i've gone for bridge

he was probably the best of a bad bunch in the 1st half, and did real well in the 2nd he got forward a lot more and looked like he was trying

On the grounds that I need to pick someone ( I am somewhat obliged given that I created the poll!) I voted for Bridge however I have to say that choosing a MOTM was akin to picking the most favourable STD to catch.

Not a good night what with the result and the injuries...

who is in charge of motivation nowadays

lets hope they perform better against Villa

Bridge tried hard but really that was a poor performance, maybe the boys underrated the opposition a bit although they did defend quite well.

Weelll...

Cech - I guess the only person we can't fault here. He did what he needed to do when threatened.

Bosingwa - Some shocking defending, had to be covered for repeatedly. He put in some awful long balls as well. Completely ineffective.

Terry/ Alex - Alex was reasonably strong in places, and kept the ball in front of the half-way line for much of the game. Terry less good, but both made to look foolish at times by their attack.

Bridge - Tried extremely hard, and some good work going forward in the second half, but ultimately toiled to nothing, especially in the first half.

Mikel - Reasonable in the first half, but completely ineffective in the second half when he was scared of tackling their players as they just dived left, right and centre.

Ballack - The crowd summed him up. Not impressed by his rant at the ref either.

Lampard - Stifled creatively and resorted to rubbish long shots which were going nowhere. Sadly, he was probably our best midfielder...

Kalou - Same as Lampard, but with some creative bursts. Messed up a few chances Drogba gave him.

Malouda - Much better than the player we saw last season, but suffered in the same way as Kalou.

Drogba - I have an awful feeling the player we saw last season is gone for good now after a good six months of solid injury (after his ligaments went during the game...)

----

Belletti - No idea where he was playing exactly, but showed flashes of brilliance in a large load of crap. Covered for Bosingwa a few times, but he's really no winger...

Anelka - The less said the better. I saw him put in a couple of good passes, but for those two good passes there have been a myriad of pathetic ones.

Di Santo - What did we expect? Not given enough time and with Anelka as a supplier...

I'm quite serious about that referee - to call him incompentent flatters the twat. I've seen games where a dive or two gets by, but can't remember a game when so many blatant dives - and I do mean blatant, ended up with free kicks, or even a booking. Not that this excuses the inadequacy of our performance, but surely a Champions League game deserves a competent referee?

Malouda - Much better than the player we saw last season, but suffered in the same way as Kalou.

you must have been watching a totaly different game to me last night. he was shockingly bad last night. every time he reieved the ball we lost either the impetus of the attack or the ball. i can only remember one half decent cross all game, the rest of the time he was garbge. surprised to see people picking bridge too. i thought he was very poor, out of position a hell of a lot and rarely threatened going forward. i think only lampard came out of that game with anything. we started poorly and got worse. i hope im wrong but i think they underestimated cluj and paid the price.

the most favourable STD to catch.

Isn't that what we suffered from last night "sive morbus Gallicus"

Gotta be Bridgey, followed by Kalou.

Kalou missed a decentish chance, but Jesus this kid has got lightning quick feet & he produced some good stuff, if Felipe sticks with Kalou & gives him plenty of starts, I for one will be very happy. I know sometimes it may look scrappy, but he needs a decent run in the starting line ups, and he will improve.

Bridgey had a busy game, especially towards the end when he really pushed on.

I voted Malouda basically out of shock that he seemed to give a stuff for once. I thought his link play with Bridge was ambitious but worthy and at a couple of points, he looked genuinely dangerous.

One player who won't be getting my vote is Mikel. Can anyone tell me what the point of this guy is and how come he was at the heart of the world's biggest transfer controversy? Perhaps the most average player to wear the blue since Joka.

i think your way out there mate. look at the games weve played this season. the ones weve been comfortable and played well in mikel has played and had an influence in (other than last night). the ones hes missed weve struggled and been poor. mikel brings a lot of control to our game, he gives the attackers and full backs the opportunity to go forward knowing he will cover behind. he keeps the ball moving, keep sout tempo and breaks up the oppositions attacks. so yeah, other than that what did the romans do for us......

At this moment in time Mike I think Mikel is the most on form and important member of our squad! Average he is not , though to be fair he was pretty crap last night.

Along with 13 others.

Couldnt bring myself to vote. A few people have gone for Bridge but i dont see it myself, i thought he looked lost. With the more attacking policy of our fullbacks he is a clear second to Cashley now. He would still get my vote in a more defensive system mind you. JT had another uncomfortable 90 mins (i seem to be typing this quite a lot this season) Malouda is just awful. People are saying he is getting better, but there was only one way up when you were playing as utterly sh*te as he was. Great he beat a man (once) and put a decent cross in (once). Lets sign him up for another 5 years.

Anelka scares me, he really does This man is going to be leading our front line for the next few months by the look of it.. The commitment and desire Di Santo showed in that header 5 seconds after he came on mustve made Anelka embarrassed.

I cant bring myself to go on. Yes, Cluj are better than we thought. Yes they made it hard for us. But it shoudlve been a simple 3 points for us last night. We never once looked remotely like scoring. I have this horrible feeling that worse is to come.

But he must be good. Old Red Nose wanted him.

Couldn't agree with you more Mike but I still voted for him for Mikel of Match.

Blimey, I'd love to see some stats on his completed passes from last night because I seemed to be repeating the same mantra of 'and he's given the ball away again' throughout the match. Add to that his predictably rubbish shots on goal from 50 yards, his penchant for picking up yellow cards (albeit not last night) and his suspect temper, and we've got a real star.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the 'Maka' role, but I actually think - aside from Essien - Belletti and Ferreira would be ahead of Mikel in my books to take it on.

I would prefer to see Ballack in that position myself.

Maybe I'm just used to him being disgracefully bad, so even a really poor performance looks good?

maybe, he wasnt garbage, he was just really sh*t. ill go with that...maybe that was his plan all along. start of really badly, then it cant get any worse. :D

Think there should have been a 'none of the above' to vote for. Poorest performance for a long time. To me no player came out with any credit. Mikel last night was part of the problem with his slow recycling of the ball and all too often square or back (is Butch having a coaching influence already?).His position dictates the tempo of our play, last night we had none. Ballack has been off the pace in every match since Pompey at home and his passing has been poor. Anelka has stated that he prefers to play alongside a striker but we persist in playing him wide or as a lone striker....his confidence is shot ...note a certain little winger turning it on in Manchester who similarly lost his confidence at the Bridge now that he has left us. The best that came out of this is we gained a point in what is looking like a poor group and we cant play any worse...I hope!
