Steven Gerrard Myth Summed Up

Featured Replies

Im not a massive fan of Gerrard for a number of reasons but that article is a horrific hatchet job, some of it very personal indeed that absolutely crosses the line between balanced sports opinion and bitter bile. Honestly, some people take sport far too seriously.

Clearly i will be in the minority over this but if something like that had been written about one of our boys we would be up in arms!  What the hell is Sunday World anyway ?!

Fair points and I don't think you'll be in the minority, a lot of people will probably think it's nothing but a low level attack... which in fairness... is what it is. Perhaps the way it's been said is unnecessary but a lot of the professional content, for me is, spot on. The personal digs (being threatened if he left etc) are arguably uncalled for especially as he has children. If he had left them out and just focused on the flaws in his game it would have been more appropriate… but there is a reason this guy doesn’t work for Sky Sports or 442.

You could then argue who really cares... There are more important things in life... but personally I'm fed up with this 'one club man' talk and whilst I don't read the papers for the journalist's opinion I do watch Sky Sports, MOTD, read interviews with players, the odd online article etc... which'll no doubt include a comment from the interviewer about the said player. With Gerrard there will always be a narrative about a ‘one club man’... when he did his best to leave in 2005. Same can be said for John Terry. I believe he wanted to move to Man City in... 2009? But then he signed a new deal and the incident has been looked over by most people (fans, pundits etc) ever since. Look at Rooney too; 3 times he’s done it! But then he’s obviously never been classed like the other two.

And yes, if I were to read an article about Ashley Cole… or John Terry... I’d think it was ridiculous, but I’m used to reading negative, personal opinions about them all the time so it’s nothing new. Gerrard on the other hand has seemingly only ever been praised and his faults, on the pitch, completely overlooked. If any other player (from Saurez to Barton) had punched a DJ for no apparent reason then it would have been at the top of the page. Of course I realise this is personal and not professional but it just reaffirms this seemingly absurd underlining rule that you’re not to criticise him for anything.

My opinion/feelings of course, I’m not one of those who think the media are against us but I noted in another thread that a poster (can’t remember who, I’ll find it) said it seems like they are because they’re so pro-Liverpool... IMO, they are... but it doesn’t wind me up, I’m more interested in what they do on the pitch and if they hate us well then that’s their problem, no one likes success.

As for the paper well... couldn’t tell you.

Thats a fair reply Gem.

Like I said im not a huge fan of Gerrard, either as a player or a person. I think my main gripe is how he seemed to get away with murder for his England performances whilst Frank took the brunt of criticism (and lets face it, abuse)  But there is a difference between constructive criticism of a player and downright spite and that article errs on the latter, and i think you agree from what you said really - you put your points across well.

Personally i am beginning to tire of the Liverpool/Gerrard/RAWK stuff that seems to dominate page after page of the forum these days, i think its starting to get a little obsessive and unhealthy.

I guess i should tell myself what i tell others on one of the tedious 'the media hate Chelsea' threads that pop up every week - just dont read/watch/listen! The thing is, its so hard, the Liverpool stuff is everywhere on and i think it doesn't really reflect that well on the site as a whole,  which as we all know is so often full of healthy and educated discussion like no other Chelsea forum has.

It is quite a spiteful article but I must admit I enjoyed reading it...Mainly as a counterpoint to the over the top, gushing that has seemed to be everywhere in the media, re: Gerrard.

This probably has a lot to do with Liverpool coming so close to the title this season, and while its not Gerrards fault that the press have been so OTT, I found it hard not to enjoy him getting a bit of stick for his grandstanding, motivational speech after the City game, especially when he later came so unstuck at Demba Ba's hands (feet).

Ok, I can see there are a few points that need addressing here.

Firstly, about the "Livepool stuff" on the forum. It's not everywhere, but with Liverpool coming so close to winning the Premiership, and with the assumption from so many that they were going to win the Premiership, there's a huge amount of relief that they didn't.

This in itelf goes a long way to explaining the increase in Liverpool related content.

Secondly, there's just so much material to take the piss out of. From the crestfallen former Liverpool players in the media to the premature 2013-2014 Champions shirts, banners etc, to the hilariously over the top reactions to Liverpool's latest failure, this stuff is just out there.

I never visit RAWK, and to be honest I'd prefer it if there weren't quite so many links and refernces to what looks like a complete cess-pool of a site, a parody of the very worst traits of Liverpool fandom. But having said that,  I have to admit that some of the stuff I've seen from RAWK is truly hilarious.

There are also several comparatively sensible Liverpool supporters currently on this forum, which is also going to lead to an increase of Liverpool-related posts. Not to mention the occasional Scouse wind-ups, the ones that inevitably get banned after spoutng the same old drivel. My guess would be that there is far more of a problem with fans of Liverpool than of any other club, as there was on CFCnet - this is something I know for a fact.

As for the article, compared so some of the vitriol I've seen written about JT in particular, the tone was very mild, a fact-based opinion piece if you like, that serves as a nice counterpoint to the endless adulation heaped on Saint Stevie by the majority of the media.

Fair play Tommy, like Gems reply i think youve written that well and i can see your side of things there.

I know due to the recent Liverpool title challenge (and subsequent failure) that references may be increased, however the Liverpool stuff has been going on here for years, and yes some of it is funny and cringeworthy but there has to be limit, for some people now it really is an obsession. I wonder if Liverpool having their own little mini area on the forum may help (like Rangers have), at least that way i can stay out of it and not get sucked in!

One thing I cant agree is that  'the tone was very mild, a fact-based opinion piece '. I think its a lot more savage than that and parts of it were a little unnecessary. Clubhappy has said that its an Irish paper, which leads me to believe it has been written by a bitter Man Utd fan. Luckily if its the same publication Adlridge writes for we wont get to see much of it over here!

Anyway, best to move on now im sure neither of us want to get drawn into a discussion about the merits of an article about Steven f**king Gerrard! At least lets healthily debate something worthwhile ...

Good discussion, and if I may weigh in a little I'm probably on the side of BJD here.  I think the piece is very personal in it's attacks, whereas the points could and should have been made in a more fact based manner.  If you're going to claim that players are better, maybe provide some facts.  I do believe Toure was much better than Gerrard.

The fact remains that the Liverpool fans that read this will again feel justified that there is a media bias against them!  This has always confused me based on the number of ex Liverpool players that there are in the meida, and the whole "the neutrals want them to win, for Stevie and the 96" stuff that was going on...I mean, a journo actually asked Jose "should they win it due to it being the anniversary of Hillsborough?!"  That's shocking.

Anyway, the recent Liverpool fans (Mr Pink and Lewy) have been great.  The RAWK-ites get banned, thankfully.  But I fear the obsession of Liverpool among some members is starting to look a little RaAWK-ish from us.

Scott

I found this article hilarious but I agree it probably oversteps the mark and is filled with Anti-Gerrard/Liverpool bias

BUT we have enough pro Liverpool/Gerrard and anti Jose/Chelsea/JT/Ashley Cole every day in the sun and Daily Mail so this is a welcome change

The inevitable over-the-top riposte to all the gushing, syrupy hagiography that's been written about Gerrard in recent weeks.

One thing the author didn't pick up on was how Gerrard responded to the slip that let in Ba. Rather than putting it behind him, he completely lost his head in the second half and spent most of it taking wild pot shots from 30 yards.

I look forward to Liverpool fading back into obscurity next season so that we don't have to hear about them all the time anymore.

I remember reading one report that actually praised him for his response, like it was a good thing that he went all Roy of the rovers and hung his midfield and defence out to dry. Its quite telling that it is now known that he slipped, poor steeveee. No mention of the terrible mis-control that led to his slip, its been whitewashed out if history.

Its absolutely a hatchet job, but it also been blended with a lot of home truths.

The Sunday world is an absolute rag by the way, its like a poor quality version of The Sun, hard to imagine I know.

I figured that about The Sunday World. Never heard of it before but a quick glance at the comments is all it took.

I agree about it being a hatchet job, there are some good points but also a lot of unnecessary hyperbole that I could do without. In that respect I don't think this article is any better than any of the numerous articles praising Gerrard to the heavens.
