September 2, 201312 yr The more I think about this deal the more I think it makes sense. Let's think about it, we had 4 strikers and the only one we could really shift that late on in the window was Lukaku on loan. Ba's deal fell through and Torres is very, very hard to sell. Lukaku probably wanted more game time as he was aware that he wouldn't get much with 3 other strikers at the club, and to be honest game time is exactly what he needs. He is only 20 after all. To be honest I just can't see this being Jose's decision. Bear in mind that Eto'o has worked with Jose before so who knows, maybe we'll be kissing the ground he walks on by the end of the season. He could score 30 goals for all we know.
September 2, 201312 yr Jose isn't untouchable and quite frankly I strongly disagree with this decision. We've just loaned out our best striker, again. Why? Respecting your opinon and I quite understand your disappointment but I don't think he scored any goals for Chelsea last year so not sure how you determine he is our best striker out of the four we have, perhaps..'potentially our best striker' given the poor form of the other two and the unknown of how Eto will do in the EPL. Lukaku needs to play and this will be a great loan for him, lets see if this time around he can score 17 bearing in mind defences will be more aware of his potential this time around. He is the future, not the present.. just yet. I expect him to be here all of next season if he does well at Goodison. Edited September 2, 201312 yr by CFCCAN
September 2, 201312 yr Looks like Jose opted on keeping the experienced players up front to balance the youth of the attacking midfield. Good luck to Lukaku for the season, now it's on the other three to show they are worth their place. Going to be interesting to see who gets the nod against Everton at the moment I would guess Eto'o and Torres will start most games with Ba third choice.

On paper imo he's definitely our best striker, 17 league goals is a very good return especially when you see the midfield that was supplying him. I think Eto'o can do a job for us and hopefully he'll surprise us all, but if Eto'o gets injured or something we're back to where we were last season. Ba has been diabolical since he came here and I think people who still think Torres can lead our line are kidding themselves. You are right though, it'll be very interesting to see how Lukaku does at a slightly bigger club where defences will be more wary of him, and next season if he comes back and scores 30 goals for us i'll be the first person to admit I was wrong. September 2, 201312 yr Bit disappointed with him going to another loan, but I could see Jose's reasons. At least we didn't send him to Liverpool.
September 2, 201312 yr Oh please. We have 2 retirees and one donkey to choose from up front. You mean 2 donkeys.
September 2, 201312 yr Been disappointed with a few things Mourinho has done so far. This one tops the list. We're going to be banging our heads against the wall when Lukaku and Sturridge are both scoring 20 goals and Eto + Torres struggle to get 10 between them.
September 2, 201312 yr Some rumours in belgium that theres a transfer option at the end of the deal :greysweat:
September 2, 201312 yr Some rumours in belgium that theres a transfer option at the end of the deal :greysweat: As long as the option is to sign him permanently for 80 million, then we're okay. I'm pretty pissed about how the loan has been conducted, not that he is away on loan. After the pre-season trip to America Jose and the rest of the staff knew what we had with Lukaku. We obviously wanted to bring in another striker, and were going to do so regardless - and the representatives must've know about Eto'o at that point, so why not give the lad a week of pre-season to get settled into a new club, rather than giving him the impression that he is going to be in the squad for the upcoming year - just to yank the rug from under his feet.
September 2, 201312 yr Some rumours in belgium that theres a transfer option at the end of the deal :greysweat: There were rumours of Mata having agreed a deal with PSG. And that's all they were. Who knows, maybe lukaku requested it, maybe he felt he wasn't ready after the super cup and wants another season to hone his skills. I have faith

September 3, 201312 yr Had he made that pen, does anyone think he'd still be here? He was gone regardless. They realised that the 4 strikers on the books was too many (pretty obvious when we play a 1 striker system). No one can afford the Torres contract, Ba isn't as good (and I seem to remember some sort of insurability issues from when he was at the Toon and transfer talk was about), and we've only just brought in Eto'o. He was going to have to be moved along, as 4 strikers in the squad is just mental, especially when Schurrle can cover that position.
September 3, 201312 yr At Everton he'll get a lot of playing time with anichebe gone. Still a young player. Got a 15 more years left in his career. He'll be fine.
September 3, 201312 yr he was only gone after ba was not going anywhere Exactly, and it's not like Ba is pushing to leave either. I bet he's on a nice little gig at Chelsea. The penalty miss had nothing to do with it. The signing of Eto'o on a one year deal was a signal that we had other plans for Lukaku, or Ba. So, those plans were well in motion before Lukaku missed his penalty
September 3, 201312 yr I'd rather have kept Lukaku and played him in Ba's spot and let Ba sit in the reserves if he wouldnt agree to go anywhere.

He'll get tons of playing time - that isn't the issue. I'm more concerned that we've signed a young lad from abroad with a lot of promise, sent him off on loan for a season where he's done brilliantly and outscored all our strikers, brought him back in, played him through pre-season, included him in 2 of our first 4 games and given him the responsibility of a game prolonging penalty, and then shipped him off to the other end of the country at the last minute. I hope they sat down with him a few days ago, and explained the situation, and gave him goals for the season that they wanted him to achieve, because if I were that kid, I'd be confused as f**k right now.
September 3, 201312 yr Another shocking decision by the Club ... one of the main reason's for my optimism this season (apart from JM's arrival, of course) was looking forward to Lukaku given a run up front ... he certainly couldn't do worse than the crap generally served up for years now ... I hope this Eto is not passed his best because otherwise we may be left with one of the poorest front lines (again!) this season ... I'm afraid Torres and Ba are just NOT good enough ... full stop. Ps. I'm so pleased for JM's return but I'm not looking at every decision thro' rose tinted spec's ... another poor decision and there's been a few already ... Edited September 3, 201312 yr by cfcblue
September 3, 201312 yr I'm not too upset about this loan deal. Eto'o is only on a one year deal, so obviously the plan is for Eto'o to be the short term solution until Lukaku is ready to lead the line for us in a year's time. Edited September 3, 201312 yr by Kage
September 3, 201312 yr Jose's not shy coming forward ... he would have stopped the loan if he thought necessary ... Ps. my heart sinks every time Torres starts up front because we all know we can do so much better! I hope a 32 year old Eto's the answer because if not, we're short yet again. Certainly Torres and Ba hold little fear for Premiership defenders these days ... Lukaku certainly offered something different ... a Plan B! Edited September 3, 201312 yr by cfcblue
September 3, 201312 yr How much do you think this idea was solely Jose's? I think Jose has a lot to do with the first 11. You can say what you like about early in the season but to me its very clear that neither Lukaku or Mata are in Jose's first choice 11 right now. That being the case, Lukaku is better off on loan. These guys really have 10 years at the top age 20-30 plus a couple of years either side getting there and winding down. You can't waste a season sitting the on bench. its your professional career getting wasted on the sidelines. Noone with any balls would ever put up sitting on bench indefinitely
