August 20, 20187 yr I can’t believe it!!! I was 16 at the time, still remember being there early queuing down the hill to get in the clock end. The welcome the team got as the coach came down the street was fantastic. Ive mentioned before on here with so many fans there it was packed by the time the first few arrived on the North bank and a big cheer went up!! So pleased there are pictures and footage of the game because people not there or reading about the game all these years later might think people exaggerating about the numbers. There were more in the ground than The attendance given. It was so packed and was hot as well. This was also the norm the previous couple of seasons I traveled away. The amount of times clubs had their biggest crowd of the season when we visited was a testament to our support.
August 20, 20187 yr Newcastle away. Used to find it funny, because of our numbers on the trains we were always escorted on the road and not the pavement! Also where we had support all over the country the coaches used to get met coming of the motorway. I went by coach to Leeds 83/84. As we came off the motorway we had to wait and we had police outriders escort us to the ground. We had around 40 coaches that day. The police came on board to speak to the driver and was told to ignore red lights and follow the convoy!! as we approached roundabouts the exits were blocked by the old bill to keep the coaches together it was an impressive sight. Shame with the allocation nowadays as these scenes won’t be repeated.

I stood in the North Bank with an Arsenal mate a few years earlier last game of the season when they played Villa, who won the league there- Arsenal also qualified for Europe. No Way was the Clock End as ram jammed that day as us in 84, yet the gate was nigh on capacity. The only other time I stood on the North Bank was the New Years Day game in 85, when West Ham away got froze off, and loads of us ended up watching Arsenal v Spurs. It kind of went off in the clock end which made Chelsea’s presence obvious, but there were loads Chelsea scattered around the ground keeping a low one.

Yeah and on many occasions the crowd ws simply a guess to the nearest 1,000 or even 5,000. I was at Hampden a few times in the late 1970s/early 1980s when they gave out the official attendance over the tannoy I remember my old man simply laughing at the official attendance ! I had a vintage Chelsea shirt on too. 1994 the Makita Tournament at Highbury- we were placed in the new Clock End-it kicked off in one of the executive boxes above, next thing people from the adjoining boxes jumped over these partition rails and joined in. Pretty sure we were playing in that rotten orange and grey away kit. We’d qualified for Europe via the back door virtue of loosing FA Cup finalists to Man U- remember very noisy “ We didn’t win the football league we didn’t win the cup, but we’re all going to Europe”

I was there once with a chap I had just met at Charing Cross at 1-4 down he started shouting and threatening and Arsenal started to come up around us. I thought of moving over to a small rump of CFC pushed to a corner surrounded by police (probably Garrison and his chaps) yet realising we were three down decided to call it a day.
