to consider our options regarding our strike force.

We took a risk in the Summer and we were given the opportunity to sign Falcao but we turned it down. Roman and Di Matteo wanted to give Torres one last chance to shine before we signed someone new, and to be quite honest it has backfired. I'm not bashing Torres, but he is simply not the player he once was. He is not someone you'd put money on to score in a big game. Sturridge was never given a fair run and he looked promising against West Brom but also wasteful. If the news of him moving to Liverpool is true then we will be left with one striker unless we sign somebody else, and I don't think Torres fits the bill. He has been scoring goals but as I mentioned in my last post they have all been quite insignificant even if some have been impressive such as his header against Villa. I'm happy for Torres to stay at the club but he needs competition for his position, because the more he wants to play the harder he will try and score goals, so there are pros and cons. Onto our options:

Falcao: My first and most obvious choice would be Falcao from Athletico Madrid. His goal scoring form has been incredible and he's proved he is worth the £50 million price-tag in his contract. As much as I would like him here it seems increasingly unlikely that he will decide to move because he said himself that he wants to stay until the end of the season, and I doubt Roman would want to shell out another £50 million pounds in January. Chelsea would seem his most likely destination at the moment as I doubt Athletico would want to sell to a rival La Liga club.

David Villa: Although he is a good player he is 31 and it would be a big gamble considering that he has been out injured for a long time. There has been talk of him moving to Chelsea on loan until the end of the season and if true it would have to stay as a loan deal until he proves he can still score goals frequently and in big games. The club must also consider that he is quite old as far as Premier League players go so he may only have a couple of years left in him.

Theo Walcott: He is still a young player at 23 years old and his pace is incredible. I'd personally love to see him at Chelsea but whether he would move to a rival club from Arsenal is unknown. It also depends on whether he decides to sign a new contract or not. He wants to play up front at Arsenal more often and Chelsea would give him that opportunity so it might be an ideal move for him.

There are other options such as Andre Schurrle and Loic Remy but at the moment it is hard to tell who is likely to come to Chelsea as there are a lot of rumours. We would be foolish to not sign a Striker and Torres needs competition. Roll on January!

Considering that Mazacar are real possession players and it's likely we're going to be spending the majority of matches facing teams defending quite deep, it doesn't make much sense to me to invest in someone who's only real quality is a lot of pace. In a team where you're going to be playing on the counter most of the time obviously it would be very handy, but Walcott just doesn't seem like a fit to me, he's wasteful and we need someone who above all else, can finish what mazacar make for them.

Good point. Admittedly we can do better but I wouldn't say he'd be a bad option.

Cant see us getting Falcao this window, the quoted 15 million for Villa doesnt offer value for money given his age, although if we could get him on a loan it would be a good option. I know many members of the forum are against walcott, however i would like him at Chelsea. Young, Hungry, Fast, not a bad finisher, and desperate for the oppertunity to play up top...sounds a lot like sturridge!

Another thing is that I assume Walcott would become our backup striker, although getting more game time than sturridge, but still I feel like we need a striker to displace Torres if we're going to challenge for the EPL/CL again.

Theo Walcott is not coming, where do these rumours keep coming from?

David Villa is very unlikely, Barca will not loan and Chelsea will not buy, and the player will not leave unless he has to.

Falcao will most likely come in the summer provided Chelsea are in the Champions League, he may come next month if some serious asskissing is done.

Most likely, considering the Falcao situation, a "plan B" will have to be considered next month, where multiple options are being explored and a striker that may not necessarily have been at the top of everyone's Christmas list will have to be brought in.

I would rather pass on Falcao and spend the money a bit more wisely. We can get two young players with huge potential than take up Falcao. Not to say Falcao wouldn't be a good signing but lets be honest, these big signings don't really pay dividends for us now do they? Plus I would give Feruz a run out and see what he can do. Sure he is young but so was Owen and Rooney. I feel he has the talent to be quite successful if giving the chance. Playing up top with Mata, Hazard, Oscar, and Moses would be interesting. He would capitalize on their skillful play...

If Falcao won't come until summer, i'd rather we just got Lukaku back for the rest of the season than spend 10 million on some mediocre striker.

I can't comprehend why we would consider paying 15 million for a David Villa when we are so reluctant to offer contract extensions to our current, long serving squad members in that same age group. Anything more than a loan deal currently will have me questioning the judgement of our board, again.

As for Walcott, like Jonty said (and I said pretty much he same thing in the Walcott thread) he could fill the space left by Sturridge if Sturridge left for Liverpool, but I can't imagine him being our first choice CF. We would benefit greatly from a proven CF to challenge/replace Torres and that isn't Walcott.

Falcao could be the final piece in the jigsaw, so to speak. It seems inevitable he will be sold by Atletico, he says he doesn't want to leave just yet but money has a funny way of changing peoples' minds. He's expensive, but if we're serious about establishing ourselves as one of Europe's top teams then this is the calibre of player we have to go for.

Lukaku doesn't want to come back next year let alone the second half of the season. We have a pattern forming where players are happy to be away from Chelsea playing at other clubs. I am sure we will send Feruz and Piazon out as well. Its not exactly a positive to young players who we may be after...

Lukaku coming on today is giving the United backline fits and West Brom seems to be playing better with him on the pitch. For me, Lukaku and Feruz are a future strikers.

I really don't know who we will get,Falco is staying at Atletico,David Villa isn't the answer,Lukaku should stay on loan. Its going to be a hard run in to clinch a champions league place and a provern goal scorer is needed.

We've been linked with Negredo, whose decent enough. Despite all thats been said it still wouldn't surprise me if Falcao came.

Don't want Remy. Would like Schurrie, wouldn't mind Walcott but not sure he is a striker (& certainly wouldn't offer us much more than we have - would be an option if the Marin rumours are true). Then there is Ba, I like him as a player & £7.5m is cheap considering but you have to consider his knee.

We don't need Walcott.

I'm reluctant to sign David Villa on a permanent basis because of his age. Perhaps we could get him on a loan basis.

Apparently Falcao is staying at Atletico Madrid and is not available in the January transfer window.

My choice  is Demba Ba who can be purchased from Newcastle on the cheap. He has Premier league experience and was named Premier Player of the month last December. He is a very good striker and proven goal scorer who scored hat tricks against Blackburn and Stoke earlier in the season.

What the f**k? Tapatalk is still mashing some of my posts into one long paragraphs and not letting me edit them. So... apologies if it makes horrible reading.

I would stay well clear of Ba due to his knees.

I would like Lukaku back, but that's unlikely.

Villa on a loan with Barca paying some of his wages would work, but I doubt it would happen as I'd imagine Barca want him off his books permanently,

Schurrle is a good player, and I wanted him in the summer, but isn't he more of a wide player/winger?  Since adding Moses, Osscar and hazard to the team, I dont see the point in Andre.

Same thoughts on Schurrle apply to Walcott who, despite a good game today, is too hit and miss and as stated pretty much replies on pace.  The only advantage would be Walcott being English, but is that is all, then why get rid of Danny?

Walcott, some insane goals today and seems to love it playing as a centre forward.

True, but would he ever come to us knowing that he would be second choice to Torres, and reluctant to play wide?

Gooners reckon he was waving goodbye at the end. Maybe Star has got it right again with his speculation.

What makes you say he doesn't want to come back next year?

Lukaku never said he doesn't want to come back now or any other time.  He quite rightly said that he doesn't want to sit on our bench.

How dare you let facts get in the way of a good story!

Exactly. Lukaku said he loves Chelsea and his dream is still to be in Chelsea's starting XI, but he doesn't want to come back now and sit on the bench. He wants to play; and if that means staying at West Brom another 6 months -- or another year and a half -- so be it.

I would stay well clear of Ba due to his knees.

Schürrle is a much better all round footballer than Walcott in my opinion. I agree with what you said about Walcott being hit and miss and I think people are getting a bit carried away with his hatrick today considering Newcastle's awful defending and the fact that they've conceded seven goals.

To be fair walcotts contract runs out in the summer so we could probably get him for about 10m if we do that we could sign falcao in the summer and hopefully get rif of torres (and fsw)
