So as we know the season is only a few weeks away and our pre season seems to be going very well indeed, with the likes of Zouma in particular excelling.

The question is though, what back 5 will Jose start against Burnely and which will he end up sticking with through the season?

The defence is not particularly tricky only that Jose doesnt bench a fighter like Ivanovic. Luis and Aspi will have to alternate that left back position at the start of the season seeing as Luis just arrived. When luis settles, Aspi and ivan will handle RB (although ivanovic will play CB at times). The only areas where one could be concerned are right wing forward and who partners matic in midfield.

We won't bench luis. It would be pointless buying him if we're just going to play azpi at LB again. It will almost certainly be azpi at RB and luis at LB. Unfortunately Ivanovic and zouma will be benched as cahill and terry are still our best CB pairing.

John Terry is still our best cb. The way he marshal's the back four is second to none. I have to say i'm not totally convinced by Cahill he's solid but he needs a JT type player around him to organise things. The gaps when he played for England between him and Jagielka were alarming

I think We'll start out as last season

But the longer term goal will be for Ivan to move central and suceed Terry with Dave @ RB and Luis @ LB.

 

Whether thats this year or in the future is up for debate, I think the ground work will start this year so Moruinho can see how well Ivan and Cahill work together and whether he feels we may need another CB partnership in the future. The Gk solution is easy, rock paper scissors, the loser is shot / made into glue, or is that Nando?

 

Honestly though if Courtois wants it and is willing to train hard and prove himself (unlike a certain Kraken who shall remain legendless) I can see him being No 1 by March. If not he'll be gone in Jan.

Id be happy with Vermaalen.

 

Very solid, dependanble, can play at LB or CB. be the counter opposite to Brana at RB.

I suppose Ake gives us the same option though and we'll have Christiansen in the squad so it may not be worth our time but unless Ake comes good I do think we are a touch light at the back.. Not a €40 million Verane though!

I have never heard anyone refer to Vermalaen as solid and dependable. He's awful.

Ive always rated him, he got injured a couple of times but he was the Gooners best player a few years ago, But I kind of meant his ilk, LB, CB, prime of his career.

 

I also think that If we did get an Injury to any of Cahill, Luis, Terry, Brana or Dave, none of our established first team players will get a rest. I want to see a youth player coming through and it would be ok but I wouldnt want to be in a position where we had to rely soley on them, fine balance I suppose and if Jose is happy with where we are at then im fine with that.
