Why are Chelsea fans so obsessed with Gerrard and his slip?

Featured Replies

Not even in the top 10 players in his position of his generation, not a top top player for me.

I'm in for stick here but I can't agree with that, he would easily make the top ten on that. He's clearly been a top player in his time playing, I think bias is coming into play here. Whilst I do agree he's overrated and did not deserved a Football's Greatest documentary that he got on Sky he's certainly been a very good player.

Who would you have over him out of interest?

He was a top player but not as good as he is being made out to be right now. They seem to add the fact that he stayed at liverpool to the argument of how good he was. Last season was a poor to follow season simply because of the liverpool love in. As well as many people i know, and am good friends with, being extremely annoying about how they are going to win the league and laughing at many other teams and fans. I am talking about 10 FB statuses a day with 8/10 about the amazing liverpool and how they are back where they belong etc etc.

What adds to it is how he was giving a motivational speech about not letting it 'slip' and then thats exactly what he did.

Correct, he's always been overrated.

Why are Chelsea fans so obsessed with Gerrard and his slip? I'd like to know, I mean we torment the guy so heavily on it and have a whole chant on it (we don't even have a chant on Cech). I don't mean this question as an insult, just curious to know why we care so much about this incident and this guy.....

Why even pretend you're a Chelsea fan, what is the point ?

Why do you lot give every Chelsea fan and player stick just for breathing ? Gerrard get's enough praise from the media, he should be able to take a bit of banter. If he can't..........well, tough sh*t really.

Lampard

Scholes

Ballack

Makelele

Iniesta

Xavi

Pirlo

Xabi Alonso

Schweinsteiger

Kaka

If you can call the likes of Viera, Keane and Zidane of the same era, they are also obviously above him.

There are probably more i've neglected to mention too.

His whole Premier League career can be condensed into 2 seconds, mis controlling a simple pass then slipping over!

That is what he has contributed to Liverpool during the Premier League.

The best chance they've ever had of winning it, and he's the player that f**ked it up!!

Just how delicious is that?

You made a fake account to ask this question? Tell the rest of RAWK that it's because the Gerrard slip was hilarious and it led to the most bitter, jealous, annoying, self entitled, arrogant team in the league missing out on the title.

See, this is one of the main problems with Liverpool fans. They think that when one of their lot get's criticism, it's wrong, but when they do it to other clubs players they think that it is fine. They are a bunch of hypocrites.

Kaka didn't last long enough, Maka didn't play the same position and neither did Alonso, even Xavi plays deeper than Gerrard did. He's really only played deep in seasons and his position was always better higher up where he played in his pomp.

Kaka in his prime was arguably the best player in the world, Gerrard in his prime was never top 5. In terms of longevity yes Gerrard has far exceeded Kaka but then again so has pretty much everyone.

No two players do the exact same thing, it's a matter of personal preference as to how specific you want to be in terms of role, but all the players I named were center midfielders. If I were building a team and was offered any of those 14 midfielders (the 13 I mentioned + Gerrard) in their prime with which to base my midfield around, Gerrard would be my 14th choice every time.

edit: Actually i'm not sure that Pirlo's game is well suited to the PL, so if it were for a PL team I MIGHT take prime Gerrard over prime Pirlo, but thats as far as I could stretch.

Kaka didn't do it for long enough though

Gerrard has been consistent for longer and no he didn't reach the Kaka level that Kaka was at for one or two seasons but most players don't.

Fair enough if you feel that way but I think a lot of the hatred towards Gerrard is making you think a lot of this stuff. I would never have taken the guy over Lampard but I'm not gonna deny that he's been a top player in the Premier League era.

Which of the 13 players I mentioned would you take Gerrard over out of curiosity?

lol, cheers for the replies and trust me I am a Chelsea fan, I know its hard to believe but this was a genuine question. I hate Liverpool and Gerrard just as much but I don't take pleasure in it, just for pure banter. I didn't think this topic would pick up this much, just wanted fast replies, thats why I created an account here, it looked the most active of the Chelsea forums.

I have an account on this site (since 2012), just scroll down and you'll see some of my posts

if you still don't believe me, I write poems after some of our matches, its all there, this question was asked there by an Arsenal fan and I wanted to ask it here.

Sorry if I did offend anyone, I think I worded the question wrong

Well I certainly wouldn't take Kaka as he didn't do it for long enough and I think you have to think of the ones who never played in this league, could they adapt? Also you had a few in there that didn't even play in his position.

Everyone brings up that Lamps never scored in a WC, but everyone knows he actually did in 2010. Coming back from 2-0 down to 2-2 on the stroke of HT and it could have been the goal that resurrected England. We probably would still have lost, but far stranger things have happened.

Is JT's career all about him slipping in Moscow?

There are faults with him and the treatment he's getting in the media and from his own fans but he's been a great player and he'd have won the league title if he'd left Liverpool and joined us.

He didn't. That's rare nowadays. But some of the comments on here are getting ridiculous and I'm proud the tribute from the supporters in the ground was classier.

What's rare, being forced to stay at a club you tried to leave via family threats?

Agreed, I can't stand Stevie G but I'm not gonna let that hatred blind me to the fact he's been a top player. Whilst the slip will go down as one of the most memorable Premier League moments of all time I think his career will be remembered for many things like the Istanbul final, etc.

Whatever the reasons he's spent over 20 years at one club, 11 as captain and that's a remarkable thing.

But to your point, is it that different from when JT flirted with Man City to secure the best contract at this club?

Honestly some of the comments are ridiculous. Scouser levels in some cases.

The etc. being the last minute equaliser v Wet Spam.  Oh yes, the last minute winner v Olympiakos.

And, er, that's it, really. Apart from a few starfish dives.

The BBC are running Top Ten Gerrard moments on 5live this week, so I'll have to tune in to refresh my memory, which has been heavily influenced by the media obsession with two 3-3 draws and a narrow win in a CL group match, which happened a decade ago. We've had a few major tournaments since then in which he didn't show up.
