R.I.P DICKIE ATTENBROUGH

Featured Replies

Enjoyed hearing him when he was interviewed, always had so much energy and love for Chelsea. R.I.P good sir, enjoy the seat alongside the King of Stamford Bridge.

Media reporting that we may rename the East Stand after Lord A, honorary president for life.

Great actor, who enjoyed a massively full life and was always proud to speak about his love of the club.

A true blue!

A true Chelsea fan, a fantastic actor turned director and a great man to boot.

If anyone has read Brighton Rock and seen Lord Attenborough's portrayal of Pinkie you will know how talented he was.

R.I.P Richard.

This would be good. Matthew Harding stand and Richard Attenborough stand. I like it.

Great man all round, remember standing outside the Blackbull pub when Dickie used to drive in to the turning to park up his blue roller and he he always had had time to say a few words,10 Rillington Place just one of the great films he made but one of my favourites.Yes let's name a stand after him as as that's the least Chelsea can do to honour this great man.

Great actor, great man. To me, he'll always be Pinkie in Brighton Rock. What a performance.

Agree with those who say his dedication to CFC deserves recognition at the club.

I  have to admit that I find it difficult to put aside my image of Richard Attenborough as something of a luvvie, particularly in his later years.Having said that, his love for the club cannot be denied. The following  is an excerpt from an interview in Time Out:

I made sure that my contract stated that the Saturday matinee could not begin before 5:30, which allowed me to drive up to Stamford Bridge from the Chelsea games. I wore no make-up and didn't come on stage for the first 19 minutes. There was no reason for me not to pursue my real love – football.

And there's plenty more in that vein for anyone who cares to look for it.

Didnt know he was a Life President of yours.

Great actor, Bridge to Far and Ice cold in Alex being two of my favourites, along with Jurassic Park which the kids love.

Had a very soft voice that you could listen to all day.

RIP Dickie.

The look of mutual love and respect that he and JT seem to have for each other in the above photos is really quite adorable.

This one is great too:

Reacting quite appropriately to Geoff Hurst's company:

I also found this article which I think encapsulates Sir Richard's love of Chelsea as well as his humour and playfulness:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2321542/Attenborough-the-truest-of-Blues.html

It includes this absolute gem of a quote:

"I went and stood on a bank with a packet of sandwiches with my girlfriend who I eventually married, principally because she agreed to follow Chelsea, and we've been going since 1942."

A truly great man and and a true Blue.

Lord Attenborough made perhaps his most important contribution to Chelsea history.

The club – and freehold for the lucrative land on which it played its football – had changed hands and in the fallout many shares fell into the clutches of property developers whose plans threatened the club’s very existence.

Crucially, Lord Attenborough’s shares did not, which eventually helped the club take back control of the freehold for the future. Chairman Ken Bates thanked him by appointing him Life Vice-President. Typically, Lord A later gently but firmly took advantage of the goodwill he had earned by securing design changes for disabled supporter areas when the stadium was redesigned. Throughout his connection with Chelsea he has remained a benign advocate for the club.

Will be missed! Hope we name the East Stand after him

How it started....

The club also played a significant role in Attenborough's early film career. "After the war I made a film called Brighton Rock, and I was – not fat, I would say, but not skinny. And for the part that I played I needed to be very, very skinny indeed." The producers suggested that he trained with a football club, and Chelsea invited him along. "I went to Stamford Bridge and worked for several weeks with the gang, and became a friend of England's best-ever forward, Tommy Lawton. So I've been part of that club for a long time."
