June 19, 201610 yr Knew I should have resisted making that comment. It's not based on the last 2 games though. And it's not based simply on goal scoring in which case we would all have to admit Luis Suarez is currently the best player in the world and I don't want to do that. I guess I really fail to understand how you can't see what the best player in the world does other than scoring goals. But my last comment was a bit unnecessary and everyone has a right to their opinion.

June 19, 201610 yr At the moment Suarez is undeniably better than Penaldo. Sticks in your throat when you try and say it a bit, but it's difficult to deny.
June 19, 201610 yr Ronaldo is undoubtably a great player, his scoring record stands for itself. But how does he stand against other great players? For me he doesn't do enough to affect big games in the same way the 'greats' of yesteryear have done. I want to see the worlds best player grab a game by the throat when his team is struggling, Maradona, Pele, Zidane, Platini to name but a few would do just that. Twenty years on how will Cristiano be judged? I suspect it will be great goalscorer but not in the top five of all time players.
June 19, 201610 yr But by that logic you an take a player like Thierry Henry who never did much in the big games yet he is undoubtedly one of the best of all time. There are different kinds of great players Drogba and Cantona were big game players but didn't regularly score goals and guys like Henry and Shearer scored a ton of goals but didn't necessarily effect the big games like cup finals etc. Ronaldo is a regular goal scorer but he himself has scored big goals in big games, it's a myth he doesn't. June 19, 201610 yr I think it's partly his own choice though. He doesn't seem to care about anything other than scoring. When he was at United I used to enjoy watching him. I really thought he'd become one of those players who is capable of grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck. Now a days his general play is average at best. And he probably knows his team could get more goals by letting someone else take the freekicks, but he doesn't really care I think. Even if he only scores 1 in 50, it's better than nothing in his mind. At least that's my take on it.

We are talking about worlds best , I agreed he is was a great player but like the others you mentioned wouldnt make the top 5 in my opinion. Others will have a different opinion of what they want from their all time best, it is all down to ones own choice.
June 19, 201610 yr Paddy Power ?@paddypower 2h Messi could miss his next 147 freekicks and still have same conversion rate (2/1%) as Ronaldo.
June 19, 201610 yr Ronaldo is undoubtably a great player, his scoring record stands for itself. But how does he stand against other great players? Such as the game against Sweden? http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx09LVxP6Jo I'd be here all day posting Madeid and United examples. But there's an international one to watch.
June 19, 201610 yr Such as the game against Sweden? I'd be here all day posting Madeid and United examples. But there's an international one to watch. To quote Sean Connery 'why bring a knife to a gunfight?' That was a qualifier to get to the tournament having failed in the group stages already. The players I named did it at the top level.
June 19, 201610 yr To quote Sean Connery 'why bring a knife to a gunfight?' That was a qualifier to get to the tournament having failed in the group stages already. The players I named did it at the top level. Premier League, La Liga and Champions League whilst being his national teams top goal scorer of all time. So you're now claiming Ronaldo, Crisiano Ronaldo, has never played and proven himself at the top level. The guy who is the all-time leading scorer in the Champions League. What on earth am I reading? What a lunatic. Yet you named Pele who never left the Brazilian league. Utter maniac.
June 19, 201610 yr why insult? no need . I had previously stated that he is a great player but to my mind history wouldn't put him in the top five. IT IS ALL OPINION!!!.
June 19, 201610 yr It's nuts to claim he has never proven himself at the top level. It's beyond belief.
June 19, 201610 yr I think he has a claim for top 5-10 all time based on goal scoring alone. I don't think it's nuts to claim that he hasn't really put a stamp on any of the champions league finals or major tournaments he's played in.
June 19, 201610 yr It's nuts to claim he has never proven himself at the top level. It's beyond belief. Contrary to what you may believe , I am not a Ronaldo hater. I enjoy seeing great players put in great performances.I once queued all night to get a ticket to watch ManU play simply because Maradona was playing. With that in mind i want to see them show up on the biggest stage and show us their wares, affect games in a way that other players only aspire to do with a performance that leaves us purring. Ronaldo as yet hasn't grabbed me in such a way, I sincerely hope he does, though time now isn't on his side.

Ronaldo really does deserve to be in any top 5 of all-time easily IMO but of course I respect yours.
June 19, 201610 yr Personally i don't think Ronaldo is in the top 5 best FOOTBALLERS right now. Messi, Suarez, Neymar, Modric, Iniesta, i think all of these players are better footballers than him. Ronaldo is an incredible goal scorer ( with the amount of shots he takes he should get a lot of goals ) but i don't think he is an amazing all round footballer. I can think of many down the years that were better at playing the game than him. He's up there with the very best, but i think i could name many players that have been better than him over the years.
June 19, 201610 yr Eden or Ronaldo? At his best, i would rather have Hazard. He put's the team before anything else.
June 19, 201610 yr At his best, i would rather have Hazard. He put's the team before anything else. I respect your opinion, but Ronaldo is a million times better than Hazard at his very best. Guy's a freak phenomenal athlete with an utterly ruthless drive to better himself, would make most people's all time XI
June 19, 201610 yr I respect your opinion, but Ronaldo is a million times better than Hazard at his very best. Guy's a freak phenomenal athlete with an utterly ruthless drive to better himself, would make most people's all time XI Unfortunately I agree, maybe not a million. Ronaldo is a bit freaky though.
June 19, 201610 yr No way hazard comes close to a peak Ronaldo. I think Ronaldo will fall behind messi when it comes to best of all time, however Ronaldo has to be pushing for being a top 5 player. In my time sort of since 95, I would say the top 5 I've seen would be: 1 messi 2 Ronaldo 3 C. Ronaldo 4 Zidane 5 Ronaldinho Can't really comment on anyone before that.
June 19, 201610 yr Why are France wearing white? This increasing trend to wear alternative kits even when there is no clash is really annoying. It happened a lot in the Prem last season and it's now spread to the international game. I really dislike it.
