January 18, 201511 yr Author Two minutes walk from my house when I was a kid. Used to drink in there when I was 16, no ID requested in those days. Then graduated to White Horse (before it was known as Sloney Pony) and Jolly Brewers at Parsons Green, then the Durrell Arms, and ended up in the Lord Palmeston on the New Kings Rd, when the ex Wrestler (zakash I think, was the landlord). Some right lads in there on match days, and away coaches used to drive past as they parked up near the gas works, and pub regularly emptied as everyone popped outside to welcome the visiting fans. I drank in the Mitre a few times in the 90s mate but mainly in the Palmerston when i was running with certain fella's, used to have a quality firm in there late 90s. Though it did come on top for 4 of us v y*ds once, night match they took the utter piss, the Palmerston was empty apart from us 4, 30 y*ds knocking on the window offering us out, like mugs & to save fave we went for it but thankfully plod batoned em up the road, with one copper asking us if we had a death wish. 10.50 that night 9 of us had it with the same 30 outside the Tapas bar, it was only the fact some fat little y*d wanted to make a speech that saved us & helped us prepare for it, if they'd got straight in to us we'd have been f**ked.
January 18, 201511 yr Remember that night well CB- the ones who walked out the CIU club a spanking. Got a theory about the New Kings Rd boozers or thereabouts- the Elizabeth, the Rose( anyone remember the sign they had on the door- customers wanted, apply within?) The Palmeston, the one that became Jim Thomsons, The Adelaide, Nell Gwynn etc. Id say they were largely patronised by South London boys who'd driven over Wandsworth Bridge and parked up round Bagleys/Imperial Rds etc. Wheras the Fulham Broadway and North End Rd watering holes were occupied by people who'd got the tube or come from further north by motor. Talking of the Rose, there was an old Rolls Royce that was parked up opposite by the gasworks club for about 30 years. Might still be there now

Feeling old now, I used to drink in the Palmerston from about 80-85... Mostly young lads in there at the time, but a few dodgy older guys, second hand car dealers and the like who were well up for it. Used to slip in through the beer garden straight after the game when pubs didn't open again until 5:30...
January 18, 201511 yr Used to frequent the Nell Gwynn on a regular basis generally parking my Triumph Herald in the vicinity of Lots Road.
January 18, 201511 yr I dont remember these pubs some of you probably will.. Live & Let Live 1973 The Clarence 1974 The Salisbury Tavern 1974, is this now The Finborough Arms? I remember the Live and Let Live and Clarence they were up the West Ken end of North End Road in the 80s the Live had a firm of Boro drinking in there who worked in London round about the time of the playoffs and ZDS Cup final we had a few tear ups with them
January 20, 201511 yr CB: Love the fact that is so packed in that picture above, apart from that bit with the police !
January 22, 201511 yr No the Salisbury was on Dawes road, it is now a Tesco local or some such cobblers...
February 6, 201511 yr Mate of mine played against Micky Droy when at the very end of his career he turned out for Kingstonian. Apparantly he had bandages on both knees, could hardly run, yet scored two goals from set pieces. He was so big and strong, if the ball was delivered accurately you couldn't stop him at that level. Always reminded me a bit of Bluto from Popeye. Ps Peter Osgood put one on him once according to his book

February 6, 201511 yr I saw him play for Kingstonian at Dulwich Hamlet round about 1990, I think he was their captain and I seem to remember he scored in a 3-0 win for them.

Ps Peter Osgood put one on him once according to his book Shouted alright Micky to him a couple of years ago when he was outside his electrical shop in Kensal Rise. He gave me the thumbs up and even from the other side of the road he looked a massive bloke. I've heard he sold up and has moved to America. We would have definitely got promoted in 1980 if he wasn't injured so much.
February 7, 201511 yr Aerial view of Stamford Bridge with Chelsea playing Sunderland on August 27 1984 and winning the match 1-0. Jezz: Cracking picture above. Cheers mate!
February 10, 201511 yr Our match at Man City in Jan 1979 is on 'The Big Match Revisited' ITV4 from 6am - 7am. It is on this week, not sure of exact day.

February 11, 201511 yr Cheers Boyne. Another match in that 78/79 season on shortly is our home 0-0 draw with Liverpool. This game took place I think in March 1979. Not a bad result since they had a brilliant side that won the Championship with a new points recotd that 1978/79 season.
February 11, 201511 yr It'd be great if the showed say 'The Big Match Revisited' from 1976/77 and say 1977/78. There must be cracking Chelsea match highlights footage around from then. Or going back, the early 1970s.
February 11, 201511 yr Author Good article on London Football http://greatwen.com/2015/02/09/forty-years-of-london-football/

February 12, 201511 yr devil dog: Yeah about 35 years ahead of the current Nike 'orange one'. In those days it was because of the snowy or frosty pitches.
