John Terry Retires from International Football

Featured Replies

Its on SSN now, will try get a link up when possible. What does everyone make of this?

Former England captain John Terry has announced his retirement from international football after playing 78 times over nine years for his country.

Terry, 31, says the decision is in response to the Football Association's disciplinary charge over alleged comments to Anton Ferdinand.

The Chelsea defender was cleared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in July of racially abusing Ferdinand.

He said his FA personal hearing on Monday makes his position "untenable".

"I feel the FA, in pursuing charges against me where I have already been cleared in a court of law, have made my position with the national team untenable," he said

Fantastic news, he has nothing left to prove at an international level, and his efforts aren't appreciated by the public in any case.

Good timing from a career longevity point of view as well.

Bold, assertive decision. Could be pre-empting a nasty ruling from the FA though, time will tell on that front.

Probably knows he is going to get a ban tomorrow and he won't give the FA the satisfaction of barring him from the England team.....the team will be a wreck without him in defence, maybe Ashley should also announce his retirement also as a protest against the Ferdinand brothers....

As above, England doesn't deserve him. From a Chelsea perspective it's a relief that he'll no longer be unavailable due to national squad duties or out of action for the club owing to injury caused while playing for England.

By the way, my heart sank for a moment as I read the first three words of the OP - "John Terry Retires... "!

Don't think the FA will be happy over his comments about them. Maybe they'll punish him even more now.

Oh well, I fully understand why he retires and I hope this will benefit his career at Chelsea.

And I also hope that the England defence completely falls apart now. Not Cole though. He'll be great as usual.

Don't think you should quit your country (I've berated Scholes & Carjacker for doing the same) but like many have said - they (well, we, I am English) don't deserve him. I'm glad he's now fully focused on the club where the fans appreciate him and love him. Chelaea forever. Love his statement, straight to the point. We love you John.

Wish he'd have done it about two years ago, just need Frank to retire now. FA is a joke, its obvious they're gonna find him guilty, how can he be found not guilty in a court of law but the FA find him guilty? bloody stupid.

Good. Good for us and good for him. The irony is that England is a country packed to the rafters with racists that honestly believe they're not. It laughable that English people actually pretend not to be at the very least politically incorrect.

Hopeful Ash will follow suit. They had little or no chance of failing with the rest of the squad in 2014 any way.

Judge: Not guilty for racial abuse

FA: We're gonna charge you for racial abuse

Pretty much boils down to that doesn't it?

A ban was inevitable. The FA have proven they will undermine Capello and even a Court of Law to get to JT so what chance did Hodgson ever have? If I were him I'd resign, he's had the rug pulled from under his feet and lost without doubt his best and most experienced defender.

Possible wouldn't make the World Cup anyway will he is starting to show the fatigue of putting his body on the line for club and country.

I have been thinking it for sometime I hope he uses the time to start his coaching badges.

Thanks JT you are a England and Chelsea legend !

No surprise really , the F.A and England fans have never backed or shown any support for him so why should he bother anymore. England are in real trouble now especially if we are continue with Lescott and Jagielka in defense, they were unbelievable poor against Ukraine, they could barely move, it's like they were playing with weights around their ankles.

Just seen this on the Sky Sport's website via Twitter, in the article is states this:

'The delegation, led by George Carter-Stephenson QC - who successfully defended Terry in court - are said to be ready to argue that his acquittal in a criminal trial means the FA case cannot proceed. That would involved citing FA rule 6.8, which governs disciplinary hearings and states that the results of relevant civil or criminal proceedings are "presumed to be correct and the facts presumed to be true" by FA commissions.'

That's pretty strong isn't it?! To get the case thrown out?! I mean are you freakin' kidding me or have I totally missed something?! If, by their own frickin' rules, it states that what the court have found out is considered true then why the hell are they starting proceedings?! Because of a public backlash? To be seen as competent (too late)? Or is it just one great big huge witch hunt against him? Someone with legal knowledge please explain how they can start action of a 'crime' he has been found not guilty of!!!!!!!! (multiple exclamations needed)

EDIT: Poxy font screwed up C&P'ing the quote

I agree with most here that it's a result for the club in the longer term. He's going to get a fairly long rest due to an unjust ban, aand when he comes back he'll be able to concentrate on Chelsea only.. Result for us. BUT..

Spare a thought for JT, he loves playing for his country, he's been there through thick and thin, stripped of the captaincy not once but TWICE,, takes dogs abuse from the majority of England fans when he plays, yet still he wanted to play.

This must have really torn him up to make this heart wrenching decision, one of the best England captains, i feel for you mate. .

John Terry

UEFA club defender of the year in 2005, 2008 and 2009

PFA Player's player of the year in 2005

Included in the FIFPro world XI for four consecutive seasons, from 2005 to 2008

Named in the all-star squad for the 2006 FIFA world cup

Can see why the FA has done this witch-hunt now... he's obviously a sh*t player.
