How to end this season ?

Featured Replies

How is it childish exactly? All I see at the moment is a league that hasnt completed, no team is in a mathematical position to claim anything, Champion, promotion or relegation. The rule cant be made just to suit one team, it has to be consistent all the way down the leagues. If they make Liverpool champion then they have to complete everyones season, meaning teams go down and up. Now that simply cant be allowed to happen as theres teams in unnatural positions due to having played more/less than others. Theres not a single position thats actually completed in any league.

How do you play a football match and maintain a 2-metre safe spacing distance?

It won't always be 2 metres for the duration of however long this is, infact In some work places they've already reduced the distance to 1m between colleagues (have a friend who works in Morrisons).

Mass gatherings will be a no no, but at the risk of sounding like I'm at the 5 o clock meeting closer contact with a small group of people will come into play once the science projections allow it. For example training with the Bundesliga teams quickly went from groups of 2 to groups of 5.

Whenever football does come back (personally I think it's not going to happen this calendar year) then there's going to be a massive reconstruction of the leagues because I just can't see there being 92 clubs left some are going to go out of business. Same as cricket and rugby clubs and some racecourses some of who only have a few meetings a season and rely on corporate meetings and hiring of halls for wedding receptions etc.

Not sure about this but I think Oxford United get more money from hiring the facilities to outside parties then they do in gate receipts.

Agree, I can't see football coming back this calendar year and even with matches being played behind closed doors. Yes, there will be a massive reconstruction of the leagues. Goodness knows how many clubs will go out of business. Can see a couple of PL teams going out of business. I wonder if there could be mergers and ground sharing. I can't remember when two or more clubs merged. Will need to check the history books.

Football clubs and other sports will have to look at other ways to gain money. Corporate events is one way but with money being tight will there be many of those. Even before the corona virus outbreak large businesses were cutting their budgets for corporate events.

Due to the corona virus there will be businesses which will unfortunately fail. I'm sure we all know of businesses which won't recover. But with football it does beg the question, have clubs become so dependent on monies from broadcasters and using that to pay high salaries and large transfers that they don't have reserves? Could mean lower wages and reduced transfers. As we know from the housing market, prices go up and down. Football may have to go the same.

Morrisons clearly know more than the scientists? The 6ft is still very much in place and according to the Chief Medical Officer last night will likely remain for the next 12 months.

Ground sharing possibly mergers I would doubt I remember Maxwell wanted to merge Oxford and Reading some years ago there were massive protests. Also didn't Marler Estates float the idea of merging Chelsea, QPR and Fulham.

Good point about mergers. The protests from fans would be massive. I would hate to see Chelsea would merge with another. Yes, Marler Estates did float the idea of a merger. A frightening thought.

Ground sharing would probably reduce costs. It would be interesting to know how much a club pays in council rates. I guess the rates Chelsea pays to Hammersmith and Fulham.

Bristol City and Bristol Rugby Union ground share and that seems to work okay.

Clubs in League One and League Two have written to the English Football League asking for salary caps to be introduced next season.

The letter was sent on behalf of 37 of the 47 teams by Mansfield Town chairman John Radford.

It follows a meeting on Monday of senior club officials in the third and fourth tiers to discuss salary caps.

There are big doubts the 2019-20 season will finish because of the number of players out of contract on 30 June.

In the letter, Radford says that, ideally, clubs want to end the campaign no later than 31 July.

Clubs believe their players will still be available at that stage because of an additional severance payment that is written into their contracts and paid if they have not been able to find another club.

However, of greater concern is the huge costs that will be incurred next season given the increasing likelihood that matches will need to be played behind closed doors until the end of the year.

"The clubs are committed to wage caps for the 2020-21 season and beyond," wrote Radford in his letter. "This recognises that revenue in 2020-21 is likely to be reduced by as much as 50%.

"The clubs want to urgently look with the EFL into creative ways of setting the wage cap, which guarantees the long-term future for all EFL clubs.

"This is not a list of demands but is the desired direction of travel from the clubs."

It is anticipated further discussions will take place over the issues, although it could be another two or three weeks before any greater clarity is achieved.

However, the EFL, which declined to comment when approached by BBC Sport, is in a tricky position.

It has so far aligned itself closely with the Premier League, which is committed to ending the season if it is practical.

The letter makes no mention of how complex issues such as promotion and relegation would be decided.

Yes the Oxford/ Reading merger was going to lead to a new club called if I can remember right, 'The Thames Valley Royals', I presume if we had merged with Fulham and QPR, we'd of been called CHELSEA, no better name is there.

It will be interesting to see what the SPFL does. Can see a few legal actions in Scotland. I'm biased but I hope Rangers take legal advice on this.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52396490

Uefa has paved the way for the unfinished Scottish Premiership season to be called by outlining reasons for ending leagues including "insurmountable economic problems" or a ban on sports events.

The SPFL board can curtail the top flight after its resolution to end the lower leagues was passed by clubs.

If they were to do so, it would crown Celtic champions and relegate Hearts.

Uefa warned on Tuesday leagues should only be cancelled in "special cases".

And after an executing committee meeting on Thursday, European football's governing body has clarified its stance.

Uefa still urged associations to use their "best efforts" and explore all possible options, including a different format, to complete domestic competitions before the Champions League and Europa League resume, which they hope will be August.

But in a statement, European football's governing body added two sets of circumstances in which it would be acceptable to end a season prematurely, including:

  • Existence of an official order prohibiting sports events so that the domestic competitions cannot be completed before a date that would make it possible to complete the current season in good time before the next season to start.
  • Insurmountable economic problems which make finishing the season impossible because it would put at risk the long-term financial stability of the domestic competition and/or clubs.

With at least eight games left to play Celtic are 13 points clear of Rangers in the Premiership, while Hearts are four points behind Hamilton Academical at the bottom.

It is now up to the SPFL to demonstrate either of the two criteria has been met should they move to stop the current campaign now.

The league has said it is committed to consulting with top flight clubs before making a final decision, with Aberdeen one of those to ask that options to finish the campaign are examined.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said on Thursday that "big gatherings and events" are off for "some months to come" and had previously cast doubt on playing matches behind closed doors.

Uefa added that if a league were to be ended early, then domestic organisers- in Scotland's case, the SPFL - will select teams to compete in next season's European competitions based on sporting merit and "on objective, transparent and non-discriminatory principles".

Uefa says it reserves the right to refuse nations' submissions if they do not meet that criteria.

To be honest the title of this thread should be changed to 'How and when will next season begin' because it looks like events which involve social gatherings will be stopped further for several months. Just can't see football games being allowed to have fans in the stadium until we reach at least December. Forget how to end this season, think more about how we accommodate next season and how the game is actually going to survive without any people attending.

He didn't say that though did he? He said (paraphrasing) restrictions to some degree will remain in place, which we all knew anyway and has been said in different ways loads of times already.

People picked up on his wording and turned into something it wasn't, some are even interpreting his words to mean we will be in lockdown at the current level for the next year, which is clearly not the case.

or others are saying that companies are deliberately disobeying the rules?

I actually find it frightening that we at present have the equivalent of two Jumbo Jets falling from the sky per day here and it is even talked about removing our only weapon against the virus, social distancing. I would suggest that @Argo mate is the victim of an overzealous manager who still doesn't get that this is more serious than anything we have encountered in our lifetime and not Morrison's general policy.

Let the Domino effect begin!!

Indeed. Will be interesting to see which countries follow the Dutch. If one or more of the leagues in England, Spain, Italy and Germany scrap their seasons and under pressure from their Governments that would really put the cat amongst the pigeons.
