January 15, 20188 yr Last night I watched Whisky Galore (the 1949 version). I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it. A superb film and one of my favourites. Very funny. Some wonderful moments in the film including the scene when the landlord of the pub tells one of his customers that there is no whisky. The thought of no whisky sends shivers down my spine. One day I'll get round to watching the remake to try and compare the two. A couple of scenes from the film including the one about there is no whisky. Edited January 15, 20188 yr by Boyne
January 15, 20188 yr I watched The Polka King on Netflix because I was bored out my mind! The main highlight was the fact it featured several ‘zigger zaggers’!
January 22, 20188 yr I watched a film called Jungle last night. Based on a true story starring Daniel Radcliffe about a group of back packers who decide to trek through the Bolivian jungle. I thought it was really good myself, one of the few films I’ve watched lately that actually holds my attention.
January 22, 20188 yr Had some spare time recently to watch a fair few films.. Thor Ragnarok 6/10 The Commuter 7.5/10 Wind River 7.5/10 Gattaca 9/10 Hacksaw Ridge 9/10 Fury 8.5/10
January 25, 20188 yr Took the kids to see the greatest showman .... I really liked the stage version with Brian Connolly btw couldn't see it mentioned in this tread ?? Anyway, not my cup of tea at all, far too high school musical for me. However it is an amazing story, it is an amazing piece of cinematography and some wonderful songs if you like that sort of thing. My kids were mezmorised ! (Spelling) and won’t stop listening to the sound track since and can’t wait for the DVD. For that reason alone would say 9/10..... if you not got kids 6/10 (wait till it’s out of the cinema but do watch it)
January 29, 20188 yr I saw "The Great Wall" with Matthew Damon and a bunch of Chinese actors/actresses that I don't know yesterday on HBO. Not sure what to make of it. Perhaps too much CGI. Not the worst movie in the world, but strange nonetheless.
January 30, 20188 yr Watched the new Bladerunner film, loved it. I was worried it would be a modernised version of the original, but it held true to the atmosphere and themes really well.

January 30, 20188 yr Logan Lucky 6.5/10 - Daniel Craig carries this film, he's a hoot. It's quite slow in places and the plot isn't up to much. Not really worth Soderbergh coming out of retirement for this

Is that the story of a Whiskey ship cap-sizing off the coast of Scotland and the locals carrying off boxes of whiskey in WWII?

The film was based on a book written by Compton Mackenzie. Mackenzie wrote the book in 1947 and appears in the film. He based the book on an incident in 1941 when the SS Politician ran aground on the Island of Eriskay. In the film and book the ship is called SS Cabinet Minister. I think that every so often bottles from the SS Politician are found and have been sold for a fair bit of money.

The locals had a great windfall and made the most of it. Though the British authorities got most upset and penalised the Islanders because of lost tax revenue. The authorities came across as vindictive in the program.
February 1, 20188 yr Watched Eye in the Sky last week starring Helen Mirren and the late Alan Rickman. Thought it was really good full of suspense, moral dilemmas and the political buck passing that probably occurs when decisions about killing people remotely using drones have to be made. And the acting was top draw.

Didn’t book tickets as it’s been out for donkeys but at 15:30 on Saturday it was sold out!
February 4, 20188 yr Went to see the current film about Winston Churchill last night. Darkest Hour. Enjoyed it. Have not seen the newer version of Whisky Galore. The original is brilliant.
February 6, 20188 yr The Greatest Showman... haha Really great movie. Cute story. Great soundtrack, if you're into that.
February 7, 20188 yr I watch a weird one on Amazon Sunday, Mindhorn. Co-Written and stars Julian Barratt of Mighty Boosh fame so you can guess what it’s like!
February 13, 20188 yr Just been to see Black Panther, very good indeed if you’re a fan of the marvel films.
February 15, 20188 yr Saw Shaun of the Dead again, a very silly movie that I can watch over and over.
February 18, 20188 yr The Florida Project - Took a while to get used to the unusual style (mostly first-time actors and children with natural/unscripted dialogue) but once I got used to that it was very engrossing. The story revolves around a destitute mother and her young daughter living in a slum motel on the outskirts of Disney World in Florida. A very unusual film that will not be for everybody, but highly recommended if you're open to watching something different.
February 18, 20188 yr Get Out. Its unnerving as hell and a difficult watch but utterly brilliant and original. A sense of foreboding throughout and a knockout performance from Brit Daniel Kaluuya. 8/10
February 21, 20188 yr Black Panther A lot of hype about this one in the press. Mainly because it's almost an entirely black cast and has a black director (shades of Wonder Woman here- strong female lead and female director- hyped up by the press as a result, even if it's not as good as it could be). I enjoyed Ryan Coogler's Creed , and I also enjoyed Black Panther. It's nice to see a film not set in the USA for once. The action is intense and the soundtrack banging. The CGI is very ropey in some places but it's a solid Marvel film. Predictable in a lot of respects, and heavily influenced by James Bond and Skyfall, in particular. But worth seeing, if you're a Marvel fan- it will set you up for Avengers: Infinity War nicely. 7/10

April 6, 20188 yr I watched the Shape of Water last week by Pedro Almodovar (spelling?). Interesting and good characters, disliked a part of the sexual element thought it cold have been left to the imagination. Reminded me of a claimed true story I had read about the Russian Lake Baikal. My rating 6.5/10
