Well considering we had Zouma, Terry, Cahill and Ivan to play at CB and only one left back (who is actually a right back) it’s pretty obvious the answer would be Baba wouldn’t it.

Not sure this is so obvious, in recent seasons we have done everything possible play players out of position in defence.

We only have 1 LB( who is a natural RB) in our squad without Baba....it's pretty obvious when applying logic to it.

We had cover for the CB positions so we were obviously going to use baba regardless.

Yes it is when you apply logic.  I'm not suggesting Papy would have got the nod, I'm just saying it wouldn't have surprised me nearly as much as it should have if we started playing another central defender in the LB spot when we had a traditional LB in the squad.

Djilobodji is criminally underrated as a defender. He's good enough to be the lynchpin of our defence. It was a great buy by Eneramo, but a even greater waste by Mourinho.

Pssst Mourinho wasn't here to ship him out in January.

Clearly there's been more than one high profile person at the club who didn't think he was worth keeping.

Only me? I suggest going to the Werder Bremen forum and seeing how they rate Djilobodji. Or reading what many pundits in France had to say about him.

And most of you have no idea about Djilobodji and your basing your assessment on blind faith. Chelsea's handling of Djilobodji is reminiscent of Lukaku or KDB.

 

You never gave him a chance, ergo neither you nor me have been proven wrong. And unless Conte gives him a chance this status quo will never change.

Ehm... Please quote me on that, because I don't believe that to be true. At best I believe Mikel should be played ahead of Matic, because at it stands Mikel is the best defensive midfielder we have (although not entirely true because if it were up to me we would be playing RLC since September last year). Or have I suddenly been transported to some alternate universe where Matic hasn't been utter crap all season?

 

I do believe Mikel is wasted potential, but thats so last decade. Not point in beating a dead horse. Chelsea Mikel is Chelsea Mikel and won't ever be anything more. A good player to have at your disposal, reliable, pivotal at times, if seldom, underrated, but nowhere near his promise. Chelsea fans diss him too much, but I would much prefer to have someone instead of both him or Matic (Raingolan or Asamoah for example).

The fact that you deem Mikel reliable automatically means I'm not apologising for anything. If anything Mikel's biggest problem is his unreliability. Mikel has stolen a living for years at a top club and the fact that he's still with us really bothers me.

Might as well give him a shot as its not like our existing CB's aside from Zouma have shown any consistency. I don't think Terry had as good a year as most people seem to think and we should encourage competition, failing to drop under performing players is what doomed Mourinho so I don't see why Papy shouldn't get a chance to show what he can do.

SO if we had 1 left back we would choose to sell the back up left back and keep an extra central defender who we have plenty of cover for.

Yeah, I did the maths, and Baba still made 17 appearances for us, 11 in the league. Dont think Ivanovic has ever played left back for us.

 

Ivan is actually a CB, and was our cover when Zouma AND Terry got injured, and when we got hit with more injuries we used Mikel a couple times. We had had enough cover.

 

If we needed a cb and not a lb the situation would be reversed, wed be playing a more expensive cb, sending the cheap lb on loan and we'd be here moaning about the lb not getting game time because he didn't cost enough.

 

Although Kenedy is an interesting one because he cost under 7 mil pounds and you are saying he gets played over the more expensive player which kills the whole point of your initial question.
