Favourite Abramovich era victory over Man Utd

Featured Replies

Following on from my Arsenal topic, I decided to do a best Abramovich era victory over Manchester United. Now I know we had plenty pre Roman victories over United, including the wonderful 5-0 demolition that we all remember with love but I don't want the article to be too long. Hopefully I haven't missed any out, Chelsea's record against United is excellent however I really don't want to look up the stats on this one. So go ahead which one of these was your favourite win.

Chelsea 1 Man U 0 2003/04 Premier League

The bridge was bouncing for this game, a win would take us top and it did. Frank Lampard's penalty gave us the win after Roy Keane brought down Joe Cole. It was an early statement that things were changing and that Chelsea were true contenders for the title.

Chelsea 1 Man U 0 2004/05 Premier League

An early statement in our first Premier League title winning season. A superb run from Geremi on the right to play the ball to Drogba who knocked it down for Gudjohnsen to take the win. Again a statement was made and right from the first game of the season. This was also Jose's first league game in charge of Chelsea.

Man Utd 1 Chelsea 2 2004/05 League Cup Semi Final

Man Utd had never lost a domestic semi-final during Sir Alex Ferguson's 18-year old reign (at the time) but Chelsea put an end to that. Chelsea took the lead through Frank Lampard before Ryan Giggs equalised. However Damien Duff struck late to hive Chelsea the win and send them to the final where they won the first trophy of the Abramovich era.

Man Utd 1 Chelsea 3 2004/05 Premier League

Newly crowned Champions Chelsea travelled to Old Trafford and received the guard of honour. Van Nistleroy gave United the lead early on however Tiago equalised with a stunning strike that even stunned Jose Mourinho. Gudjohnsen and Joe Cole scored a goal a piece to ease Chelsea to a 3-1 win.

Chelsea 3 Man Utd 0 2005/06 Premier League

A win for United would give them hope of catching Chelsea, yet a win for the blues would seal the title. Any shred of hope for United was crushed in the opening minutes when William Gallas scored with a header. Joe Cole made it 2 later on with a remarkable piece of skill and Carvalho rounded off the game with a stunning finish. England fans probably remember this game more fir Wayne Rooney broken metatarsal but to Chelsea fans it was a truly glorious day that brought home back to back titles.

Chelsea 1 Man Utd 0 2007 FA Cup Final

Not the greatest of matches but vastly important one. A win for United here and they'd do the Premier League and FA Cup double. A win for Chelsea here gave them a domestic cup double, add to that losing out in the league title also made a win for Chelsea that much more important. Didier Drogba ensured that win happened in added time with what was a great work teamed goal. Chelsea also made history yet again by been not only the team to last win the FA Cup final at Wembley but also the first team to win the trophy at the new Wembley.

Chelsea 2 Man Utd 1 2007/08 Premier League

An emotional game following from the death of Frank Lampard's Mother Pat. Chelsea took the lead through Michael Ballack early on, the celebrations were emotionally charged as the team held up a shirt in memory of Pat Lampard. Wayne Rooney equalised for United and was actually injured in the process. Late on a Michael Carrick handball led to Chelsea getting a penalty, Michael Ballack yet again scored this time from the spot. The win ensured Chelsea would take the title race to the final day.

Chelsea 2 Man Utd 2 (Chelsea win on pens on pens) 2009 Community Shield

Carlo Ancelotti's first chance at silverware came right away in the Community Shield. United started the stringer of the two, taking the lead through a decent Nani strike. Later Carvalho equalised and Frank Lampard struck Chelsea into a 2-1 lead. The game looked over but Wayne Rooney struck late to take the game to pens, although he needn't have bothered Chelsea were much more clinical winning the shootout and the Shield.

Chelsea 1 Man Utd 0 2009/10 Premier League

A massive but disappointing game that saw Chelsea come out winners after a John Terry header. United were the better team on the night but Chelsea the more clinical.

Man Utd 1 Chelsea 2 2009/10 Premier League

This game was billed as the match that would decide the title and it did. Chelsea perfirmed superbly and struck early on with a great piece of play from Malouda and a quick thinking Joe Cole who back-heeled it in for the lead. Didier Drogba made it 2 later although replays showed he was offside. United pulled one back through Macheda again replays showed it shouldn't have been given as Macheda had clearly hand balled it into the net. The wrong scoreline but the correct result gave Chelsea the edge in the title race.

Chelsea 2 Man Utd 1 2011/12 Premier League

In a season that wasn't going well for the blues not many expected them to get a result here but they did. Wayne Rooney gave United the lead after half hour but an inspired David Luiz brought the game level in the second half. A Frank Lampard penalty gave Chelsea the lead and a deserved win over United late on.

Chelsea 5 Man Utd 4 2012/13 League Cup

After been robbed in the league fixture only a few dats prior Chelsea were out for revenge and they got it in a thriller cup tie. Chelsea were the better if the two sides but Ryan Giggs gave United an early lead, David Luiz equalised from the spot but United again took the lead soon after through Hernandez. Cahill equalised shortly after but again United took the lead through Nani. It was frustrating for Chelsea as they had clearly played the better of the two teams but in the last minute of injury time young United defender Wooton brought down Ramires in the box to set up a spot kick which Hazard took beautifully. In extra time Daniel Sturridge and Ramires scored to finally gave Chelsea the lead they deserved. A very late Ryan Giggs penalty was too late to cause any problems and Chelsea progressed to the next round.

Chelsea 1 Man Utd 0 FA Cup 2013

After a stunning comeback from 2-0 down at Old Trafford a replay was needed. It wasn't a classic by any stretch but Chelsea were deserved winners from a cracking Demba Ba goal.

Man Utd 0 Chelsea 1 2012/13 Premier League

Again not a classic but it turned out to be an important 3 pts for Chelsea. Juan Mata earned Chelsea a 1-0 win (although, some sites credit it as a Phil Jones own goal).

Chelsea 3 Man Utd 1 2013/14 Premier League

Man Utd's poor season under new coach David Moyes made this a must win for them. However that was not meant to be as Samuel Eto'o scored a hattrick to give Chelsea an easy won. Hernandez scored a consolation fir the visitors.

My personal favourite as I'm sure it will be for many was the 3-0 win at the Bridge to give us the title. We were superb that day and totally outclassed them.

Although beating them 2-1 under Carlo was quite satisfying. especially as Drogba was offside! quite nice to have the officials give a side the benefit of the doubt when at the time Old Trafford was not very forgiving for most away sides.

Considering macheda's goal was via handball it was justified.

Yes I kept telling that to the United fans who claimed that they had been robbed by Drogba's offside goal. Fair result would have been 1-0 to us anyway. that Joe Cole goal was genius. he scored a few for us vs United!

The image of Carvalho sprinting up into their box and the commentator saying something along the lines of "they all want a goal now" just before he slammed it into the net, priceless.

Can't narrow it down to one. The standouts are winning 3-0 in 2006 to clinch the league. We were good that day. Beating them in the cup final. And the win at OT in 2010 that effectively clinched the title. The fact that Fergie was still clearly anguished by that one years later makes it particularly satisfying!

This one for me too, if only because I queued up all night for tickets and had a chat with Terry Venables after the game on North End Road.

Agreed, the one where Joe Cole done Ferdinand and the other defender (Evra?).

It was emphatic and Joe Cole was a favourite of mine.

I knew a couple of United fans who went on and on about that. I kept reminding them that Macheda hand balled it so it would rightfully have ended 1-0 but they kept making excuses.

when i read the title of the thread, the 3-0 sprung into my mind first. that goal from Joey Cole is ingrained in my memory. shimmying away from 3 players the way he did was pure class. poured more salt in the wounds. wonderful

Man Utd 1 Chelsea 2 2009/10 Premier League

Even though we have had some great wins over them this one is my favourite. It was nail biting and it was the day where we managed to basically take the title back away from them after watching them win it 3 years in a row.

To this day they still moan about Drogba's offside goal, and forge that Macheda's goal was handball. They couldn't accept that they were beated by the better team.

Loved this win.

Agreed they never shut up about that offside goal, they say it cost them the title. We should of had a pen in that game too Neville for a tackle on Anelka i think. But we all know we deserved the league that season, scored the most goals played the best football and did the double over Arsenal Utd and Liverpool.

The 3-0 at the Bridge for me...

But another mention would be the 2-2 draw in the cup there last season. 2-0 down with ease and slowly getting back into it. That second half was amazing. The Hazard goal. The Ramires run. Was in the away end and 5000 of us went barmy when we got the second. Plus Mata nearly won it at the death! Walked away from Old Trafford chanting away feeling as if we'd won tbh.
