Ruben Loftus-Cheek

He's the manager and he deals with these players every single day.

I think he is the best judge to decide what he says or doesn't say about said player.

He's the best manager in world football, he has standards and if they are not met then he knows the best way to get them met.

With Jose 100% as always.

I don't understand this attack on RLC, he's a young lad, if you have a problem with him, have a word with him in private. You don't attack him like this in the press. He's basically calling him a fraud and a liar.

Normally he does everything he can to take the attention away from his players but now he openly attack one of them? I don't get it.

The lad did superbly in games that actually mattered when other players put in sh*te performances

None of those games post crystal palace mattered.

What.

In fairness, Jose criticised Eden after the Atletico match and he responded well. Maybe he's hoping RLC responds similarly, but talking about their relationship 'taking a step back' (if that's indeed what he said) is going a bit far. Here's a young man who needs encouragement but also criticism....that type of comment doesn't fit either in my opinion.

They absolutely did because Jose respects the competition. They weren't simply advertising opportunities.

Maybe this is simply Jose going a bit far (which he can do) in criticising someone he knows has talent. He did the same for Eden....maybe he doesn't want to see Ruben become another Mikel.

Make over 200 appearances for Chelsea? Wouldn't want that no.

He said himself if the oppo had anything to play for then he wouldn't play the youth players.

What he said about Eden wasn't half as bad as what he is saying about RLC.

Games like this and the close season tour will define RLC he needs to impress if he is to make the grade here. Young players need to show hunger to get to the next level or they soon fall by the wayside along with a lot of other players who were talented in their youth but never progressed.

Wow, that's a bit of a stretch. Questioning a player's commitment is not unheard of, especially with Jose. Even Hazard finished the match after requesting to be substituted. I think Jose wasn't happy in general. And that's besides the number of occasions Jose lambasted Hazard from the touchline in the final weeks of the season, during matches. He has the right to do that when he feels the players aren't giving enough.

Never fulfil his potential. How many minutes has Mikel played from the start since we signed Matic?

The Liverpool game certainly had something on the line and the West Brom match was competitive. Much moreso than today's exercise in clearing old merchandising.

RLC showed more than enough in the matches he was given at the tail-end of the season. I'm hoping this is simply Jose stopping RLC from getting complacent and getting him to spend the summer in the gym.

Why is it a stretch? It's basically RLC saying he's injured versus Mourinho who said in his interview that he doesn't believe RLC was injured but just isn't committed and doesn't want to work for it. I don't know how you call that, but in my book, that's calling somebody a liar.

Just don't play Ruben out of position his whole career and he'll be fine.

Jose never sticks the boot in to players he wants to leave because that makes no sense. Clearly feels the kid can do much better, and I'd only start worrying for him if he doesn't get a runabout in pre season.

How many managers failed to put him in his 'correct position'? Jose was the first one to realise what his proper position is wasn't he....and that's where he'll sit from now on.

Jose can criticise players, but I think he's gone too far in what he said about the relationship. That stuff you keep between the two of you, if it's true.

That's Mourinho for you, agree with his comments and/or actions or not.

What I will say is that if RLC does want to fight for his Chelsea career this may be the point where he buckles down.

Hopefully this has the desired effect but I think it's one thing to criticise a player's effort and another to comment on the relationship. The truth is that it's incredibly important for these types of players to come through and be part of the squad. Jose knows he's going to be measured on that so maybe he's simply frustrated.

Probably, he must also have a fairly decent understanding of RLC's mind-set, perhaps a personal comment will have more of a positive impact. Also I can imagine Izzy and co will now do everything to stop that sort of comment coming their way.

The actual quote about the relationship taking a step back sounds far worse out of context, in the full thing he praises him when in possession, just wants him to work harder defensively. It won't let me post the entire interview for some reason but its on twitter.

Qoutes from Mourinho:

'(Loftus-Cheek) was saying he had a pain in his back,' Mourinho said. 'But what I was feeling was that he only had this pain when Sydney had the ball.

'When Chelsea had the ball I never saw a pain in his back. When Chelsea had the ball he was playing very, very well.

'But when Sydney had the ball I think he was more impressed by watching Mikel and Matic work, instead of himself.

'With Ruben, it is one step back in my relations with him. If he doesn’t know what it is to play for me and Chelsea, it’s one step back.

'(Loftus-Cheek) has to learn that when you are 19 years old you have to run three times the amount of the other more experienced players.

'You don’t have to play like a superstar with the ball at your feet because this is the not the Under-18s.

'He has to learn it is not the Under-18 competition which is too easy for him. But I don’t accept that a player playing in midfield with Mikel and (Nemanja) Matic doesn’t have intensity and is waiting for other people to recover the ball.

'Why should I accept it in an 18/19-year-old kid? He has to learn what it takes to play for Chelsea.'

Ruben Loftus-Cheek was involved tonight, and the manager had some advice for the midfielder
‘Ruben said he had a pain in his back but what I was feeling was that he only had the pain when Sydney had the ball. When Chelsea had the ball he was playing very well, but when Sydney had the ball I think he was more impressed by watching Matic and Mikel work, instead of him working.

‘So, with Ruben, it’s one step back in terms of my relationship with him. If he doesn’t know what it is to play for me and Chelsea it’s one step back.

‘He has to learn that at 19 you have to run three times more than the others, you have to play to your limits and not play like a superstar with the ball at your feet because this is not Under-18s.

‘The Under-18 competition is too easy for him. He’s too good to play in the Under-18s but I don’t accept that when he’s playing in midfield with Mikel and Matic when we don’t have the ball he doesn’t press, doesn’t have intensity and he’s waiting for everybody else to recover the ball. I don’t accept that in the superstars so how can I accept that in a kid? He has to learn what it takes to play for us.’

You're right, it does sound much less abrasive in context but I think it's got something to do with Jose not speaking in his mother tongue. Sounds much more like a challenge being laid down.

Everyone moan that the young players of today think they've already made it and have it on a plate too early. Sounds like this is Jose giving RLC (and all the supporters & media) a reminder that he still has a long way to go and there is a lot of hard work ahead of him if he is going to make it at Chelsea.

Fair enough IMO.
