Diego Costa to Chelsea

Chelsea suffered an injury scare in training on Wednesday after Diego Costa pulled up with a hamstring injury, though the severity of the strain remains to be determined.

The Spain international, a £32m signing from Atlético Madrid this summer, will undergo further tests at Cobham and while the initial prognosis appeared grim, there are hopes the injury will not prove as severe as first feared.

The 25-year-old has scored in each of his first two appearances in the Premier League and has swiftly established himself as first-choice and a key member of José Mourinho’s preferred line-up.

Although Chelsea have not written off his chances of featuring at Everton on Saturday, even if the injury rules the Brazil-born forward out for the forseeable future they may sanction Fernando Torres’s mooted loan move to Milan.

Torres is receptive to the possibility of joining Milan, though talks between the Italian club and Chelsea have yet to reach agreement over the Spaniard’s wage package. The striker, who moved from Liverpool for a then British record £50m in January 2011, has two years to run on his £175,000-a-week contract and is unwilling to take a pay cut if he departs Stamford Bridge. Yet having rarely thrived over his three years at the club, there is a recognition that he will only ever play a fringe role at Chelsea after falling behind Costa and even the veteran Didier Drogba in the pecking order.

“Our goal is to take a great striker,” said Milan’s vice-president, Adriano Galliani. “We will see if we achieve our aim, but Fernando Torres? He is a great striker. We are actively working.”

Should Torres leave, Chelsea would seek to add a third senior forward to their ranks before the transfer window closes on Monday, with interest established in Roma’s Mattia Destro and, more intruigingly, the Monaco striker Radamel Falcao.

Falcao is effectively available for loan and would be open to a move to London, even though loan fees and wages combined would see a season-long switch cost around £20m. Chelsea have long coveted Falcao, who shares his agent, Jorge Mendes, with Mourinho.

F**k it, we can still win things this season regardless of the striker situation. We obviously need to bring in another striker, but I still think we'll do well. Does anyone seriously see anyone apart from Man City going head to head with us this season? I don't. Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd, all look vulnerable.

Unfortunately my friend FFP and the number of foreign players rule are facts we have to comply with.

You are wrong to blame Mourinho here.

IF we end up having to rely on two past their best strikers then Sorry Just but Mourinho will have to shoulder the blame - there really is no-one else to blame.

It was his decision to bring back Drogba and offload Lukaku, Ba & Eto'o and now it seems also loan out Bamford. We all thought we looked lightweight if anything happened to Costa. Hopefully he has at least one trick up his sleave before the window closes on Monday, otherwise I think City will be laughing all the way to the title.

Lukaku decided he didn't want to be second fiddle, so it's not entirely Jose's fault with that one. I heard falcao's name being thrown out there as a Costa replacement for a year long loan, but he isn't a powerhouse like Drogs and Costa, so when it comes to games when we need that, is he really a viable option.

Jose is absolutely and unquestionably responsible for the striker situation. I'm not mourinho bashing, I love Jose, but this whole situation has been handled badly, has been short sighted and the risk of an injury to costa has not been considered with little or no contingency planning.

He is the manager, he buys players, selects players, ultimately says yes or no with regards to ins and outs. Whether that actually happens in practice behind the scenes we will never know, but as the face of the club and as the man in charge, Jose shoulders the blame if the striker situation goes tits up.

Interesting to see how this pans out but even if it is not as serious as first thought then it is one significant wake up call to the hierarchy at chelsea that we could find ourselves woefully short up front for big games

Everton is a big game. And for those saying we will be alright without a striker the reason we didn't win at Goodson last season was because we had a rusty and misfiring striker in etoo who had at the time just returned from exile in Russia

Hopefully we don't live to regret this, but we will need to take our chances at Everton... They're a quality, quality side

Exactly.

If not Jose then who else do we blame?

He choose to go into this season with just one top striker, we have been speaking about it for months.

He has nowhere to hide if we are to rely on a 36 year old to lead our line...that's a worse situation than last season with Eto'o for goodness sake.

If true this Costa injury is a hindrance of course, but we have enough quality elsewhere to make up for it. Besides it's not even the end of the window yet, Torres has been strongly linked with Milan and we will obviously be replacing him if he goes.

SSN don't have the story yet, this could as easily be mind games of some sort

Hope so.

Can't see several sources making it up though

They all take froom each other, slow news day, and it all stems from the sun. I'm not saying its not true. I'm just holding hope it might not be.

Even if its not true we can't hope to go the whole season on tenderhooks like this. We absolutely need another goal threat.

Lets not forget that it was only a few weeks ago that the sun newspaper reported that Drogba was out for months due to injury. Guess what, he was on the bench for the first game.

Nibs is it Mourinho's fault Torres is still here? Do you think it's Mourinho's fault that Lukaku would except nothing less than being our first choice, starting centre-forward and wasn't prepared to stay and fight for his place?

The answer is "no" on both those counts and I don't see how anyone can see it otherwise.

The decision to let Ba go as his third choice striker is the only one I would lay at his door but from the paper reports Ba wanted to leave to get regular football and Jose had Drogba lined up as a replacement.

Unfortunately my friend FFP and the number of foreign players rule are facts we have to comply with.

You are wrong to blame Mourinho here. Jose absolutely has brought the Torres situation to a head. But he is not the person who has the power to get Torres out of the club, nor is it in his interests to come out and say what he obviously thinks about Torres, i.e. he's crap and I desperately want to get rid of him so that I can bring in a quality replacement.

What he does have the power to do, and thank God the cohones to do, is the opposite to what he has been saying to the media and leave Torres out of his team and completely marginalised. I take it you have heard of the phrase "actions speak louder than words" ? Well, Jose's actions here prove his true opinion of Torres but, as uncomfortable as he makes the situation for both Torres and Abramovich, it is still not in his power to get him out of the club only Roman and Nando can make that happen but Mourinho is doing a bloody fine job at trying to force their hand.

The Lukaku outcome is another factor to consider in our striker predicament and also one that cannot be blamed on the manager. Jose told Lukaku he wanted him to return and be part of his squad but that wasn't enough for the boy. He wanted to be the first choice, starting centre-forward which, quite rightly, Jose could not guarantee him and so he chose to leave. If only Torres would do the same!

you say "actions speak louder than words" and insinuate that jose should exercise his power and put his foot down, yet by the same token you say that he was right to pander to lukaku's desire to move on? that doesn't make sense at all i'm afraid... sorry but that is a total contradiction. Why not put his foot down with lukaku like united did with rooney and then who knows, by xmas lukaku could have been getting adequate game time, rotated in champions league / capital one cup / FA cup / League fixtures and then next thing you know he's signed a contract extension

Mourinho is our tangible figurehead of the club. he is the manager, and managers ultimately live and die by their decisions. The player quota, by your very same logic, could easily be circumvented by mourinho putting his foot down in that regard and omitting players from the registration process and fully marginalise them that way, thereby holding the requisite number of players in his squad whilst squeezing out the dead wood.

too many contradictions in what you are saying - be firm in some instances but pander in others. nonsense.

IMO you need to stop and think through what you are posting. What more can Jose do in regards to Torres, other than leave him out of the team? If you think Mourinho has the power to simply say "oh, I want to replace him but no-one wants to buy him and so we are not going to register him as a player this season", you are competely deluded. Do you really believe Abramovich would rubber-stamp that?

As for Lukaku you point out the Rooney scenario as an example and suggest he was forced to stay at United against his wishes. That might have been the actual case or not, I neither know nor care, but I would say historical evidence indicates that there aren't many players, (if any), who have been forced against their will to remain at a club and it has all worked rosy. More likely they become a disruption and distraction which affects the squad and makes the problem worse.

I didn't suggest specific players be omitted from registration so no, I'm not completely deluded mate. We are going round in circles here, let's agree to disagree and accept that we both think the other is full of sh*te. Simply cannot be bothered today.

Without mentioning specific players you wrote this:

The original point I made still stands - Mourinho does not have the power or remit to do that.

I think its too early to have this debate, come Tuesday we will know the score. Personally i think we are in for an interesting few days.

I firmly refuse to belive the club are going to get caught with their pants down striker wise for a second Summer running. Last years over long and naive chase of Rooney pretty much ended up us costing the title. So much depends on the Torres situation really. Currently i think it speaks volumes Bamford hasnt gone anywhere yet. I just dont think the club are going to be so short sighted again.

Or are they ...

This makes the Torres situation crucial also, he needs to leave immediately so we can bring in another forward. Remy is going on the cheap we could snatch him and Destro would be less than 20 million.

Come Come... i would expect more from a long in the tooth fan like your self (no offence)

The club  that sacked Gullit during the most successful spell in many of our living memory

The club that sacked Jose, the most succesfull manager we ever had and argubaly one of the best in the world

The club that sacked Robbie for no reason

The club that loaned Yossi Benhayun to gooners (not saying he was good enough for us but we replaced him with merales) Arsenal came higher then us that season

The club that Pretty much handed Danial Sturidge to liverpool

Crespo?

I'm the first to say that our transfer dealings have got much much better since the days we were f**king up the Robinio deals but I still don't believe we are governed by any kind of logic

I just dont think the club are going to be so short sighted again.

Or are they ...

I don't know bjd, ask your avatar. It seems to have the VISION.

Bamford will go on loan to Middlesborough, we don't trust our yoof after all.
