February 14, 20206 yr Parasite is really good. I'm surprised it won the Oscar over 1917 since it's so dark and violent, but I'm glad it did.
February 22, 20206 yr Just watched Man on Fire with Denzil Washington on Channel Dave on Freesat. Must be about the 4th time I've watched it and still get a lump in my throat and a sensation like my eyes are about to water at the ending.
February 22, 20206 yr just watched Joker. I must admit I was a bit disappointed because I grew up a Batman fan & I expected a bit more fantasy/comic. This movie is very dark if you had a good mood, it will be wiped away. Still all in all, a very good movie.
February 23, 20206 yr Just watched the Wanderers for the 1st time since i first watched it via VHS yonks and yonks back ,got to be best film ever in my book as the music throu out the film is mind blowing for me . may i suggest that you look up the film Threads which i think you only find on you tube ,this British made film will leave you scared for life if you was around in the cold war era for sure ,and if not it will still worry you to death .

February 24, 20206 yr Monos - It's a slightly surreal film about a bunch of child soldiers somewhere in Central America who have to guard an American prisoner and a milk cow, for some reason. There appears to be some kind of war going on but it's never explained. The first half takes place on top of a remote mountain top, and then they're forced into the jungle and kind of lose their minds. It looks and sounds very impressive although I found the pacing a bit weird, the film would sometimes just skip forward and miss important events completely. Overall I'd say it's a film that I respected more than one I enjoyed. Edited February 24, 20206 yr by bluedave
March 12, 20206 yr I read the other day that the Elephant Man is to be re-released to mark the 40th anniversary of its first showing in 1980. It's a few years since I watched it so will take my self along to the cinema to watch it. I remember it being a very powerful and moving film. I think that it being shot in black and white adds to the atmosphere.
March 16, 20206 yr Watched The Cruel Sea yesterday. A great film with a brilliant cast. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched the film. For me The Cruel Sea and Das Boot brilliantly convey the stresses, fears and brutality of Naval warfare in WW2.
March 28, 20206 yr Just signed myself up for mubi.com, they're offering subscriptions for £1 per month for the next three months on account of Corona. It's a bit different from other streaming services because they hand-pick a smaller amount of films that expire after a period of time, which actually makes it a lot easier to decide what to watch. If you like independent cinema then I'd highly recommend it.
March 29, 20206 yr Watched Carry on Sergeant this afternoon. Made in 1958, it was the first of the Carry On films. A good number of the cast had served in the armed forces so were used to the training, drills etc.
April 13, 20206 yr Watching Where Eagles Dare at the moment. A great film and I've lost count of the number of times I've seen it. Great book as well. I read all of Alistair Maclean's books in my younger days. Wonderful action stories.

Clint Eastwood must have killed half of the Wermacht. One of the guys I used to work with had "Broadsword Calling Danny Boy" as the ringtone on his phone. I've watched Guns of Navarone a few times. A great film with a fine cast. The sequel Force 10 from Navarone was okay but not a patch on the Guns From Navarone. Both very good books.
April 28, 20206 yr A classic film - and one of my all time favourites on Film 4 this afternoon. It is The Ladykillers. Made in 1955 and a cast including Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom. Katie Johnson is brilliant as Mrs. Wilberforce. Recommended if you've never seen it.
April 28, 20206 yr I watched a film called Bacurau the other day and thought it was brilliant. It kind of felt like a Brazilian take on Seven Samurai.
May 2, 20206 yr On ITV4 at 4pm today is one of my all time favourite WW2 films: The Battle of Britain. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched it. Just to watch and hear those wonderful Hurricanes and Spitfires. Makes up for not being able to get to airshows at the moment. And later on BBC2 at 11.30pm is the programme Spitfire Women. About the women who worked with the ATA in WW2. It's been on TV but worth watching again. @erskblue A couple of programmes I think you'll enjoy.

Made in 1950 and is about Odette Sansom who served with the French Section of the Special Operations Executive (SOE) during WW2. A great cast including Anna Neagle, Trevor Howard, Peter Ustinov and Marius Goring. The French SOE was headed by Maurice Buckmaster and he played himself in the film. Oddette was born in France to French parents but moved to Britain after marrying her first husband who was British. After training with the SOE she served in France alongside Peter Churchill and they pretended they were married (after the war, they did marry) and after being betrayed and captured convinced they were related to Winston. Odette was tortured while in prison and ended up in the Ravensbruck concentration camp. She survived the war and was awarded the George Cross and the Legion d'honneur. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043871/ On the subject of the SOE I'm going to a talk about the organisation next week. A fascinating organisation but one that could be too secretive and there were tensions between the SOE and MI6. Another great film, 633 Squadron, on the BBC this afternoon. @erskblueone of your favourite films I believe. Here's the theme tune. A classic. Great film and theme.
May 6, 20206 yr Star Wars Episode IX: Rise of Skywalker Watched this for the first time today on Disney+. Was wary since it got such a bad critical response (from fan-boys anyway). And the result? It was was fine. (no spoilers below). Not as good as Last Jedi and definitely poorer than Force Awakens but by no means terrible. The Quantum of Solace of Star Wars films. It moves at a break-neck pace, hardly stops for breath and throws out the ideas Last Jedi mooted. Some cool fights but plot was a bit w**ky. I’m suffering from Star Wars fatigue though- they need a 5 year break or something before releasing a new one, though I have just read Taiki Watiti or however you spell his name, will be directing one next. Sigh. I‘m dying to see the next entry in my beloved James Bond film series- No Time To Die. I wouldn’t be able to handle it if it got delayed again due to Coronavirus!

Kind Hearts and Coronets with Alec Guinness and Dennis Price is another I never tire of watching.
