June 7, 20206 yr Falling down the youtube rabbit-hole tonight and came across this video. Thought others might enjoy the schadenfreude nostalgia. This game is literally the epitome of why these/those tottenham players will never win anything. Gobby, undisciplined bottlers. I don't remember seeing before that Clattenburg admitted to letting them get away with what they did! Anyone else seen that before?
June 8, 20206 yr Yeah I think he admitted that after he decided to go to Saudi Arabia. Very satisfying comeback. Costas buildup was amazing but the first time finish was just a peach. One touch in the top corner. That's the Hazard we miss.

He did, but it was in the spirit of, "I'm going to let you dig your own grave".... I remember the spirt of what he said was "I'm not going to let you idiots blame me for your imploding, go ahead and implode" So, getting away with it, might not be quite the right way to put it, that implies he was giving them an advantage. On the contrary, he could see them circling down the drain, and he let them...
June 9, 20206 yr Love watching this back. Literally hilarious. They ended up 3rd in a 2 horse race as well haha

On the contrary, he could see them circling down the drain, and he let them... I'm sorry that is just rubbish....his mentality was, I don't want to get blamed for costing Spurs the title (he literally said exactly that in the interview), so I'm going to not do my job of officiating if a legitmiate call might cost them the game by losing a man or giving away a penalty. He didn't care about Spurs digging their own grave. He just wanted to shirk any part of his job that might hurt Tottenham's chances of winning so he couldn't be blamed for it. In what world is letting a team keep 11 players on the pitch when they should be down to 9 or 10 "letting them dig their own grave"? Nah, he let them try to kick Chelsea players off the park....... He gave them a massive advantage by keeping them at full strength when they should have had players red carded......I'm sorry, but I just can't fathom your logic ... it's like saying Overbo was really favoring Barcelona over Chelsea, he was just letting Barcelona dig their own grave but not giving any of the penalties they committed. Really? How is it hurting them to let them play recklessly/dangerously if the referee isn't going to penalize them for reckless/dangerous play?

I said that Clattenburg admitted he didn't want to be blamed. I said that in my first post. We're not debating whether Spurs would have been hurt more with their players being sent off. We're not even debating whether Clattenburg was right or wrong in his actions. We're debating intent. Diego Costa is considered a wind-up merchant. Even if he doesn't get a player thrown out of the game, his goal is to throw a player off his game by losing their focus. The Spurs were completely wound up, lost their focus, and bottled a 2-0 lead. And Clattenburg let it happen. I watched the interview, saw the context, and his tone, and that was my take. Immediately after the match, however, Chelsea skipper John Terry said: “It boiled over, let’s not start getting silly and banning people. It’s a London derby and the fans want to see it.” I don't agree with how Clattenburg handled the situation, and there should have been reds given out. but at no point in that interview did I get the impression he was pro-spurs... My take was that he could see it coming and he thought basically said "you're bottling this, and I'm not going to give you the satisfaction of blaming me for it, because this is all on you". On your Spurs/Barcelona comparison... well, just saying Spurs/Barcelona comparison should be enough to know the outcome here... lol... but Barcelona was tactical. Barcelona was sinister, and they were rewarded for it. Spurs, they're not Barcelona, and they had simply come unglued. Spurs had lost the plot. They were imploding. You know... Spursy ? June 10, 20206 yr This will be massively unpopular opinion but I will say this because we are such a huge club we shouldn't be in a position where we win a rival in a bad tempered match to make someone else win the title. Granted that season was a total failure and fans got something positive in the end of it.If you watch Terry and Hazard interview after the game John does a very bad job of saying we won a rival because we were hurt from the bad season. His actual opinion would have been along the lines of: we just wanted to win f**king dirty rivals Tottenham because we especially didn't want them to win because we couldn't win it. He just didn't want to seem like a bad loser. The dirtyness of the game became from the idea they f**king hate us and we f**king hate them. If you want to vent your frustrations via football, fine. Is it gracious or being a good loser. Absolutely not.I felt good after the draw no doubt and I don't mind the heat in a game but glorifying a dirty game of a bad season is just a bit meh. Maybe I've become too old...
June 10, 20206 yr Was at that game, was very enjoyable. Well.. it was after we started coming back from 0-2 down.

I agree, and my take on that one... we make fun of Arsenal for celebrating the goal that earned them a draw against us this year... I feel a bit the same as we puff up Hazard's equalizer in the battle of the bridge. How many times have you seen the official chelsea accounts post that goal? it was an amazing goal, and it certainly was a nice comeback... but it was a draw... at home... I enjoyed it, but I don't feel the need to celebrate it as a major accomplishment. Chelsea is bigger than that.
June 11, 20206 yr I wonder how the world would have seen Mark C., when the Spuds would have won the match with goals from a player, that should have been sent off after half an hour. A ref should not think about his role in a football match - but it`s his first task not to let a match become viciuos. Mark C. is the worst ref by far on earth and he acted like a dedicated Spuds fan, not as a ref of the EPL. Is he a Spuds fan? I don´t know but I don´t care. Edited June 11, 20206 yr by nominator

I don´t know but I don´t care. Not to comment on this day in particular but I feel AI will grow in football in future years significantly. Goal line technology and VAR are a gateway to systems that can analyse individual situations and actually everything going on the pitch. Football is such a huge business it will enter the field at some point. To think of the resistance it will receive... [emoji16]

I don't think the world would have paid much attention. Leicester was going to win the title, this just clinched a little sooner, which is the only reason this game got world attention. Refs are human, prone to mistakes, and I agree with you, how he handled that game was a mistake.
June 11, 20206 yr TBH, I think more AI in football would be an issue. We´ll see, what the future will bring us. Behind the curtain Mark C. will have had a lot of wind of resistance and I was happy to see, that Leicester made it and the Spuds ended 3rd in a 2 horse race.

But it wasnt a mistake, it was an actual premeditated decision by him to influence the outcome, by not influencing the outcome. Basically he didnt do his job, he should have been fired for that.

I said it was a mistake. If I made a wrong decision, i would say "I'm sorry, I made a mistake" He made a decision, and it was the wrong one.
