Avengers: Age of Ultron

8/10

Good, but not as good as the first one. I think this one didn't have the novelty factor of being something new and that's what partially hurt it.

I just gave in to temptation and ordered On The Waterfront from Amazon (with the Shed End connection, of course).

I saw it years ago and thought it was wonderful then.  I am hoping I will still find it wonderful.  Marlon Brando, Rod Steiger, Lee J. Cobb and Eva Marie Saint.

Unable to sleep last night, I eventually got up and watched A Man Escaped.  I can;t remember who to thank for having pointed me in the direction of this wonderful film.  I know it was someone in this thread.  So, whoever you are, I do thank you, and for all of those who might also like to watch an excellent film relating a true war time story about a Frenchman who escaped from a Nazi prison,

here are the details from Imdb

I think it was youlots who recommended it. I haven't been watching many films lately but when I do A Man Escaped is high up on my list.

cheers milady....now that you've come this far...it's time for the main courses: first up, order a copy of Au Hasard Balthazar (Bresson) & The Wages of Fear (Clouzot). These are difficult & yet totally uplifting viewing experiences: both are in fact incomparable films & imo the two best french films ever made. But only if you're keen.

Blimey!!  You'll be giving me a "safe" word soon!

I have ordered Au Hasard Balthazar, and will let you know later if I agree with you!  Wages of Fear will have to wait.

Thanks!  Your previous recommendations have all been very satisfactory, so no reason why these shouldn't be.

Not in the same league, but last night I watched The Impossible. The critics pinned this correctly I feel, but I felt sick and claustrophobic during some scenes. On the whole I thought it fairly well done and it did prompt a great deal of thought.

Many many years ago, I had on video a brilliant film called At Play In the Fields Of The Lord.

I just tried to buy it in DVD - to buy it new from Amazon costs over 34 pounds!  Even second hand it will cost me nearly 20 quid byt the time I had postage!

Has anyone esle seen it?  Youlots? Maksimov?

Yeah I saw it on video about 20 odd years ago. An ambitious attempt to film Matthiessen's complex novel & for the most part done very well albeit that it was always going to be a very difficult exercise. Well cast & shot & some of the acting is very good, some of it though is pretty hackneyed - Kathy Bates for example. The trouble, however, was that for most viewers it seems to me that it was always going to be compared and/or valued against The Mission. The latter is of course a classic film which should have easily won best picture at the 1987 Academy Awards but, of course, lost to Platoon (which is & always has been totally over-rated pulp) and, of course, Salvador was not even nominated by the Academy for best picture that year which is also scandalous. Anyway I digress: APITFOTL - a good film but thematically & otherwise, a much paler imitation of The Mission.

So WHY is it so expensive?

And I will put The Mission on my list of DVDs to buy.

I've never seen any of the Mad Max films (caught bits and pieces of them when I was growing up but never watched them start to finish).

It's mainly because I just don't like Mel Gibson... Lethal Weapon, no thanks. Anti-English movies Braveheart and The Patriot? Not for me.

Anyway with the new Mad Max film coming out this week I thought I would watch them all so I can better enjoy the new one which looks great.

Watched the 1979 original on Saturday night and it's kind of what you would expect for a low budget Australian independent movie. There's some decent bits in there and maybe it's just because it hasn't aged that well I was quite surprised that the film managed to spawn a sequel.

Watched Mad Max 2 on Monday night and with a bit more money thrown at it, the world comes to life a lot more and the film is a lot more enjoyable... Have to say though, Max as a protagonist doesn't really do much expect get the sh*t kicked out of him all the time.

Going to watch the third one either tonight or tomorrow.

It's quite funny to think that the reboot looks set to top the originals (based on the reviews I have read) and it shows that sometimes revisiting a franchise can work (doesn't hurt that the original director has returned to the series rather than someone else having their own vision).

It won't be hard to top Beyond Thunderdome, that was a dog. I quite enjoyed Mad Max 1 and 2 when they first came out. Wouldn't swear to it but I think the first one was a B movie in the days when you used to get two films to view for your money.

I can see why they chose to revisit this franchise. The premise is quite interesting and the world it is set in has a lot of room to play with but the original films are all a bit take it or leave it so it's easy to see how they felt they could improve upon the originals.

Very different to the recent remakes of Total Recall, Robocop and Old Boy where they were remaking films that were already very good.

Spooks: The Greater Good

It's clearly not a Bond or a Bourne but it's good if you were a Spooks fan. Peter Firth, as always, is the star of the show.
