Sergi Roberto

Featured Replies

Starting to hear reports that Sergi Roberto is being linked to us for 40m
He can play RB/RWB and can play in midfield.
I say we go for it if it's true.
Plus it's another Spanish player to add to our collection.
It's like Pokemon, one day we'll have them all.

Wasn't he the young promising player that scored the crucial goal against PSG last year ?

That's him!

I honestly think we'll pull this one off, we only have to meet the release clause and then it's up to the player himself.

The player being La Macia graduate you'd think Pep would be all over that deal.

Plus, I heard Man City are desperately short of fullbacks.

Nah, they're looking at Bertrand as well now, so they should be set with about 7 of them.

Next season they'll be playing a formation with no centre backs, 4 wingbacks and 6 attacking midfielders. You heard it here first.

What about a quarterback? No City lineup is complete without a top class quarterback. Pep better get on the phone with Tom Brady pronto.

I guess City's owner has no idea who that is. If Pep says he wants Chris Froome, KDB and David Silva better go out and buy a bike.

I must admit that i haven't watched Barca for a good few years but this Sergi Roberto kid is very good from the compilation of youtube vids. He has the potential to become a WC RB for club and country and I can see why Barca had no qualms about letting Alves go.

The same age as Carvajal tho, wonder how someone like him remained obscured is beyond me.

Triggering the release clause though will add tax of between 20% and 47% on top of fee, as we have to pay the money to the player to get his own contract release. Better to get Barcelona to accept slightly less, the art of good negotiation.

To be honest I don't really see that happening. He doesn't seem to be a player Barca is willing to lose, becoming quite an integral part of their squad, so I don't see why they would accept less than the clause. One could even question  why he'd be tempted to leave them for us as his chances to become a regular starter in his preferred CM position might be even bigger at Barcelona than at Chelsea. So if there is a chance to sign him at all, then I think it'll certainly include paying the whole buyout-clause, which seems to be quite a fair price as well.

If the player is set on leaving , its upto us to negotiate with Barcelona a slightly lower fee even if its just 10 euros less than the buyout clause. He himself might be attracted by a higher wage as most of the wage bill goes on MSN. I would be very surprised if we paid upto 60m euro inc taxes for him tbh. There's a good article on the finances at Barca here https://www.managingmadrid.com/2017/7/6/15929848/barcelonas-managerial-incompetence-is-paving-the-path-for-future-real-madrid-dominance admittedly from a Madrid view which may tilt the argument.

Wouldn't want him as a RB/RWB. He's been a square peg in a round hole at Barca for a while. There is a reason Barca have gone out and bought a real RB. If we are signing him it should be for his natural role.

I actually quite like him, but didn't he get completely shredded by Draxler in the first leg of the CL tie? Granted they all did, in fairness.  And he did go on to win them the tie...

As has been pointed out, Barca don't play him in a way that maximises his potential, but think he could be a great WB for us. Can't see Barca being too desperate to keep hold of him either.

I agree, he's not a wing back and didn't look comfortable there. He's a central midfielder and that's where he looks a prospect.

I think he would be good at wing back for us, he would get much more support defensively playing for us, than he ever would get in a barca team.

I don't think he would be interested in coming here to play wing back though, he has said he prefers to play centrally.

I think the reason barca signed semedo was to allow sergi to play centrally which was a problematic area for them last season, since rakitic and gomes under performed.
