February 23, 201214 yr Borini is now seemingly in with a shout of starting for the full Italian National team. That would be 5 of Arnesen's products that have hade a start for their national team if it were to happen. I agree, that his doing well hurts more, especially when you see that we are struggling for goals, and that he seems to be playing with careless abandon. And I don't think he would have cost that much to keep. I think this is the problem with the constant switching of managers, none of these kids are going to get a look in. I read the other day that Borini had a lot of good things to say about Carlo. So if Carlo was on his way out the door, and he knew it, you can understand why Borini wanted to leave.
February 23, 201214 yr I think Borini suffered because we very rarely play two up front. I suppose during the beginning of Carlo's reign when we were playing two up top in front of the diamond he might have fancied himself because he fit in the system, but he is quite simply not a lone striker and that is what we play more often than not. I can imagine us trying a compromise where he plays some Sturridge-esque role on the right, but I think it was best for him to move on in order to further his career in his natural role.
February 23, 201214 yr He was one I really wanted to succeed here, but he's just another one in a long line of talented players who didn't get a chance because we went out and bought a ridiculously overpriced player in his position instead.
March 4, 201214 yr Borini scored another today. Also, remember Miroslav Stoch? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6kCjnvC58Q&feature=youtu.be
March 4, 201214 yr Our youth policy is amazing. Step 1: Identify quality youngster in the youth team Step 2: Give him 1 sub appearance to get his hopes up about making it here Step 3: Sign £50m player in his position Step 4: Release youngster for pittance Step 5: ??? Step 6: Profit???
March 10, 201214 yr Soon as I saw this thread pop up I knew it'd be another Borini goal. Looking at how well people like him are doing and then looking at the striking options we have and the sheer amount of money they cost for very little return the last year or so, kind of makes me want to get very depressed and eat the last 2 double chocolate cookies in the kitchen. March 13, 201214 yr http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11861/7590436/Ancelotti-a-fan-of-Borini Ancelotti a fan of Borini PSG boss says Roma striker is next big thing in Italian football Paris Saint Germain boss Carlo Ancelotti says Roma striker Fabio Borini is the next big thing in Italian football. The 20 year-old has started 14 Serie A games this season and netted nine times for his club. But Ancelotti, who knows the player well as the pair both used to be at Chelsea, says he has no plans to bring the youngster to the French capital. "Borini is a good kid who plays football very well," Ancelotti told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I knew he would do well in Italy, he has a nose for goal and a speed that few others have. I like his anger, his meanness, his desire to always go first on the ball. "Fabio is a potential champion. And the fact that (Italy's coach Cesare) Prandelli has already called him is a good sign. I would not be surprised if Borini is called up for the European Championship's. "Why haven't I brought him to PSG? Because he's not for sale, and I think that Fabio will stay in Roma for many years. I wish him a long and successful career."
March 13, 201214 yr Aye. It's funny how you can suddenly go off people. Even fat congenial Italians with comical eyebrows.
March 13, 201214 yr Should have taken a chance on him. By all accounts he wanted quite a lot of money, but f**k it it's still much less than people like Drogba and Torres are on and he was clearly a good young player. :'(
March 13, 201214 yr Didn't he want to go back to Italy anyway? If he wanted to leave there isn't much we could do about it.
March 13, 201214 yr Author Didn't he want to go back to Italy anyway? If he wanted to leave there isn't much we could do about it. If I remember correctly it seemed he wanted to go back to Italy and his agent wanted a ridiculous amount of money for him. Its very unfortunate he left, he really did look the part and a great player in the making. But if he wanted to leave then theres not really a lot we as a club could do.

Well if it works out for him, and I hope it does, at least we know that our academy is producing top players now. We just need to work on integrating the ones we want and making money on the ones we don't. To be fair Bertrand looks to be getting his chance now and Josh has at least got an opportunity.

But he probably only wanted to leave because as usual (as a young player with CFC) he was getting totally overlooked and not getting anywhere with us. IF we had made him feel wanted and given him games instead of playing no-hopers like Kalou ahead of him all the time, he just might now be enjoying life in London and banging goals in for us like he is in Italy. Gutted.
March 13, 201214 yr Author I agree young players dont get time at our club, its pretty obvious. But he wasnt up against Kalou now was he, he was up against Drogba for a spot, a player he was never going to usurp. Its a similar situation to the Parker and Diarra one, they are young players earning their way into a first team squad place behind some of the best players in football. Young players now seem to demand a first team place at a very young age now, they seem less willing to wait for their chance. Its not many years ago a player would still be though of as young at 23-24, that would be a normal age to break through. They now want to be in at 18-19.
March 13, 201214 yr I believe we may have been able to fit him in for the 18m plus wages we paid for another young striker last summer.

It's a good point and shows how football has changed - all boils down to money and agents I guess. Whereas in the past players would have been happy to come through the ranks and do their fair share in the reserves - reserve team football seems to be looked down upon nowadays. You either break into the first team or get loaned out. Play in the reserves and you're a bit of a no-hoper. It's always a tough call on young players. We all have views on how good some of them are (or not). A club can only keep so many on the books and I wonder how many people are involved in that decision? It surely can't be down to just the manager? Being specific to Borini, we didn't do anything like enough to keep him and although I wish him all the success, I will also be totally frustrated that we cocked things up.
March 13, 201214 yr No young player is ever going to become the finished article without a good experience of first team games, but it seems that our managers must feel that they are never in a position to give these players the time they need, because the young lads are never given a fair crack of the whip. It is all well and good for Carlo Ancelloti to come out now with no pressure and say Borini is a top player, but where was he when Borini was stil on our books? He never gave the lad a chance! It has taken a brave team and manager at Roma to stick their neck on the line and give a chance to a relatively unproven player... and look at the rewards that are now being reaped for player and club. It has also justifed both Borini's decision to leave (as he would never have been a full international at this stage if he had stayed with us) and the high wage demand that the agent was asking for when he was negotiating with us....lets be honest even at £50 or 60k per week, he would have still been seen to be an abslolute bargain for an Italian international striker.
March 13, 201214 yr I see young Josh isn't seeing much playing time at Swansea. Not sure what that's telling us. Rogers was keen to get hold of him, so I assumed that he might play him. I'd have thought that he'd fit their style perfectly.

I'd have thought that he'd fit their style perfectly. Must admit it is a little worrying. I didn't realise just how good that Swansea side are - especially at home and it might well be that Rodgers doesn't want to upset a winning team. You ncould argue that if Josh is as good as some say he is (like me for example!) then he would get into the side no matter how good it was. I personally think it is down to complete lack of playing time under AVB which would also mean lack of match fitness and confidence. Let's just hope he gets some games soon. He should have gone to Norwich.......!
March 14, 201214 yr I suppose the Josh thing may be down to seeing him through optimistic blue-tinted glasses. We're all so desperate for just one youngster to make it here I suppose we probably hyped him up much too much. Hopefully he'll get a go of it next year and break into the side, but my optimism has faded somewhat since the start of this season regarding him. Edited March 14, 201214 yr by Zeta Orionis
April 1, 201214 yr Rumours circulating around Australian media that the one and only Zola is coming to Melbourne to talk with the board about becoming the new coach for Melbourne Victory. I was pretty excited about this, but Zola's agent came out today and denied it saying he's been offered jobs from big clubs in Europe. Should be more on this later today, he was also linked earlier in the season to the Melbourne job when the then coach was sacked and now the spot is open again as the interim manager Jim Magilton is confirmed to be going home
