Torres vs Drogba - the new Gerrard vs Lampard Argument

Featured Replies

Just curious to get a blue perspective on this argument.

For years our lot and your lot have disagreed about who is better out of Lampard and Gerrard and it was always a daft argument because we would always side with the man who plays football as if God was moving his feet ad you would always side with the man who ate too many dolly mixtures.

Now the argument has probably moved on to the debate between Drogba and Torres. I am not going to waste time asking who you think is better because I think it will be exactly the same as the Gerrard vs Lampard debate. We obviously think Torres is better and you will obviously think Drogba is better. (Although Torres clearly has age on his side but that is only of use to us if we can keep him long term)

So rather than ask who you think is the better of the two I guess I am just interested in your opinion of Torres.

Most Liverpool fans hate Drogba - that goes without saying - but I actually don't. OK when my Grandpa asked me to bring some friends to the 25th anniversary of his incarceration in the old Walton Gaol, Didier wasn't top of the list however I don't despise him in the way I do say Gary Neville. Yes he goes down like an Essex whore on rent day and yes he has the pain threshold of a three year old child but he is undeniably a bloody handful for defences. I would have him at Anfield in a heart beat - would you welcome Torres?

Easy scouser, that Essex rep is a bit overstated, I am from there and have seen more whores out of Essex (though there are a few clubs round here that would see even you get laid). I also wouldn't be too quick to quote Didi as having a pain threshold as a three year old, with one or two of your players going down like a sack of spuds lately.

Would I take Torres at Chelsea, probably not. No disputing his goal ratio, but against the right club, he can look very weak (cough)

..and yes, Didier is far more a player.

We were linked with Torres for a couple of years before he decided to chance his luck amongst the burglars. I think the reason we didn't go for him was that his goals per game ratio was pretty average in Spain.

Since that day he skinned Ben Haim he's been phenomenal at Anfield, and his finishing is top quality, but as an all-round No9 Drogs offers far more. Yes he comes across as a big baby who makes a meal of every litte knock, and when he's not in the right frame of mind he's a liability, but on his game he's better than Torres, and he's been a major factor in our success since he joined in 2004. He's got a lot of football left in him, and he's made up his mind that Chelsea is where he belongs (that took him a few years, it's true).

Come the transfer window we'll be looking at top players who are no longer in the race for major honours, so obviously Torres would be someone we'd consider, while Drogs ist at the ACN.

Torres has a horrible injury record. It could get really frustrating at times when your leading striker is injured for most of the season. Drogba provides that bit of confidence, so no, I wouldn't take Torres for Drogba even though I think the former is more skillful and a quality goal scorer.

we would always side with the man who plays football as if God was moving his feet

I always knew Zola was popular amongst non-Chelsea fans as well. :D

That Chelsea V Liverpool was the game EVERYONE said would prove who was better out of Drogba and Torres. From what I remember Drogba set up two goals, Torres was woeful.

Although you could just bring up the point that John Terry is on great form while Carragher is shocking, making it easier for Drog.

I never really intedned this to be a Dogba vs Torres argument because I knew you guys would always choose Drogba just as we would always choose Torres - I suppose I was more interested in purely your oinion of Torres.

However when you do cmpare the two I think it is a little too convenient for you to compare Torres now with Drogba now as you are looking at Drogba when surrounded by good players playing well with Torres who is surrounded by a team drastically out of form.

Any striker, Drogba included, woul;d struggle to perform at their best if the majority of the team around them were under performing.

For example Drogba wasn't so great in either of the past two seasons and I would say Torres was far better than him in both of them. Now Drogba may have his excuses - injuries and not liking the manager but surely that is no different form us claiming Torres can blame injuries and lack of support.

i think youve hit upon the biggest difference between the two, and the main reason DD is better than torres. if liverpool are struggling, torres cant be relied upon to create a goal from nothing, cut off the supply and you take torres out of the game as we proved earlier in the season. Drogba on the other hand can win a game from nothing simply because of his ability to hold the ball up and batter defenders. in my opinion torres is a more natural finisher, but Drogba is a much better all round footballer.

I would love Chelsea to sign Torres (Can't ever see it happening mind) as he is a superb player and in an average team at present.

He does let things get to him in games when things don't go his way and his performance suffers big time, but i think that is totally down to the captain and the manager to irradicate this, i think JT would have a word in his shell like ala Drogba.

Torres is a fantastic player and now worth a heck of a lot more than the £(whatever it was) you paid for him. His big plus over Drogba is his age and also the fact he doesn't have Drogba's over-acting traits. Love Torres as a player, his pace and skill and the goals he scores - brilliant.

But he does have off days (probably not helped by the current Liverpool team and their form) and the big concern is his injury record. It's not great when the player who is clearly head and shoulders better than the rest of the team is in the situation where you have to pick and choose the games he is able to play in.

Torres is an outstanding talent, and he is by far the best finisher in the league and he's lightning quick. That's where I think he falls short of Drogba. Drogba can play up top on his own and with a partner. He can hold the ball up, he has more pace than anyone gives him credit for, he can score goals from absolutely anywhere.

I don't think I've really seen Torres play up front with a good partner (I don't count Keane in this one, 'cause he was just terrible for 'pool), that's where you need to invest. Kuyt isn't a good enough striker. Ngog is about 12. Babel is the only one that could supplement Torres, and even he's quite poor (and yet, he's one of the few that can change a game for 'pool, why Rafa doesn't play him more baffles me completely).

I don't think Torres is liking having to play up front on his own. Gerrard plays as a support striker, but he needs an out and out striker to help him out, maybe a big guy that Torres can ghost off.

Would I like to buy him? Personally, I'd prefer Aguero, cause Aguero's more the player we need, but if he did come to us, which I know he never would, then I wouldn't be disappointed.

Two great players who bring different dimensions to a team in the way they play so comparing the two doesn't come into it as far as I'm concerned. I do think they would play very well together though.

Hilarious people saying torres doesnt over react and dive about like Drogba does. Nobody remembers the game a couple of weeks ago when every time he lost the ball he was moaning at the ref and acting like a spoilt brat, i genuinely thought at one point he was gonna go sulk in a corner and start crying.

Didier without question

Pretty much sums it up right there.

-Agree with Jack that Torres reputation is certainly beginning to catch up to him. When he is marked out of games, he doesnt lower his head and redouble his efforts, he gets pissy, which is counter productive.

-Torres, while a brilliant player, would just not be as effective as Drogba is in our system, imo. These days we dont have alot of wing play, so when so much is over the top or through the middle, we need someone who has both the size and skill to plough through the middle and open up room for Anelka, Lampard, and whoever else. Take away that physicality, and I just do not think it would work as well.

-I was gonna let that Gerrard/Lampard comment go, but if the Drogba/Torres thing goes the same way, and one player ends up being the one with "more potential and more skill" for years and years, and the other just demonstrates consistency, versatility, excellence, and the ability to cut it in the biggest games, then I will be more than happy to let people make their judgements

geezer brings up a good point, Drogba with Torres, or for that matter with Rooney, would be a sight to see. Pure pace or pure power

^ This completely hits the nail on the head. And it's because of this that these two would make an absolutely world-breaking partnership.

So yes, I would welcome Torres at Stamford Bridge. It would be a shame to drop Anelka, though.

Torres would be very welcome at the Bridge in my view but our ladies team is doing really well so not sure that he would get a regular place
