been from the north ..I had some right stick  after becoming Chelsea in the early seventies ...my late teen yrs  were taken up by following the blues all over the country ...a couple of away grounds that stay in my memory  were elland road ,,,when we took 8 thousand in 1972....filled the scratching shed and a few hundred got into the kop.....great atmosphere....also derby on the opening day of the season ..it went mental after ossie had a goal disallowed in the last minute ...in the bleak yrs after the sexton team split up and we were skint ..we still had a massive away following ...happy days

Some really memorable turn outs for me personally.

Sunderland away semi-final league cup ... Incredible/huge, huge turnout!

Leeds away ... the 1-1 draw ... almost 40% CFC inside the ground!

Cambridge away ... 1-0 win ... 70% complete ground take over. 100s couldn't get in.

Brighton away ... amazing turnout ... whole town CFC!

Luton away 3-3 draw ... considering most games were snowed off that weekend we still totally dominated the gate and home end scattered!

Sheffield Wednesday away 4-4 draw ... at such short notice for the replay date, on a weekday night we still took thousands upon thousands up there. Their hardcore seat area next to us was scattered.

Cardiff away 3-3 draw ... home game, full stop.

Pompey away ... surely one of the v. best away turnouts they have ever seen, if not the best? Seats dismantled at the end. Stopped by Ken Bates!

etc.

Man City ... full members cup final Wembley ... 5-4 win ... full stadium, almost 3/4 CFC ... outside, Chelsea dominated.

......and i was certainly running round wembley with my willy hanging out

20k at highbury 84, 11k at pompey 84 (div 2), 12k at city 89 (div 2), 8k city (div 2, Friday night and live on tv) a quick three that spring to mind, I could go on. "where were you when you were sh*t" ha ha

I always say we never played you because we were not that sh*t.......

Bringing back memories now.

Leeds away 1-1 was great, cop tried to take my car keys off me on way in, as I "might throw them at someone and cause injury". Yeah right, and leave my new (at the time) xr2 in Leeds forever. Recall the Chelsea fans signing "one Yorkshire ripper" which for some reason really wound the northern lads up! Driving back was passed by Ken in his Roller, he tooted as he sped past us on the M1, as we has scarves out the window

Cambridge away. Stopped and asked cop where the ground was. He replied "United or City?". Think that was the game some chaps were on the roof and playing with the TV cameras?

Brighton away. Town was packed, took forever to get in the ground, one of my mates had a plod horse step on his foot. Broke a few toes, but he only went to hospital the next day as couldn't get his trainer off that night.

Great days, doubt you'd get away with some of the things that went on now

My first ever Chelsea game was an away. Wimbledon at Plough Lane in what must have been 87/88 season.

Qued up in the hot sun to get in the no roof away end with the big fence at the back.

We managed a 2-2 draw after being 0-2 and here is my point, I swear the whole ground erupted when we scored, I was gobsmacked, we must have had 15,000 in a crowd of 20,000 lol.

Unfortunately we went down that season but I was hooked ::ChELSeAFaN::

Just remembered another funny memory, Southampton at the Dell in the 90/91 season (I think).

Two things that popped in my head, apart from being in another open away end, a football hit a copper and knocked his hat off and he looked like Jimmy Greaves and everybody starting singing "one Jimmy Greaves". Also at the end of the game, while we were being held in for maybe half  an hour, some guy stood up on one of the crash barriers and sang "London Girls" to what must have been at least 3000 Chelsea fans. Very funny and very brave from the guy  ::clap2::

My mate was ejected from that game and then he tried to climb back in. It was also his first Chelsea game which annoyed his Man Utd supporting father. He still supports Chelsea now and you cannot talk football with his father without the sarcasm of "you took my son away from my team" comments.

Am new to this site, but am loving the old memories.

I remember a QPR away game midweek in I think 1980 in the old 2nd Div. I was 13 years old, it was my first away game, told my mum I was nipping out to meet a mate and watch TV !

We obviously packed out the away end, but before kick off weren't quite sure how many other Chels were in the ground. In those days the teams ran out individually, home team first. As the QPR team ran out, what seemed like the the whole ground erupted with "who the f*****g hell are you ?"  When Chelsea ran out we could see that their whole home end was basically Chelsea. As a Chelsea mad kid at their first away game I loved it !

Great to read.

As a Chelsea supporter ss a kid on Scotland. Believe it or not there was a bit of respect because I was not seen ad supporting am English team that won lots of trophies.

The fact that Chelsea had a 'team with a hard reputation ' did me no harm either!

Some great away support when I started going late 70s into the 80s. The one thing that amazed me was without social media and mobiles why 83/84 became such a good season for away support bearing in mind we nearly went down the year before. I was at the final for champ lge, our finals in Cardiff and Wembley and of course the premier titles. But I can't help it, 83/84 is still up there for me as one of my best years supporting Chelsea. I wonder if I'm in the minority of the people going around that time?

Same here Rich, the season I've got most fond memories of.

The full members cup win 1986,fa cup win 1997 and euro cup 2012 were fantastic ocassions, but 83/84 was first real season going to watch chelsea, so as a season goes it still is my favourite, funny really as Chelsea fans we seemed to have more credibility back then, than we do now, always makes me laugh when oppo fans in their 20/30's sing "where were you when you were sh*t", because you can bet the oppo old skool 40/50 yr olds are thinking,Chelsea were here there every f**kin where!

Fully agreed. Probably still my favorite Chelsea team too. Wish they had won a major trophy but they never quite fulfilled their potential. A familiar story for us back then. I wonder what might have been had Johnny Neal's health not forced him to retire.

yeah John hollins ass mgr Ernie whalley seem to upset the squad. Led to Spackman and speedie being dropped they came back but were the first to leave.

Leicester away in 89 was a huge turn out(same day as Hillsborough) I was 11 at the time but still remember how poor the officials were that day and all the off field activities.

Remember being outside afterwards and could hear fighting, smashing glass and police sirens in the distance as the old bill tried to stop more Chelsea getting up this road. I stood on the window seal of some typical northern terraced house to get a better look of the trouble before looking through the window and among all this madness there was some old dear sat in her living room simply doing her knitting and totally oblivious of what was going on outside!

I was there that day we turned up just after kick off we were in the stand on the left hand side about 20 of us the rest were in the right hand side at half time it kick off between us and some of there crew we ended up getting escorted to the stand the rest of our boys were in that when the rumors started coming in about hillsborough l feel old now I was 28 at the time

My other memory of that day was seeing a group of Chelsea walking down the road after the match and one bloke proudly showing off a Leicestershire constabulary police badge that he had obtained....amazing what you remember as a kid but i was hooked after that match

There is , for some of us , a strange magic of what we see......For a quiet introvert boy of 12 as i was, seeing the stuff in the park lane ( and prior down the high rd), around 67/68, brought out a madness for all things OLD SHED in my years up to now at 60.. I may not remember everything accurately over these years, but my soul holds onto and yearns for the 60s to late 80s experiences...I will still find the ability 75% of the time to allow the young man to pop out on the reasonably boring matches at the Bridge v spuds and make a noise on the Blues behalf on the occasions im lucky enough to aquire a ticket at the lane. There is a good feeling travelling from Liverpool st to Bruce grove, cops awaiting us when we get off...walking down to the ground with some nervousness, and generally arriving at the lane having only been administered verbals from spuds.....
