Cult Films

Featured Replies

Watched 'The Wicker Man' last night, and while my first thoughts were how strange it was, something clicked somewhere, and I absolutely loved it.

You know a film is good, when you cannot stop thinking about it the next day!

Anyone have any other cult films they'd recommend?

The Harder They Come could probably be called a cult movie, although the soundtrack has made more money than the movie. The soundtrack pretty much helped made reggae popular outside the borders of Jamaica. Jimmy Cliff plays the character Ivan in the movie, Clash sing about Ivan in their song "Guns of Brixton" and later Jimmy Cliff makes a cover version of "Guns of Brixton"... :happy001:

Big Lebowski is a pretty well known movie, but It definitely has a cult following. I mean, they have a festival for the fans of the movie where people dress up as the characters in the movie, go bowling, drink "Caucasians" and probably watch the movie as well. The Rocky Horror Picture Show is famous for their special viewings where people are encouraged to sing along and bring their own props.

I'm not sure if Tod Browning's Freaks has a cult following or is just an obscure movie. It's definitely worth watching anyway.

The Wicker Man is the one film that freaks me out more than anything I have ever seen!  I couldn't bear to watch it again.

I'm never very sure what constitutes a cult film.  There was a film in the eighties called "The Gods Must Be Crazy" which was described as a cult film.  I loved it, and the sequel.

The Wicker Man Oh Christ oh Jesus Christ.

If you change your mind, please make sure you watch the original and not the re-make with Nicholas Cage. "No, not the bees!" :happy001:

I am talking about the original - with Edward Woodward - the image of him in the cage with all the animals below him while the happy clappy nutters dance around him is one which haunts me!  I didn't even know there had been a remake and will certainly not be watching that!

The remake is truly appalling.

Another cult, and amazing, film is Betty Blue.

Another, Let the Right One In.

Haven't seen Freaks the original but saw Freakshow which I think was the remake and it was the most bizarre film ever, totally freaked me out I can tell you.

Trying to think of something that isn't immediately obvious, and Heathers comes to mind. A film that wouldn't stand a chance of getting made today.

Fight Club, Drive, Scarface, This is Spinal Tap, Blade Runner....

Do enjoy a cult classic.

These, and i'd add Trainspotting to the list too.

If well-known and commercially successful movies can be considered "cult', then Twilight has a massive cult following.

And no, that's not a typo.

Scum ,Quadrophenia, Deliverance, are some that spring to mind.....

That is certainly one for me.

Others would be The Warriors, The Wanderers & Blue Velvet.

Scum was an extremely disturbing film and not one I'd want to watch again in a hurry.   I remember that, bizarrely, when I was on holiday in Ibiza a couple of years after it came out, a bar was showing it - not the sort of film you want to watch while having a good time and getting pissed in the sunshine!

The Big Lebowski (it was already mentioned but I have to list it again, it's the '90s condensed into two perfect hours)

Brazil

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Reservoir Dogs

Taxi Driver

Thelma & Louise

Down By Law

Easy Rider

Clerks

Leningrad Cowboys Go America

Pink Flamingos

Naked Lunch

Repo Man

Freaks

Eraserhead

Dillinger Is Dead

True Romance

The Blues Brothers

Evil Dead series

Re-Animator

Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Akira

Godzilla

Plan 9 from Outer Space

Reefer Madness

If I remember anything else I'll let you know :)
