Me too. The moment Sky took over commentary was immediately sensationalised.

Cue Andy Gray " Just look at that throw in."

A man who loved patting himself on the back so much, he must have arms like a gorilla.

I actually liked the old days of commentary with David Coleman, Barry Davies, Brian Moore, Tony Gubba and others especially European games that were transmitted via phone line. Just sounded so special sitting round the tv with family and friends.

You forgot Hugh Johns mate. "Knowles....left peg....one nil....pick that one out".

Love that Chelsea home shirt. Pretty much my favourite Chelsea kit.

Royal blue. Compare shirt colours of the one Ossies wearing with the one Zola's holding.

For a while our kits were mid blue, which didn't look quite right IMO.

Good to see the present kit is the proper colour and has the classic white stripe on the shorts.

The 83-84 season has been mentioned a lot and rightly so but one thing that hasn't been was how brilliant it was seeing this man running round the pitch before the game waving his fist to the crowd. The ultimate Chelsea cult player in my opinion. I mentioned in a previous post that my mate got his shorts after the Leeds 5-0. One of the very few footballers who had tattoos before it came trendy and you could imagine him getting them done in a flea bitten bedsit.

Iconic picture, the start of the Chelsea winning machine!!  Proper Super stars, put the current lot in their place, no comparison

Couldnt agree anymore. My favourite era as a Chelsea fan. Such a loveable team with so many characters. They played some seriously sexy football.

The Palace goalkeeper, is it Jackson ?. Can't remember now. Didn't Birchenall get sold to Palace ?

Yes, John Jackson and 'The Birch' did go to Palace. I liked him as a player, not the most elegant on the ball but all action and never gave the opposition any peace.

That kit, that team, that support, the 1980's, Pringle jumpers, my teanage years, why can't it always be like that!!!

Nice seeing HARKINS and his mate on bbc4 coupla weeks back.....Showed em walking thru newcastles end I think...I say this becoz there is a single pic somewhere on this site of the same scenario....Go dude go...........Just been having a one to one online with a gooner who says Arsenal were doing the zigga zagga years before us....I put up the Greenaway story for him to read.....

I remember my first trip to old Trafford was on Harkins coach......we alighted quite close to the ground with his voice telling us that if any of us run we ll be walking home..Remember us singing THE  song and many Chelsea going wild.....I was young so probably didn't take all things happening in, but I knew I loved it....Tomoz...2 2

Cheers. I vaguely remember Birchenall, I started going as young kid with my dad in 1970

Being slim enough fit into a medium sized Le Coq Sportif 1983/83 Chelsea home or away top!

The late Peter Jones was a brilliant commentator on Sport on 2. Agree. My favourite bbc tv football commentator was Barry Davies and the late Brian Moore on ITV.

The young mates always look at me funny when I say 83/84 is my favorite seasons

Same here mate. The sheer joy of that season after the very real threat of relegation to the old Division 3 in 1982/83. And it was a very real threat!

I'm bloody ancient! I used to go with the old man when Roy Bentley was banging 'em in and Eric Parsons was scampering down the wing.

I take my hat off to you Sir- just out of interest, what dyou reckon was the biggest gate in games you attended in the 50's, 60's

You must go back to the period before the old West Stand was built in 65 and that side was all terracing.

Edit- just checking online, from 65 onwards our capacity must have been capped at about 62, 000, until the old East Stand was torn down in 73. Our highest gates during that period were against Man Utd every year with the exception of Spurs in 69/70.

I reckon the last 60,000 plus gate would have been Bobby Charlton's farewell in 73
