Different styles but watched the Wigan 8-0 game and forget it was a 10man Wigan, looked at the team and thought maybe this one not as good, then it was 433

Defence was Czech, Ivan, Alex, JT and ash........so think luiz better than Alex

Midfield was ballack holding, with malouda and lamps..........versus Ramirez, lamps and mikel holding......this is very tight, but maybe double team takes it

Forwards was 37 goal Drogs, Anelka and kalou..... Versus hazard, Torres and mata/Oscar/vdb........very close again but maybe double team again

That squad also had essien, deco, belleti and and Paulo

But we have cesar, Cahill, Bertrand, van ginkel, ba, eto, mikel, willian

So guess my conclusion is the double team better now, but this team will be better when it matures in couple seasons

Double team is better. Malouda, Anelka, Lamps, Ivan, Ash and Drogba were great back then.

I'd have to say the double team is better until we get a better striker.

Ws6blue. Mikel played majority of the games in the double winning season. Ballack didn't play as a DM in all 38 games. You just generalized it.

I think it's only the striker that lets this current team down and who knows Eto'o may prove to be a very good signing. As for the defence we are better now and midfield we are better i think.

Double team. More understanding and chemistry. They just played better as an overall team.

This team has more potential, but the double team wins until we see what this team can do.  Drogba was just immense that season and we have no answer for him to this day.

Hard judging a team that has only a few games under its belt against a team that broke records and done the double. If our current team play as good as the double team were in for a treat. Really enjoyed that season. That team just clicked and the likes of jt lamps Ashley Cole and drogba really were at their peak. Our current team is younger and has bags of talent. Just hope Jose let's them express it like Carlo did with the double winning side. Time will tell.

I'll be honest i didnt enjoy the double season that much. There were so many times it looked like Carlo had blown it.

I think if we are honest we should have wrapped it up much sooner. We had no real challengers that season. City were only just starting to bring in players and United were not at the races. We should have walked the league that season but we only really picked up after we were knocked out of the CL by Inter. With only the FA cup and League to play for it gave us a bit less to worry about.

I have said it in the past, i wasnt a fan of Carlo as a manager, he is a lovely guy and great for the image of Chelsea but i really dont think he is at the same level as Jose, Fergie or even someone like Hiddink.

Thats just my opinion though.

But uno nearly blowing it adds to the excitement. It would be boring having the leauge wrapped up by march.

Yes you do have a point but for me i never wanted Carlo as manager. To be fair he won the double and no one can ever take that away from him but i have never really rated him as a top manager. So during that season it was painful for me.

Dont get me wrong i didnt dislike him at all i just didnt think he was as good as people raved about. I like him as a person, he really got involved with the club and was good for our image. After we won the league he went on Chelsea TV for a phone show, no other manager has done that. That gets my respect but i just didnt think he was good enough for our club at the time.

I really wanted Hiddink to stay. I have been a fan of Hiddink for the last 10 years or so. I know that wasnt possible. Im not sure who else i would have wanted at the time to be honest. It was a while ago now.

Yeah I do agree about Hiddink but could he have doing it over a long period guess we'll never know. I really liked them both. Class acts

you can divide up the players pretty evenly, the double team might just come out in front...but in a head-to-head i'd pick any jose team to beat any carlo team 9 times out of 10.

that's what won us the league...beating all the other contenders. the thing is, that was the worst those contenders had been in years and would be until, well, now. 

 

man utd lost ronaldo, arsenal sold half their team to man city and liverpool went into freefall...we beat all those and we still managed to lose 6 times in the league? 

double team.  that team could score goals by the boatload -- they scored 103 goals!  this team can't score like that unless eto'o seriously turns back the clock.  

My attempt at an in-depth breakdown, blue = 1st, red = 2nd:

A dead heat, Petr is still Petr! You could argue that our current team has better depth with Schwarzer replacing Turnbull but that isn't enough to give them an actual edge.

Brana, Ferreira and Belletti (and an injured Bosingwa) versus Brana, Azpilicueta and Kalas.

 

No contest in my view, the experience of the the double team's right backs beats our current crop hands down, even if you throw in Essien as a de-facto fullback. The double season was Brana's best in a Chelsea shirt. Plus, how could one possibly vote against Juliano Belletti?

JT, Ricky C, Alex and Brana versus JT, David Luiz, Cahill and Brana.

 

I'm going to give the advantage to our current team, the JT/Ricky C partnership wasn't at its peak (injury robbed Ricky of a large part of the season) and for all of Alex's strengths I would take Luiz ahead of him every day of the week.

Ashley Cole and Yuriy 'Russian Ronaldinho' Zhirkov versus Ashley Cole and Bertie.

 

Bertie runs hot and cold; on the occasions that he was required to fill in Zhirkov usually did well and was a more accomplished footballer, so the double team gets the nod.

 

DM/CM:DM/CM

Lamps, Ballack, Mikel and Essien versus Lamps, Ramires, Mikel and Van Ginkel.

 

I've given the edge to the double team, I'm not keen on the Frank/Ramires partnership and Van Ginkel is still largely untested. The current team does have more depth with Essien in reserve and Oscar capable of playing deep, but Frank circa 2009 and Ballack trump what we've got at the moment.

 

AM/W:AM/W

Joe Cole, Deco, Malouda and Zhirkov versus Mata, Hazard, Oscar, Willian, Schurrle and De Bruyne.

 

I'm not even going to bother explaining my choice here.

Once again a straightforward decision, Didier banged in 29 goals in the league alone during the double season, our current crop will be lucky to notch up 29 between them.

A world-class CM is also lacking IMO.

Just looking back on the seasons stats to refresh my memory.

 

We only had 2 players in the PFA team of the year that season and the manager of the year went to Redknapp and player of the year went to Rooney despite being outscored by Drogba. 

 

Carlo only won manager of the month once (ironically in the troublesome month of November) and Malouda was the only player to pick up player of the month. 

 

 

Crazy when you think about it. 

 

I miss him so much.
