Papy did a throat cutting gesture at the weekend to Mainz winger Pablo de Balsis and is to face action in Germany

I guess he has been hanging around Diego Costa too much

  • 1 month later...

Papy Djilobodji ends the season with a 88th minute winner, a MOTM performance.

In general he finishes the season at Werder Bremen with 2 goals, 1 assist, an average of 5 won headers per game, 11 defensive actions and a 7,3 Whoscored rating, the highest in his team (and just behind what Aubemeyang has)

Not good enough for Chelsea?

Not good enough for Chelsea?

At the risk of ridicule I don't mind Djilobodji personally, as a last resort i'd certainly have him in the team ahead of Miazga/Clarke-Salter/Kalas/Omerou/Hector next year. I'm still skeptical whether he could replicate his individual performance for Werder in the PL (Werder conceded the second highest number of goals in the Bundesliga this year), but I can see why Emanalo signed him.

I'd be very cautious about using WhoScored ratings to justify anything.

I've seen so little of him in the flesh that I really find it hard to argue for or against his inclusion in the squad with any authority. That said, from everything I've read, Djilobodji has performed about as well as we possibly could have hoped during his loan to Bremen.

With our looming dearth of senior centre backs (assuming that JT doesn't stay on and that Zouma won't be available until the autumn) it may well be worth having him rejoin the squad in pre-season to give Conte a chance to evaluate him first-hand. If he works out we may well have an Azpilicueta-esque bargain on our hands; if he doesn't then we haven't really lost out, seemingly Bremen would be more than happy to have him back.

Also there's always this...

Hopefully he'll be out the door this summer (along with Miazga/Kalas/Omerou).

Unsurprisingly I think Conte may sign a CB from Italy... maybe not Bonucci/Manolas... but wouldn't be surprised if we sign someone like Acerbi, Murillo, or Astori (Andrea Costa at Empoli may be an outside bet)

Djilo ONLY as a last resort

Maybe Kalidou Koulibaly, Djilobodji's Senegal teammate? Not as good as Djilobodji, but arguably the best in Italy.

I'd hope not personally, but only because I generally don't rate African CBs unless they grew up in Europe from a young age, i.e. Desailly (hopefully that doesn't come across as unpolitically correct lol, for all I know Koulibaly may have done so so I may be unfairly casting aspersions)

I think that goal was what potentially saved Bremen from relegation?

I'd totally forgotten we'd loaned him out.

Not from relegation, but thanks to the gaol they avoided playoffs and safely remain in Bundesliga.

Thanks to this thread I've spent the last hour listening to songs about the Senegalese national team:

The only Senegalese artist I was aware of before this was Coumba Gawlo, and that was only because she guested on an Alpha Blondy track. There's some really good percussion on some of these!

I am happy for Conte to make the decision about whether Djibodji has a place in the Chelsea squad next season.  I haven't seen enough of him to form any opinion.

So Papy is better than any CB in Italy? Ahhahahahaha :-D

You've altered that quote, surely. No way someone would actually think that.

I was having sort of a go, but...

Koulibaly is rated by Italian press as one of the best in Italy. Meanwhile I rate Djilobodji higher than Koulibaly... What can I do? Ignore the logical implications?

Djilobodji is criminally underrated as a defender. He's good enough to be the lynchpin of our defence. It was a great buy by Eneramo, but a even greater waste by Mourinho.

Stones was rated as one of the best defenders in the league by some people at the start of this season does that mean he actually is?

Using your logic then I can claim that Tomori is one of the best defenders in the BPL as I think he is better than Stones.

Djilobodji is underrated but to make comments like the one above really doesn't help the situation
