Papy Djilobodji

Featured Replies

I've never seen him play, I didn't even catch his 60 second cameo.

If he has a storming campaign i'd have no problem with him getting a chance here. The club have made all sorts of shocking decisions in the last 12 months, maybe papy was one of them.

There are loads of people clamoring to sign kante, who was playing at a lower standard than papy 12 months ago. Imagine if we had bought kante because we missed out on pogba. He would have been given the same treatment no doubt and would have shipped off on loan.

He didn't get a chance here, and some will point to the possibility he looked poor in training, but we have seen ivanovic perform woefully for months and still play every week.

Maybe papy is a dud, maybe he is our hidden gem that so many critisize our board for not finding. Unless he gets a chance to play regularly for us, no one really knows.

Spot on.

I wasn't happy with his signing because compared to what we should have been aiming for he was vastly underwhelming. But if this was a 19 year old out on-loan and he was getting these comments then we'd be clamouring to recall him for next season.

I haven't seen enough of him to know but this guy seems to be following him and I'm interested to read the updates. Maybe he's a dud, maybe he's a good squad player or maybe he's just inflating his price to sell. Either way it's no skin off my nose to let the new coach give him the once over and make a decision.

Thing is we already have younger CB's out on loan who are performing to a very high standard.

Christensen one of them and for me he should be the one to get the chance next season not Papy.

It's good however to see him have a good campaign as we will get a decent fee for him come the summer

Christensen is on a two-year loan so it's unclear if he can actually be recalled.

If JT does leave that leaves us with just Cahill, Ivanovic and Zouma as senior defenders, with Zouma out for 6 months at a minimum and a coach who may well want to play with 3 at the back. If Papy is a decent back-up then that saves us around £10 million.

We required a CB when Papy was here and that is no different.

He is not going to be able to replace Terry if he is to leave, we would need to bring in a first teamer of a very high quality and we will IMO if Terry does actually leave.

Cahill, Zouma, Ivan (hopefully we move Dave to RB) and a new CB/Terry with one of our promising youngsters recalled is enough.

Either way I don't see Papy getting another run out in our shirt.

We needed a new first-choice centre-back in my opinion and Papy wasn't that apparently. What I've said is that he might be a decent back-up.

It all depends on the new coach though. Either way it's good to see him getting good reviews on-loan whether he returns or not.

He's much better than Zouma and he's proving it. Maybe one day Zouma will be better but right now its shouldn't really be a doubt that Djilobodji is allround better.

And you guys still comment on the basis of your ignorance and most likely haven't even seen him play. I've seen both Zouma and Djilobodji on multiple occasions and there is no contest.

Its surprising how much trust you place in coaches judgement given what happened to Lukaku or de Bruyne.

Bollocks, pal.

Lukaku and De Bruyne were sold for more than footballing reasons, they both had major personality clashes with Jose.

Zouma was one of the most sought after teenagers around before moving to Chelsea.

He was part of the squad who won the double last season and has been a feature in the first team since. All at a mere 21 years of age.

What has Papy achieved in his career thus far? I mean he is in his late 20's now.

Not everyone has the luck of being hyped up to the heavens. Papy had to work for everything, including respect. He was the best player at his club Nantes for several seasons in a row (three I believe). Up until 2010 he was in footballing wilderness away from the eyes of scouts / club hype machines and he had to work for everything he achieved tooth and nail. Unlike French players like Zouma he worked his way up the ladder by proving himself to be the best at each and every club that gave him a chance.

Also: Zouma was not a key member of the title winning squad from last year (started 7 games).

And again: People are judging Papy on off-field issues like what club he played for, whether he was hyped up or not. If we look at specific aspects of the game like his stats, his goalscoring achievements and so on its not even a competition,,, Djilobodji hands down wins this. He's also bigger and stronger than Zouma, much more composed, more experienced and so on. I fail to see a single aspect related to FOOTBALLING SKILLS in which Papy does not outdo Zouma, except for probably tackling and temperament.

Zouma 2015/2016: avg duels won 64%, chances created 1, successful dribbles 4, dribbling success rate 58%, avg defensive actions per game 8, headers won 70% (2,9 per game), 2 defensive errors , interceptions 1,6 per game, clearances 5,3 per game

Djilobodji 2014/2015: avg duels won 61%, chances created 6, successful dribbles 19, dribbling success rate 69%, avg defensive actions per game 12, headers won 75% (3,1 per game), 1 defensive error, interceptions 3,3 per game, clearances 7 per game,

The only stats for 2014/2015 where Zouma is better he is: tackling 58% to 51% success rate and 80% passing completion to 76% (which does not take into account that Zouma is more adventurous with his passing),,, And Papy is more of a card risk (11 yellows by Papy to 0 by Zouma)

If we were playing via Moneyball rules Papy would be a steal.

I was among those who questioned the signing of Papy here because we have talented young defenders out on loan but after watching him play this weekend I think we have to give credit to whoever signed him for us because he is really a good player and to be honest he is better than Zouma. I underrated him initially because I have never heard his name nor see him play before he joined us.

@Stakes, for the first time I understand the hype about Papy.

Am not sure he is also thinking about coming back to us.

Well tbh he would have no choice as he is under contract and we can do whatever we like with him.

Comparing stats from one player in a tougher league to one a few levels below is a bit silly.

Taking his stats from the Bundesliga for the short stint he's been there puts him in an even better light... The stats are actually better. And thats despite the stinker of a game he had against Borussia M'bach.

If he's doing well, good.

It's having to put down one of our best performers to prove your point that makes people hostile towards you, and rightly so.

Unfortunately some fans only rate expensive players.

Well he made it clear in Germany right from the start that he wants to return to Chelsea asap.

Unfortunately some fans only rate expensive players.

Azpi, Cortouis (kinda), RLC, Zouma

Some fans don't rate people who haven't kicked a ball for us yet, and go on loan in germany, at the age of 27.

Obviously been subject of much derision and mirth on here since he signed, but fair play to the guy for a) playing well for Bremen from the start given his lack of playing time and b) to still have the hunger to play for us despite how he's been treated...says a lot about his character
