Chelsea's David Luiz will carry on touching his team-mates 'for luck'

• David Luiz pictured with his palm on Fernando Torres's head

• Sources say gesture is a lucky ritual, not a prayer

David Luiz will continue to touch his Chelsea team-mates before kick-off despite their amusement at the Brazilian placing his hands on Fernando Torres ahead of the 5-0 win Champions League group win over Genk on Wednesday evening, in which the Spaniard scored twice.

David Luiz was pictured with his palm on Torres's head and his eyes closed, apparently in prayer. But it is understood that David Luiz was not praying – just carrying out a pre-game ritual he believes can bring the team luck, the 24-year-old being described as a "tactile person".

And, while this was not a practice aimed specifically at Torres and his difficult start to his Chelsea career, there is satisfaction within the squad at him now collecting four goals in his past four outings as there is a feeling that the 27-year-old has been unfairly criticised since joining in January.

Sorry about that.

Luiz just becomes better and better. Lets not fool ourselves here, if Luiz had not passed on that good luck there is no way Torres would have scored yesterday! Thank the lord we have David Luiz!

He must be great to have around the dressing room. I do wish he'd stop picking up silly yellow cards though.

Date I say 'part of his charm'?

He certainly is 'mecurial' to say the least. I get the impression he could end up as an icon for us, virtually everything he does is just that little bit different...

Good & Bad... And i love it !!!

Date I say 'part of his charm'?

It is and thankfully it hasn't cost us yet but it's early days and he'll learn. It's great to see someone with such a light hearted attitude and a smile.

Fantastic player and i think something that was needed to help break the habits of the old, something needed to breathe new life into a tired and aging squad, something needed to help get the best out of those around him.

So glad we have him at the club, and so glad we have a player so "out there" that he does stuff like this. I am also glad that we have players that will let him carry out his "antics.". Can you imagine ifnhe had triednthat to Chopper?

I thought the best thing was that Torres seemed to take it half-seriously too.

Agreed, plus he didn't look p*ssed off or irritated that he done it. Some could almost see it as patronising but the fact Nando let him do it and didn't cause a fuss shows he's a class guy.

Yeah I liked that too, seemed to get quite in to it as opposed to looking arkward or embarrassed... it went on for a while too!

Love everything about it to be honest, really do.

OH DAVID LUIZ......

All the time Luiz can keep playing those great through balls which Torres will benefit from, I'm sure Torres will let Luiz do whatever he wants to him!!

But Luiz is a breath of fresh air. The bloke is just so likeable and a real driving force. Every squad needs a David Luiz.

I had really hoped that Luiz would have had more games to be honest. I like many others have thought that he should be given a crack at the DM role, he is a fantastic passer of the ball and likes to get forward which wouldnt matter as much as when he is a defender.

Why does his attacking ability necessitate him being played in midfield? There are many examples of . In midfield Luiz would get a fraction of the time and space he is afforded in defense, where as he demonstrated against Bolton, any team that plays with a lone forward and sits back can't handle the extra man. Luiz and the CBs are the new Makelele; the extra man in midfield used to cause trouble for teams, now we've progressed to a CB playing a similar role.

As Sydney says, having a CB who can supplement the attack is a brilliant weapon to have. Teams rarely have a man designated to pick up an extra man running from as deep as the oppositions defence and that kind of player can cause havoc. Lebouef was brilliant at it, JT isnt too bad either. But Luiz looks something else, not only does he have a great passing game he can actually take players on very comfortably. As long as the Defensive midfielder knows what to expect and fills in for him then there should be no problems if we lose the ball. I say keep him at CB and allow him the freedom to attack if he sees the space.

Why does his attacking ability necessitate him being played in midfield?

Mostly because I don't trust him as a center-half. Whenever he goes in for a tackle, he might win the ball, he might get a yellow, he might concede a penalty. I hope he learns and improves.

Time for him to learn how to defend. I don't care if Alex is leaving, but Luiz needs to learn from watching him & JT play.

Luiz should not be a defender. As someone said in another thread, play him in midfield, but in defense he is too much of a liability. Though I don't think a penalty should have been given against him, the fact that he did that in the box, away from home, is something a smart defender does not do.

I agree and it's not the first time he's done it. He puts himself in positions where he doesn't have to be. Today there was a guy with the ball away from the goal. No need to make contact, just cover him. A similar thing happened in his 2nd or 3rd game I think.

Could be down to lack of experience, but I think it's because he simply makes mistakes. Overwork situations and make bad calls.
