Worst Chelsea performance before the Athletico game?

Featured Replies

1991, I remember that one. Back when we were sh*t, huh...

in reality there are too many to list

we were good and got beat at home 5-2 by Leeds in about 1971 ... just sh*t that day or did we have a dodgy keeper

Absolutely. I remember watching this game with my big brother who was and is a Leeds-fan to this date. Actually, he was the one who made me a Chelsea-supporter. Before the cup final in 1970 he had been a massive cock and I decided to cheer for the other team. My dad was a United-supporter and my little brother decided to cheer for the Spuds, so you could imagine our family dinners... Some proper trivia for the lads right here.

Yesterday's result was bad and the effort was worse, but not anywhere close to our "worst performance ever".

yeah yesterday really brings home just how lucky we have got. Performances like yesterday were expected and the good ones a pleasant surprise though for all the bad results I can't really say i saw a Chelsea side that didnt give its best.

Pretty much sums up my view of it as well.

At the bridge 0-3 against Sunderland. I remember watching David Haye fight Audley something or other in Scumchester and having to get the train early doors to make the game. Obviously I wasn't thrilled with the performance that day.... Seem to remember Paolo playing CB

Liverpool away last year. Worst performance I've ever seen from us.

Yep, that's another.

What about when we lost to Boro a few years back, 3-0 was it? Remember that being pretty poor.

We don't know we're born though, some of the hammerings we took in the 80's.........

there are many worse than them

rotherham 6 chelsea 0

forest 7 chelsea 0

spring to mind

This Madrid defeat wouldnt even make the top 50 in our history. The Rotherham one though, f**ks sake that was difficult to take. They battered us at home that year too didnt they?

In recent years we've had some bad results but I've still always felt that at least the players gave it their all... that is all except for last season. I don't know what it was about AVB's reign, but more often than not the players just seemed not to give a sh*t when they were out there, phoning in performance are performance. I can't remember any specific ones other than West Brom & Liverpool (RDM), but that's because i've tried to erase most of them from memory. I do know that at least 75% of the time I was pissed off with our lack of effort and quality after matches under AVB.

The Chelsea side from that period is still my favourite ever. I was at the 5-2 home defeat against Leeds in 1969/70, our best season of that era - we won the FA Cup and finished third in the league.

You're right about the keeper - Peter Bonetti was injured or ill, and Tommy Hughes took over for the Leeds match. He also played away at Everton, the eventual champions that season - we lost that one 5-2 as well. No wonder Dave Sexton went out and bought John Phillips!

They also beat us 4-1 at home that season. 10-1 on aggregate against Rotherham, yikes! It puts Friday's game in perspective. We're fortunate that tonkings like that are rare these days. Talking more recent horror shows, 5-1 against Spurs in League Cup, losing 3-0 to Middlesbrough under Jose and getting knocked out of the FA Cup by Barnsley when Grant was in charge.

I remember a particularly painful 5-1 tonking from Tottenham in the League Cup in 2000 or 2001. Luckily we made up for it by beating them 4-0 twice in a month...

My fav Chelsea team too, so many characters within that side. It was the period when i fell in love with football properly, good job I didn't start watching a few years later.

Performace wise, lose to WBA, draw against Swanesa, Norwich etc all pretty awful, lucky we didn't face very good teams on the day. Now I calm down a bit, this game didn't bother me too much, We were not great, but we were beaten by a team that has figured us out tactically, and has precisely the type of players that could hurt us.
