He was indeed a player mate.

The West Brom team of the late 70s, with him and Laurie Cunningham up front, were some team.

I'll second that. Fillery was in the first Chelsea side I watched as a lad and he always looked a player to me. Was pretty gutted when he left, after Venables convinced him he could become an England international at QPR. Joined Steve Wicks and Gary Chivers there as I recall.

Seems odd to think of that lot being a step up from us at the time!

The FA Cup was played over two legs in 1946 to allow clubs to get some much needed gate money.

A 1-1 draw. Tommy Lawton our scorer on his Chelsea debut,

In fact 9 of our starting 11 were making their Chelsea debut that day.

1.William Robertson, 2.Daniel Winter, 3.Albert Tennant, 4.Bobby Russell, 5.John Harris, 6. Reg Williams, 7. Dicky Spence. 8. Joe Payne 9.Tommy Lawton, 10.Len Goulden, 11. James Bain

  Only Dicky Spence and Joe Payne weren't making their debut !

 

A crowd of 39,678  saw it,

The second leg took place on Thursday, 10th January 1946 at 2pm and we won 2-0.

Was at the Wigan game. Freezing cold and hard pitch. Can’t remember which way round, but a shot which was touched on the line was disallowed for offside involving Pat Nevin and Micky Thomas. We won the replay 5-0!!

We'd five different goal scorers that day.

They were: Charlie Cooke 27th, Tommy Baldwin 43rd, Bobby Tambling 56th, John Boyle 58th and Peter Osgood 68th mins.

Now this was a game.  Sat 7th Jan 1978.   We beat Liverpool 4-2 at The Bridge in the FA Cup 3rd Round.

Our scorers: Walker 16th, Finnieston 50th, Langley 52nd, Walker 65th mins.

Charlie Cooke's last game for us.

In front of a crowd of 45,449.
