Paul Canoville 'Black and Blue'

Thanks. The book is a good read, and his experiences as a young player were horrible. I've always seen his eventual acceptance by the racists who barracked him as a real triumph for both him and the club, but I can imagine the timing of this programme will give yet more ammunition to those in the media who are constantly out to denigrate us.

Rather be a CFC fan where the club, when shown footage of fans engaging in discriminatory abuse on a public train in another country, cooperates with the authorities and actively looks to ban the offenders than support one of Manchester clubs who have done nothing when confronted with footage of their own fans engaging in discriminatory abuse in their very own stadium.

No club has a perfect set of supporters but I think we can be proud of how the club has reacted. Can't say the same for other BPL clubs who rather ignore or pretend the issues aren't t there.

Sickening what went on back then, even worse when it's his own fans doing it. Was a different time, might as well have been a different world.

Just shows how far society has come on, and what a great job organisations like Kick It Out has done. I know some people criticise them but that's usually because of their own views.

Ill get it on demand tomorrow

It's a great watch mate. Nevin, Eddie and Doobs come across brilliantly.

Makes me wonder why the club don't make more of him. Yes there's some stuff to be ashamed of but it shows just how far we've come.

Pioneer has been the word used and it certainly applies.

It was a totally different era. racism was normal for alot of fans, it happened every week. One of our proud chants pre cannoville was that we was "the only white team in London" Nazi salutes were regular on the shed with sieg heil being chanted. Every visiting black player was grunted at like they were a monkey. "you black bar steward" and "whos that up a tree - garth crookes" for that cup game v the y*ds in 82 totally normal chants for the time.It gradually diminished through the 80s but i remember the whole west stand echoing with "you black bar steward" to john fashanu as late as 89

Does he still have love for the club itself?

Yeah, he still supports Chelsea and has said in the past he's proud to have been involved in stopping racism with Chelsea. I remember in his book he said he still loves the club and will never stop.

That's really good news, as far as im concerned those that gave him sh*t weren't true Chelsea fans

Many of them were nothing more than 'plastic fans' in the truest sense - they would use Chelsea as a front for their own ideological agenda - c*nts the lot of them.

I take it you weren't a supporter who attended games back then.

Sadly racism was acceptable and the norm in those days. I was at Palace when Cannoville made his debut, coming on as a second half sub. The reception he got from his own fans was truly shameful, but as I said, that's the way it was back then.

So you can say that the treatment of Canoville by his own fans was unforgivable etc. But to say that they weren't true Chelsea fans I'm afraid to say is absolute bollocks!

They were deffo fans, and they could not in any way be called glory hunters. We were sh*t and took thousands everywhere. Different times thats all. Nevin challenges the racism on the documentary but has nothing but praise for the fans general support of the team in those days. Back then the roles were reversed. The travelling fans were champions league and the team were division 2 standard!

We've done this before. Thankfully times are different and Nevin both supported his team and its followers while also confronting racism. Not sure what you mean with role reversal, teams and fans come in different forms at different times.

The travelling fans are still Champions league it's the home fans that are generally sh*t nowadays.

Back on subject a number of these racist fans do still attend, difference is there views have been silenced and a number have been educated.

I know Paul never named the player responsible for his exit but does anyone have an idea who it might be?
