Even Johns wife Janet use to travel with them. You couldn't imagine current players mums and wives doing this! Different times. I remember her on the special to Leeds in '83 leading a chorus of "We all hate Leeds and Leeds and Leeds..." as we lined up for our Wagon Wheels, Mars Bars and Panda Pops cola.
April 14, 20179 yr There's a good article on the official site about it being 20 years since we beat Wimbledon at Highbury in the 1997 FA Cup Semi Final. Great goal by Zola. Loved that yellow away strip for some reason. Be grateful if someone posted it.
April 15, 20179 yr Just realised that tomorrow 16th April is the 19th anniversary of our great comeback in the European Cup Winners Cup Semi Final second leg v Vicenza at The Bridge . We were 1-0 down from the first leg. They scored just about the half hour mark, I think. Poyet equalised almost immediately. Then Zola and Mark Hughes who wasn't long on as a sub scored what proved to be the winner. 3-2 on aggregate. I'm shattered just writing this. Some win ! April 16, 20179 yr There is a good piece on the Chelsea v Vicenza match on theinsideleft.com/chelsea-vicenza-revisited/ Footage of that great second leg.

That season was my first in the MHU (I still have the same seat twenty seasons on) and had a great view of the goals by Zola and Hughes. A wonderful header by Zola after a great cross by Vialli. As for Sparky's goal as soon as the ball came forward and he flicked it on I thought that there was only one thing he was going to do and he did.

April 19, 20179 yr Spotted a pair of Golas in that picture. Always associate them Admiral and Bukta with football in the 1970s.

Rubbing them in the mud to make the ball stick and emulating The Cat! Great Times.
April 19, 20179 yr Shoot League Teams always were out in August. Got them and instantly put us top of the table and Spuds' bottom of the table.
April 19, 20179 yr Talking of football in the 1970s. The Panini football sticker album that came out in the January. I'm sure there was a European edition in 1976. Then the British editions. Got,got, got, not got ! Swap.
April 19, 20179 yr Am guessing that this is a match between the first team and the reserves. Can identify Speedie but not the other two. Anyone recognise them? Thanks. Edited April 19, 20179 yr by Boyne

Think the other one is Martin Nolan. Went to the game. It was advertised as Blues vs yellows, a mixture of first team squad and the reserves from the old football combination. I think the Shed and the East Stand were open, good game played after we beat QPR on the Saturday at home. We then beat Derby 5-0 the following week on the amazing journey of Winning the 2nd division championship. One of my favourite seasons ever since coming to the Bridge in 1978.

I have found this picture of the youth team from 1983-84 and judging from the line up it does look like Isaac and Nolan alongside Speedie.
April 20, 20179 yr Did we often have a first team v reserves match before or at the very start of a season? Just wondering. I genuinely don't know. Cheers in advance.
