Out of position

Featured Replies

Here's another kinda pointless article from me :) I just love this site though

From any era you can think of, what are some examples of Chelsea players playing out of position. The reason behind this is pretty much because we've got Azpi doing the job at left back (I know it's not totally out of position cos it's still a full back spot). I always have admiration for the players who do it because it seems like they are willing to do anything or play anywhere for the Chelsea cause.

Chris Sutton at centre back, he was useless up front so he played there once or twice during games I believe (which is where he started his career).

Gudjohnson was moved into midfield by Mourinho when he came to Chelsea.

Some examples of my own include David Webb going in goal, Paulo Ferreira to right midfield for the 2006 FA Cup semi-final, Belletti to CDM against Sunderland (7-2 win), Malouda at left back against Inter and Azpi and Hazard right mid and striker respectively against Juve last year. Oh and Schurrle against United this year too.

Don't let me hog them all though :)

Either really. Just anyone who's played somewhere different than normal. If there are more examples of players who've played more than a handful out of position, that's even better.

*sigh* You'd think there would be one post where someone couldn't find a way to have a dig at Torres.

You can tell you`re new.

Though a one off the most mental one I remember was Cladio`s brain fart against Monaco. Parker off Huth up front, Melchiot off JFH at full back....what were you thinking of.

They didn't actually play there though, did they? Surely the changes were made and then the team was shifted around? If not, I guess that was Ranieri accepting that he was a DMW.

Didn't Ranieri play a lot of our players out of position in the infamous first leg in Monaco during the CL semis many moons ago?

I still wonder why he put Veron in as a sub.

Oh rats, DKW beat me to the punch.

Yes that was a nightmare of a game and we really could have won the Champions League that year. But in hindsight everything worked out pretty well with Jose winning the trophy, and the rest being history.

Essien and Paulo centre backs against Liverpool

I remember Jose's pre-match press conference where he accepted defeat and is aim by the end of the game was to be the same distance away from Man U at the end of the day (United were playing Arsenal).

Another one was the backline of Bosingwa, Ivan, Ferreira and Cole against Sunderland. OK only one player out of position, but 3 right backs goes a long way to explaining a 3-0 defeat.

The arguments may also persist whether Mikel is naturally best at a cautious DM role as we did sign him on the back of AM performances.

I certainly remember Jimmy playing RM. That man barely did enough work off the ball to play striker let alone in midfield.  :laugh2:  Sealed Tinkerman's fate. Shame because after beating Arsenal (arguably the best team in Europe that year) we really should have won it all.

Not Chelsea related, but this reminded me. Does anyone remember Stuart Pearce, then manager at Man City bringing on David James upront having strikers on the bench. Mental. Can you imagine Jose bringing on Schwarzer up front when were losing with Ba sat on the bench? (Please no 'he'd probably do a better hob replies'   )

Huth Played up front pretty much, and jimmy was right wing back pretty much. Which went well.
