BLATTER COULD SCRAP OFFSIDE RULE

Posted 02/03/10 10:25

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has quizzed the sport of hockey on the benefits of scrapping their offside rule, amid talk that football could follow suit.

Offside decisions are often the most debated issues in football, but that could amazingly become a thing of the past if hockey's example is replicated.

The sport abolished the offside rule once and for all in 1998, a move that made for a more exciting and attractive game for spectators.

Now Hockey president Leandro Negre has confirmed he held informal talks with Blatter on how his game went about implementing the radical change.

Negre believes Blatter was keen on learning about how the sport was affected, although he stopped short of providing him with his final opinion.

"He asked me a lot of questions about it and how successful it was, although he never offered an opinion, so it was difficult to judge what football might do.

explained Negre.

"But he did seem very interested in how we had implemented it."

Not sure what to make of that. Would definitely make the game a bit more interesting I guess, and also stop the annoyance of "FFS linesman!" every time they judge it horribly wrong.

That will never happen. The offside rule is a great one. Well let me retract that. The offside rule WAS a great one until the muppets that be decided to screw it up. All that should happen to the offside rule is that it should be taken back to the rule it once was.

i.e. Unless you are lying half dead out on the wing then you are involved in the game and therefore can be flagged offside.

Yeah agreed, your most forward player on the pitch has got to be involved in play, even if hes stood by the corner flag. But they should stick with giving the attacking team the advantage when the attacker is level with the last defensive player.

I watch Hockey as well sometimes and believe me since scrapping the offside rule, the game has become much more exciting for the simple fact that the whole pitch has become the playing field rather than the imaginary line between the last defenders of each side. The game is more spread out means players get more space.

Football would definitely benefit from scrapping the offside rule in my humble opinion.

Firstly, hockey aint football. I think the effects would be different in football.

Secondly, they haven't scrapped the offside rule in hockey. They have only scrapped the red line offside, but not the other one. So the only thing that has been changed is that you can now make a long pass from your goal all the way down to the offensive blueline without being offside, but if the player has gone past the blue line he's still offside.

I think it would be wrong to scrap the offside rule in football.

It would be an unmitigated disaster if they scrapped the offside rule. It is the most brilliant rule of football and completely defines the way the game is played. If you want to see how football would look without offside watch a Gaelic football match. Essentially the pitch would divide into zones and the ball would be hoofed in the general direction of a zone while the players therein would merely scrap for possession.

Come to think of it Ethicalstrategy would be in heaven.

Yeah, I dont think this has a chance of happening. But if it did, and they refused to budge on something as pragmatic as video review, I would laugh.

Scrap it...and stick your money on Kalou for the Golden Boot

if he was stood on the six yard line with no keeper every game he'd struggle to find the back of the net.......... f**k it 100 notes for the golden boot lmao :beg: :D

ive heard Inzaghi will be able to play until he`s in his 50`s if this happens.

ummmm, Hockey still has offsides.....and it would be rather stupid for either sport to lose it.

The rule hockey got rid of was the 2 line pass which Moos has helped explain, and it was a stupid rule that really prohibited offencive transition and thus made the game less interesting.

Get rid of off sides and watch every team sign a peter crouch and play the longball for 90 minutes.....would destroy the beautiful part of our game.

errrrrr, Mr Bridges & Moos, hockey in this instance is a reference to hockey (ie. field hockey) not ice hockey.

Well thats just wrong!

Hockey is Ice Hockey, no exceptions or I'll start calling football soccer! :P

As a kid I played in one of a set of UEFA tournaments that were played in youth football with no offsides, the tournament was brilliant, the games became far more open and there was actually a lot more passing in the games as there was more space available.

I played as GK when I was about 12 in a game of no offside football. The opposition striker was stand next to me for the whole match, good fun sledging and hitting each us when the ref and linesman were not watching us.

Stupid idea, why not just make the goal 5 yards wider and 2 yards higher :P
