So a player who is 29 signs up on a top wage until he is 34. This is a player that should be in his prime, but has been in and out of the team for 2-3 years.

Completely agree with this.

If Belletti breaks his leg (touch wood) I would much rather Paolo had a few reserve games under his belt, than no football at all.

It seems like the reserve team is really just a youth team at the moment.  I think having a few fringe first-team players in the reserves (the likes of Sidwell, Pizzaro, Ben Haim etc) would be a good thing for the development of the youngsters as well as keeping them match fit.
