Players that we could have signed earlier

Featured Replies

Which players do you think we could have signed earlier, here is my list:

Petit (age 30):

From what I remember, he was past his prime when we signed him.

Ballack (age 29):

Ballack was a very good player for us, though it took him a while to settle, but imagine the player that he could have been for us, if we'd signed him a few years earlier.

Shevchenko (age 29):

I think he was past his best when we signed him and he never lived up to his potential.

Belletti (age 30):

A solid player for us, but we could have signed him a couple of seasons earlier.

Anelka (age 29):

He was awesome in the 2008/09 season, though it wasn't a great season for us, we did win the FA Cup however. Anelka was decent in the double winning season and even in the season after that, scoring 15 goals and then 16 goals, but he never found the form that made him the best striker in 2008/09.

Deco (age 30):

Deco could have been a very good player for us, if we hadn't signed him when he was past his prime.

Eto'o (age 32):

Again, imagine how good Eto'o could have been for us, if we'd signed him a few years earlier.

He was on loan wasn't he? But still, if we had signed him earlier then that would have been a brilliant signing.

Yup signed him January of 2000 and he ended the season with 5 goals in 15 appearances.

Had he arrived at the club 12 to 18 months earlier we would probably have won the 1998/99 league title.

Hmm this is an interesting one.

I guess you have to think of circumstances like we could sign Ballack earlier because Bayern probably wouldn't have sold him and we got him on a free. But for the fun of it, other than those mentioned:

Mark Hughes: he was good for us anyway but think had we got him a year or two earlier.

Shevchenko: I think it's clear that we signed him to late he was 29 and coming off the back of a knee op. Had we got him years earlier I think we'd have seen the best of him.

Torres: again I have no doubts had we got him a few years earlier he'd have been a hit here. What we signed in 2011 was a Torres that was used goods.

Eto'o (age 32):

Again, imagine how good Eto'o could have been for us, if we'd signed him a few years earlier.

Still think if he'd been a couple of years younger, we'd have won the league last season.

We were looking at buying Torres in 2003 I believe. Would've been great to see him develop his here.

I was just going to say that, that would be money well spent, even for 50. I'm pretty sure we could have signed Aguereo, Tervez if we tried to, instead we got the likes of De Santos. I'm sure we will do better in the future.

Anelka, definitely. I think for both parties. Chelsea arguably gave him his best years and who knows what he may have achieved under the influence of strong leaders such as Drogba and Lampard as well as coaches like Hiddink and Mourinho.
