A Slazenger jumper I bought one in 1981 is about the same price now think I paid about £12 at the time. We have discussed the prices of Pringles on here before I think I paid about £20 in 1982 can't remember where I bought it from but do remember buying the fabric softener which was quite a weird thing for a 16 year old to buy. 😁 The diamond ones are horrible has to be said definitely belong at the Surrey golf course.

I remember watching Tony Jacklin on TV wearing this. My old man commented “ what a bleeding silly jumper, he reminds me of Bertie Wooster”

I thought it was superb. That was May 82- I got one November 82. Sometime probably in 85 a mate gave me his old burgundy, grey and white one, which was way out of fashion and he’d shrunk in the wash, which I wore on a building site and got covered in sh*t in no time. An ignoble ending to something that cost £45 in 1982

Great thread this, as an old 80s soul boy/casual who happened to go to Chelsea as well I remember all of the clothes and trainers mentioned. It was a youth movement which the media vwas absolutely clueless about and it has allowed a lot of rubbish to be published about it in recent years. One myth is that scousers invented'' casual...well that just isnt true, therre were two looks for starters...1- the tennis brands (Fila, tacchini, ellesse etc) with bleached jeans and trainers and then there was 2-The soulboy casual look, Golf Jumpers farahs rollnecks worn with loafers for going out to clubs and discos and with bleached and frayed lois with trainers for football.

The scousers may well have popularised the 1st look that is true but the 2nd look probably pre dated it springing up originally from the soul crowd and before that the black lads who were involved with soundsystem battles etc and already wore elements of it (slacks and Gabicci knits).

There was a short time perhaps less than a football season when the two looks overlapped in London then it all moved on again with London lads moving on to more expensive gear like Armani, burberry aquascutum jaeger etc...than after a while the paninaro look crept in and it was all timberlands, chipie C17 and Best Company etc but what most people seem to regard as casual (look number 1) was over and done in London well before 1985. You can see it in the photos of that era that the look number 2 lasted far longer but as mentioned mutated into something else eventually.

Being over 50 it's hard to get away with tracktops these days but the polo /shirt/smart jumper with jeans and smart trainers is pretty enduring...viva la casuals...

Whole world agrees about scousers but I will go with you as you seem to know what you are talking about.

Your old man might be right and Jacklin might have thought the same yet how much was he being paid to wear it?

I appreciate this comment isn't the point of the thread, but how sad to see that scene and compare to now. You'd never see that many kids going to top flight football with their pocket money any more. Now the preserve of middle aged men who can afford £100 a week to watch the game.

And whilst I'm busy being off topic, this photo also struck me. When I was a kid the lads on the terraces looked well hard and frightening. But looking at those lads back then and comparing to the gym/protein shake/steroid/cocaine fuelled lads I see out in my home town on weekends today, they look like they're squabbling over who is going to help an old lady cross the road.

Fair point. The body shape of young males has completely changed over a generation, even though they’re “ fake muscles” I do however think, that certainly until House Music exploded in 88, we lived in more violent times. Where I came from, pub fights, nightclub fights in those places you had to put a tie on to go in, football fights we’re common place. Not as well built as the current crop, but more GBH Merchants

West Ham away 81. Andy Swallow there with his flight jacket on

Wasn't he in that telly episode that followed the ICF lads around knocking on doors trying to sell tea cloths and dusters and generally talking bollocks ??

I can't remember the name of the show, but it was f**king funny , they obviously thought it was going to be a serious documentary instead of a piss take.

That’s right. It was called The Knockers. Highly amusing. There was a follow up in 93 showing had the lads in the documentary had faired a decade or so after. Both available on YouTube. Yes Swallow featured.

Yeah that was it mate !

I also saw the follow up now you mention it, weren't most of em doing well ?.

A West Ham fan down here on the south coast reckons he saw Swallow at a game with a team he was involved with play against Worthing a few years ago.. Can't remember who the team was though.

He was chairman of Grays Athletic. Last I heard he had a pub in Chingford. There’s also a YouTube documentary called Acid House Gangsters centred on Exchoes Nightclub in Bow and a pirate radio station. Wasn’t in that my scene but my brother was. An ex ICF splinter had a reputation for CS gassing places and taking over security at raves. They were very entrepreneurial

Hi mate, while we're off topic I watched the 1999 Woodstock documentary that ended flames and violence. All the blokes were muscle bound, aggressive and hyped up.

In the 60s , the guys were skinny, relaxed and gentle.

The '99 event is a horror show , it's on Netflix. Oh , btw the music is sh*t too .!
