hadn't seen this was happening before, but thought it may be of interest to people!

Michael Ballack XI vs a World XI playing in Leipzig tonight... with Mr. Jose Mourinho taking the honours of coaching the world XI!

furtherly of interest as this article points out is that andre schurle will be feauturing in the match and his coach rudi voller will be taking charge of the Ballack XI.

ps (dont think match is on british tv but seems to be a link on usagoals.com and presumable elsewhere for anyone who wants to watch.. KO 7pm)

A very nice article on Ballack

Michael Ballack: a nearly man or an undisputed midfield genius?

good read. it is very true and very sad but the talk of how much difference winning trophies makes is spot on. (fernando torres will go down in history while doing f**k all hahah!)

like i find it interesting they mention his leverkeusen side that missed out on all the trophies when that about that time there was a bayern munich team once touted as the best that had ever been that have long since slipped into obscurity since the failed to clinch the final victory they needed. (to teddy sheringham and ole gunner skolskaer in injury time... hate united but f**king funny!)

had bayern lost again this year they would have gone the same way, and robben that of ballack.... instead...

they are the biggest club in the world. 1 man, 1 goal, history. footballs awesome sometimes. even when its not about us! ;)

i hope he has some decent half time entertainment. david hasslehoff singing jump in my car springs to mind given his germaness and certain arrest history...

Always loved Ballack, and was sad knowing how unappreciated he was. I remember many didn't want him starting the games. After he left, everyone realised what he did for the midfield and the team. Glad he got to win the league with us under Ancelotti.

I remember in the Overebo match, feeling absolutely gutting for him as his handball appeal was turned down. Watching him chase the Norweigen was so sad to see, it was the nearly man of our generation realising his last chance of a major prize had been wrongly taken away from him.

He probably also had one of the greatest one man show ever in a world cup in 2002. Germany were dreadful but he was something else and dragged them to the final. His performance in this respect in a world cup can only be beaten by Maradona in 86 and Baggio in 94.

He deserved to win more than he did, but he is one of the greats of his generation and most certainly the best German player of his generation.

Ballack, the worlds greatest runner up.

Not having a go at you FC, but this notion bothers me.

Okay, in 2002 he lost both the CL final and world cup final, but both his teams were massive underdogs. In both of those games they were competitive and would have never gotten there without him.

At Munich he won six major trophies, including three league titles, then came here and added four cups and a league. The CL final was another loss for him, yes, but his career was full of silverware and yet he gets tagged with this reputation of being a loser.

I understand he wasnt the best-liked player in the Germany set up, but the way he was moved out of their NT was kind of a joke, and offering him a few friendly caps just so he would get to 100 and go away dumb. And since he was excluded from the team, its not like Germany have done anything to break the "nearly men" reputation.

edit: After reading the article, I can see that he wasnt exactly blameless in how things went with Germany.

I think it's just that he came so close to winning the biggest prizes at both club and international level on more than one occasion.

Had he triumphed he would have gone down in history as one of the most decorated players ever.

One slip away from a European Cup win with us and robbed of another final due to the worst officiating display most of us have ever seen... He even failed to get to the 100 cap landmark for Germany after a falling out with Joachim Löw left him on 98 caps.

Of course he was a successful player and an outstanding one too but he came so close to being able to pick up the biggest trophies and he had a massive hand in getting his teams to finals/semi-finals only to fall short at the last.

He will forever be remembered as one of the best midfield players of his generation though.

Well, after reading that article it seems that he garnered little sympathy back home for his attitude, but I didnt think he came off as a bad teammate or unlikable while he was here.

No doubt that had he won either final in 2002, or even been able to play in Yokohama, it wouldve been a signature moment for an excellent career, but it also would have represented a massive shock. To me anyway.

But as the article says at the end, maybe time will see his play is remembered better than his honors. Also, I was very impressed by his time as a pundit, and he seems to have an understanding for the game that will lead to coaching one day.
