Bastian Schweinsteiger to Chelsea?

Featured Replies

Apparently Chelsea are going to battle with Man United for the signing of Bastian Schweinsteiger. He has stated he is in no hurry to renew his contract and it isn't something that bothers him. What do people think? Could he move to Chelsea and would he be a good fit?

Funnily enough I saw a rumour that Thomas Muller was looking to engineer a move away from Bayern to seek a new challenge... Now that's a player I would want!

Can't help thinking there's some Bayern players fishing for an improved contract.

No Way. Wouldn't want him now at his age. Anyway, he can't be relied upon in important penalty shoot-out situations!!

He's one of the best centre midfielders on the planet. Ballack was a similar age when he joined us, Makalele was older

So a player who's in contract talks has said he might leave? call me cynical but it's amazing how often we are mentioned in situations like this. Almost as if it's a tactic....

Not a dig at the thread started by the way, more the players/agents.

So who gets turfed out of our midfield to make way for him?

Can't blame them when it usually works!

They weren't as injury prone as Schweinsteiger and we never had to worry about finances back then. Also, when we signed Makelele we were in a totally different situation. It was the start of Roman Abramovich's era and we were signing players that would help us compete for titles, a player like Makelele was needed.

lol, stop picking on us to get improved contacts. Wish they target someone else for once!

It's got to be a club that could compete in Europe with their current club so when you look to England there's us and eh... Us! I take it as quite a compliment that some of the best players in the world use us as an example, hey if the club stays strong maybe we end up signing them in the end anyway ha!

That was then, this is Now. He just doesn't fit in now - we really don't need him.

My point is that age doesn't always matter. I would argue we do need somebody like him as without Matic or Fabregas we're not great in midfield.

past it

He's been one of the best midfielders in Europe for the past couple of years, not sure how you think he's past it? Don't get me wrong he's not somebody I'd want us to go and spend 40 odd million on but if his contract is near the end he's not going to cost the world. Far better than Mikel/Ramires too.

Edited by 1905.

If he came here he'd be 31 by the turn of the new season, not a good investment considering his injuries and the money it would cost to pay him.

Wages are definitely a factor against but like I said I'd sooner have Schweinsteiger than Mikel or Ramires, and I imagine they're not on peanuts.

Depending on the price then it's an interesting one. First, can we not write off world-class midfielders as past it....it has come back to bite us on the arse fairly recently.

Secondly, he's only 31. What's of bigger concern is his knee injury. If that's manageable though then he could be a great option to come in as cover/rotation for Fabregas or Matic. But his contract doesn't end until 2016 so you're looking at Bayern letting him go for a fair price to us, and then there's his wages.

Maybe Khedira is a better option. Out of contract this summer, younger but then there's injury worries over him too.

Past the point of making sense I meant more than anything. Obviously he would be better than Ramires and Mikel...but this would have been a tasty transfer 3 or 4 years ago.

- He'd be massively expensive to pay

- Massive injury concern

- Not tested in the premier league

- Never going to happen anyway

Can't see it happening personally.

We only hand out 1 year contracts to current over 30's players and I can't see us offering or Schweinsteiger accepting a 12 month deal.

All good points.

Cost-wise though, if you used him as a short-term bridge to the likes of Ake and Loftus-Cheek developing into first-teamers and cashed in on Ramires and Mikel then the cost wouldn't likely be an issue.

But all those concerns you listed are still the case.

If he did arrive and was a positive it could maybe be a little like the Ballack transfer...... by that I mean he plays some significant roles, but we are left saddened that he wasn't here sooner.

I loved Ballack!

As mentioned his injury status could be a major concern as is his age. Depending on how we use him both of these conerns can be minimised but the cost of his wages would probably still be too much to bother with. Don't see much weight behind this story at all.

Also back in 2012, Schweinsteiger himself said:

"I have to admit that I see Mourinho as an excellent coach. Unfortunately he doesn't speak German. Either way, I believe Mourinho is a coach who would definitely be successful with Bayern. I would very much like it if Bayern think of Mourinho if we are ever in the market for a new coach".

I can, and would be happy to help out if he joined.
