Penalties - given vs not given

Featured Replies

It seems to me that, along the lines of what Mourinho has expressed. The number of penalties we have got this season in the league vs ones that we should have obviously had is outrageous.

From what I can tell we have been given the following:

  1. Hazard vs Arsenal (correct decision)
  2. Hazard vs QPR (correct decision)

We have not been given the following that should have been:

  1. Costa vs Burnley away (incorrectly booked for driving)
  2. Cissokho handball vs Villa
  3. Costa vs Liverpool (skrtel foul)
  4. Naismith handball vs everton
  5. Fabregas vs southampton (incorrectly booked for diving)
  6. Terry vs United (Rojo holding at a corner)
  7. Ivanovic vs West Ham (Carroll pulling shirt in the box)
  8. Hazard vs Spurs (tackle from behind by Fazio)
  9. Vertonghen handball vs Spurs (clearly hit his hand on the ground but not 100% penalty to be fair)
  10. handball vs Burnley at home
  11. Costa vs Burnley at home (shove in the box)

I am sure there are other ones I am missing as well, but assuming these are the only ones. That is a 15% correct ratio of giving penalties this year. 15%!!! 1 out of every 6.5 correct penalties have been given. 50% is bad enough but 15%!

Im a newbie here so sorry if I missed any similar threads, I did search and nothing came up.

Am I wrong? Have I missed other obvious penalties we should have had?

Really we shouldn't be relying on penalties to beat burnley. Matic was a total idiot and that's what cost us.

How are we relying on penalties? Burnley can stop us scoring by saving shots with their hands and pushing over strikers when they are through on goal, how else are we supposed to score?

Matic didn't cost us sh*t, if Atkinson refs this game even remotely competently the Matic scenario never even happens.

the standard of refereeing in this country is appalling. This is a global sport, a global brand, look at the amount of money Sky have just pumped in to get the rights to this, and the FA just keep letting matches get ruined by awful officiating. They will do nothing about it. No amount of fan or club pressure will do anything, as we will be accused of being bitter or bad losers. Sky/media will never make a squeak about it because it gives them things to talk about, minutes to fill on the television and columns to fill in the papers, and all disquiet about it from managers is silenced by the threat of fines or bans for having the audacity to suggest that these men in black are not up to the task.

Disgusted by the whole thing, but there is no way it will ever change.

stopped reading at 'naismith handball vs everton'

the list is obviously biased

The list relays possible penalties, all of them could certainly been given. Including Naismith

Please stop.

We're turning into Liverpool fans and RAWK posters.

It was a poor match, we were tired from PSG away, on another day, we have beaten them 4-0.

Please stop.

Which season did Liverpool have with 10 denied pens? The overreact to everything, today was a f**king disgrace

Spot on mate. Love the fella but that could cost us so much this season.

naismiths wasnt a penalty and the slow mo shows it clear as day

Did you see the banner at Selhurst park?

It's a bit different. They had about 10 penalties last season, they have no reason to complain. We are getting none, even the most clear ones aren't getting given.

How is he spot on ? I would love to see how you would have reacted if some twat tried to break your leg. There are a few people on here that don't understand human emotions.

I am getting pretty sick of everyone saying the forum is turing into RAWK every time someone complains about something.

This season has been, well.. lets just call it 'unfortunate' for us in terms of officiating. So I think a bit of complaining now and then shouldn't be so frowned upon. This is still a football forum where emotions run high and things get said in the heat of the moment. We are nowhere near RAWK in my opinion.

Scott

Potential leg breakers happen every season in the premier league. To see a reaction like that is rare.

At the end of the day matic saw red (literally). From when he reached Barnes he should've thought.

1- I'm okay my leg is fine

2 - we have a game to win it's only 1-0

3 - we have a cup final next week

4 - my team need me for upcoming league games

I'm not defending Barnes in anyway. You just don't react. I always stress this to people I know. Don't react and put yourself in the dirt too. Think about the bigger picture.

Like i said, you don't understand human emotions. It is incredibly hard to think that clearly when something like this has happened. You really think after an attempt to have his leg broken he is going to be thinking about those 4 things you mentioned ? His reaction was nothing compared to what it could have been. A little push.......big f**king deal. The guy just almost had his leg broken. Don't brush it off with all that "potential leg breakers happen every season" excuse. There is no need for those "tackles" to EVER happen.

I do understand human emotions Scott. And humans should not let emotions override their head.

Matic should regret his reaction today because it did nothing to benefit us. All it did was cost us 2 points. I'm also angry coz he's such a great player and we can't afford to lose him.

I feel like my point has been somewhat missed. Its a simple question of statistics, and statistically speaking (even removing a couple from my original list and ignoring the fact there are probably more I have forgotten), we are getting about 20% of penalties we should be getting this year and that level of officiating is completely unacceptable.

If a policeman was getting 1/5 of his arrests right and 4/5 wrong, how long would he last in his job.

If a baker was getting 1/5 of his loaves of bread spot on and the other 4/5 were not good enough to sell, he wouldnt last very long either.

This % of major decisions that referee get wrong is unacceptable and in a modern business like this with so much money riding on it, its outrageous human error, from someone who is not a sporting participant, is allowed to play such an influential role.

I have to agree w/ Scott. When I play & get jacked up like that, I want blood. Usually the pain overtakes me & I go back to the turf. I can understand Matic's anger, but at the same time you know lil' piss ant sides like Burnley will do stuff like that to get under you skin & make your react in a manner that will get you sent off. Matic needed to take the high road, but sometimes that is easier said than done.

But we do that every single day of our lives, emotions control the things we do, without them we are just robots

We have won more than double the penalties in 6 CL matches than we have in 26 BPL matches......exact same team, different refs..... and the lads didnt even play that well in the group stages.

or

We've had as many clear penalties denied in 45 minutes of football as we have had awarded in 2340 minutes of football

or

We've had twice as many players booked for diving, when in reality they were fouled and should of won a penalty, than penalties won this season

This is the way I choose to look at our penalties this season because without the humorous aspect, its just saddening and makes one believe that perhaps the refs aren't really that impartial after all.

It is just as logical to say that he cost us 2 points as it is to say he protected one of our star players from missing the rest of the season through injury.  We very may well of dropped those points with 11 men as we might have seen Hazard stretched off had Matic allowed Barnes to continue his assaulting spree unchallenged, as the ref was allowing.

Completely agree, well said. I'd prefer to back a blue, who has just done what many people on here would have done, than to say he cost us the game. I'm also not backing the refereeing decision to send him off, a push is a yellow card offence in my opinion, if you look at it again, I think Barnes makes an absolute meal of it anyway. As far as Barnes is concerned, it wouldn't surprise me if the FA did nothing about it, they'll probably mumble on about not being able to take action in this case. Look I'm moaning about the ref and the FA a bit, it's turning in to RAWK.

But we do that every single day of our lives, emotions control the things we do, without them we are just robots
