The only grievance some may have with him was that he was playing for a direct title contender at the time, but from memory we let him go so we couldn't complain about what he did next. There's no point holding grudges or feeling bad to be honest. He's still a legend in my eyes, and he's welcome back to the club in any official capacity if the board and Antonio feel he'll benefit the club. I agree in the long run it won't matter or affect his legend status, but one of the unwritten rule's when you have built such a legacy at a club is you don't join rivals. Funnily enough it's our grade two legend's like Carvalho and Essien who got that more than grade one like Jose, Cech and Lamps. Sorry but I think peopl hurt by that are simply over sensitive. It's not like he left under a dark cloud. We didn't renew his contract so he moved on. Also he may have gone to City when he should have been at New York but let's not forget he has a wife and kids here so been offered the chance to stay in England for longer was the right thing for him to do on a personal level. Family is everything and it's more important than anything else. Why? You idolise players for years and all off a sudden they turn out for a rival, that will hurt no matter what way it's spun. Even Jose hurts a bit seeing him in United, and that's despite his struggles and us going from strength to strength under a manager im totally behind and happy with. When you have such a massive status at the club it brings responsibility, if Giggs, Tony Adams or Carragher came to us for a year on loan before going to the US i would actually feel a bit uneasy, it would be like a solid part of United/Arse/Liverpool are at the club.

When they turn out for a rival after not been wanted by the club then yeah I think it's absolutely fine. Also it's not like we have any sort of historic rivalry with Man City. Also from a personal stand point I totally get why Lampard went to City. But at that stage he owed us nothing he'd given us his best years and we moved on. He didn't betray us and leave under a dark cloud or anything. Edited November 18, 20169 yr by Bobbywoodhogan
November 18, 20169 yr I don't feel betrayed by Lampard's stint at City. I think that's majorly down to him not being a success. Sure, he earned them 10 or so points from scoring winning goals and ... a certain equaliser. However, because they didn't win anything and we managed to wrap up the league comfortably, I have no hard feelings toward Frank. That being said, if he helped them win the league. I probably wouldn't feel this way.

Been just as much noise that he declined a new deal as opposed to not. And even fans who do say there not bothered i bet a lot are subconsciously. Edited November 18, 20169 yr by Argo

Let's just agree to disagree.

I think this is an interesting point. Wouldn't it feel uncomfortable to the Man City/Arsenal fans to have players who are, to this day, still unabashedly Chelsea fans, and who still regard the key and most honourable part of their careers to be as Chelsea players? My point is that it takes more than a late-career switch to erase what each of them has gone through to become a legend in blue. They still know exactly what they are, and those who look back upon their career in the future will know the same. Edited November 18, 20169 yr by PloKoon13

Of Course it doesn't change anything regarding status in the long run (it might make people who initially had Lamps as a fav player switch to say Drogba, but beyond that no) and his status as a club legend remains the same. The main point is, he is Chelsea, he built his identity around being a Chelsea player, he is part of our identity we are part of his. When that happens, joining rivals is a big no no. It's the equivalent of seeing Ronald McDonald in a burger king advert.
November 18, 20169 yr It's like hiring Ronald McDonald on the tills at the Burger King in Cheltenham for six months before he effectively retires after McDonalds have decided that they have absolutely no use for him.
November 18, 20169 yr If it was Liverpool or Tottenham I might feel differently. But Man City are not "rivals" in any sense other than they compete for the same competition.

Agreed that Man City aren't really traditional rivals; I essentially hold no ill-will towards them at all, in fact I find a lot of their players downright likeable: Aguero, Silva, Zabaleta. I would also say that out of our various title rivals over the past half-decade or so, they are the ones (with the exception of last season of course, when Ranieri led the heroes of Leicester to save football from the grubby mitts of Tottenham and Arsenal) whom I least minded winning the title when we were out of the picture.
November 19, 20169 yr I'd be surprised if anyone had any hate for him going to City. The fact he scored against us didn't really rattle me as he was doing his job, plus we went on to win the league. I'd love to have him back nurturing the youth sides, especially as he has an old school mentality.
November 19, 20169 yr Well now this is all cleared up, who wants to let Zola know we will give buy his Spurs coat for him if he ever decides to take a job there?
December 11, 20169 yr Lamps was home at the Bridge today. Fills my heart witj joy seeing this. And by the way, look at what a gent Mikel is, saying 'hi' to the missus.
December 11, 20169 yr Legend of the highest order as far as I'm concerned. Plus I think he'd make a hell of a James Bond if he ever wanting to get into acting.

Lampard is a handsome man.. I was about to say something about his missus being not so... but then after seeing that clip, I feel a bit sorry for her.. she seems pretty friendly too with the way how she responded to mikel but mikel went too fast before she could finish up her line, obviously she wanted a lil bit longer meet & greet session..
