Andriy Shevchenko could be handed a role within Chelsea's coaching set-up.

The recently retired Ukrainian has spent considerable time at the club's Cobham training base as he works towards qualifying for his coaching badges.

And owner Roman Abramovich has held talks with the 36-year-old about a role at Stamford Bridge.

The Russian is close to Shevchenko and sanctioned his £31million transfer in 2006.

Shevchenko never came close to his AC Milan form in a Chelsea shirt and left the club on loan to the Italian giants in 2008.

Chelsea have a habit of bringing back former players to play coaching or managerial roles.

Former player Bolo Zenden recently joined the club as an assistant to new manager Rafael Benitez.

Eddie Newton and Benitez's predecessor Roberto Di Matteo were also former Chelsea players before they rejoined in a staff capacity.

Thought you'd seen the end of him eh? Thoughts on his return as a coach?

of course i cant be sure of his coaching qualities without witnessing it first hand, but on paper it seems like a good idea. he is a smart guy, and was an elite striker, one of the best of his generation

As long as he has the required qualifications I thinks it's impossible to have a strong opinion on this. He seems like a decent guy, but as fans we can't really have any idea how competent he is as a coach.

One of the best finishers in his prime. Has experience and is a very decent man. Always been a big fan of Shev even though he didn't have the best time here.

A move to apease the fans, I'm sure their are other coaches who are far more qualified.

Nothing against Sheva, just unsure of what he would bring to the party!

He is doing coaching badges so more than zenden

Its not a big deal if he was given a coaching role. Lots of teams do it. I always likes Sheva, in my eyes he always tried even thought it didnt quite work out for him here as much as we had all hoped.

If he wants to get some coaching time with us then why not. Let him work with the youth. Maybe he could help some of the young strikers with things.

I think being one of the best strikers in the last 20 years should mean he has plenty to bring to the party, but great players dont always make great coaches as we all know. If he can coach though then he could be very useful to us.

I think if this was a ploy to appease the fans, he really does have no idea about what the fans want

can think of many great past players over the past decade i'd rather see come in and do some coaching!

In 5 or 6 years Torres will be another to coach at Chelsea!

If he can't pass on his knowledge about scoring goals, hopefully he can at least teach the young ones how to be a professional footballer. From our former players I'd put him right up there (or thereabouts at least) with Zola as someone who young players should look up to when it comes to being a professional. When those two made the headlines, it was always about football.

I'd welcome him even if he  just does the post match interviews...help me keep my dinner down.

It's a cushy number provided by his good friend Roman so that he gets some experience at a top club before the inevitable step up to management elsewhere. Jumping the queue ahead of many other more qualified coaches and going straight in to a high level job. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

He was a great player in his hayday, but he will also always be Chelsea's second most expensive flop (Torres 1st, Bogarde 3rd). We don't need another has-been telling war stories around the fire. We need good, intelligent, professional, experienced and determined coaches that will get the best from all of the squad.

Sheva coaching Torres is like the blind leading the blind!

Him being a flop has absolutely nothing to do with his capabilities as a coach. Great players don't often make great coaches/managers, but to make assumptions about his possible coaching abilities based on the twilight years of his career is somewhat absurd.
