The Times and Daily Express are reporting that Chelsea will release Joe Cole and Ballack today (9pm EST) ....is this for real?

It's all over the tabloid, I think a confirmation by Chelsea FC is due soon just to put everyone out of their misery. Would be good to keep Cole and Ballack, bu at the end of day, someone has to pay the bill. The combined wages for these 2 are over 10 Millions a year, we could make good use of the saving if we want to be self sufficient.

Reported pretty widely and shouldn't really come as any surprise. Ballack being released surprises me more than Cole as surely 99% of us have accepted Cole won't be with us next season.

If it is true then it very much signals that we will be investing in a new midfielder as I doubt we will go into the new season with Essien, Lampard, Mikel and back up from the up and coming youth players (assuming Deco does leave as well).

Don't get too excited about Deco leaving Loz! Chelsea winning the double and Deco leaving? Could be the greatest year of your life.

Reported that Cole turned down £90,000 a week. Disgusting amount of money, and total disregard for the club. If he ends up signing for Arsenal or Tottenham I would never forgive him.

Ballack will be no surprise and I guess with all the paper talk Joe woulldn't be either, but the timing is strange / poor.

What if Joe has a great World Cup and he is England's best player? (Like he was at the last World Cup). We let him go on a FREE to Arsenal or Utd?

Surely we should at least wait until after the World Cup?

It's bollocks.

Ah, responded to this in the Joe Cole thread, didn't see it here.

It is a shame, but perhaps its time for a fresh start. I'll always be thankful for what Joe done for us, but if you want more money or want regular first team football - you have to earn it before you get it in a new contract. We stuck by him throughout his injury nightmare, we have been more than loyal to him.

Both make sense, to be honest. If we are serious in promoting academy players, Ballack was in the way of Matic and Kakuta, and Joey was in the way of Stoch. If we see the latter replacing the former, I will be happy with that.

Joey leaving is a sad sight, indeed, but in the end, if he wants more than the club is ready to give him (and the club are absolutely right in this regard), he has to go. Which makes me think this view of him being a true blue and one of us is false. You are either a professional footballer and money and playing chances come first, or you are a fan of the team first and money (and he makes a killing compared to most people) comes a distant second. There might be other issues at hand here, but absent that, Joe has certainly dented his image among Chelsea fans.

Ballack has been a good servant, albeit an ineffectual one at times, and I for one wouldn't mind keeping him for another season for the sake of keeping an experienced midfield player in the squad while the young players get blooded (assuming Belletti and Deco leave). Other than that, a new signing would have to be made, as loz said. Good luck to him, wherever he may go, though I am sorry he couldn't fulfill his dream to win the Champions League in his career.

The annoying thing about losing Cole isn't that he's valuable to Chelsea, because he simply didn't show enough...but it's devastating in that he is a good bloke, and an experienced international, and English to boot, so everyone knows that he has ability...and the thought of letting our rivals snag him, for no cost, and in all likelihood, on wages that are no more than what we offered him, is extremely frustrating.

Ballack I was hoping would re-sign for one more year, at hallf wages...but I would rather get rid of him than have to pay him more than 100k p/w.

I'm at work so no link, but it's been confirmed on the official website that both will leave once their contracts are up.

Glad this hasn't dragged on, onwards & upwards for our new generation. Best of luck to them.

Wow. Big news!

Have to say I feel a bit sad because both of them played such a big part in the team during these years but at the same time I'm glad they don't drag these too long..

I think Carvalho's and Deco's matter will be sorted out soon..

Worst bit of news for me since the day Wee Pat signed for Everton.

(I of course mean re Joey and not Ballack!).

Where's me black armband...........................?

I thought Deco was sure to go back to Brazil and it was already announced(not sure if it was official, though). I doubt we'll hear anything from Carvalho before Portugal's World Cup campaign is over.

I wonder who can pay Joe the amount of money he wants or is it about the playing time? Maybe Jose will take him to Real Madrid. They can afford to pay insane amounts, but I'm not sure if he would get a game. His style would fit the Spanish league well. I'd rather see that happen than see him move to another Premiership club.

Although a bit saddened by this news I'm glad the club makes necessary big steps concerning the squad. We have had enough of managerial changes but the squad has stayed the same for realtively long time (in Abra-years).

I reckon the fact we are letting Joe go means that we MUST have secured one big signing and that it will be Aguero and he will inherit the much coverted No. 10 jersey.

If Joe knew Aguero was on his way, he would realise the chances of him getting more games were gonna be pretty slim so decided to call it a day.

Kind of a sad day seeing Joey leaving, hopefully he will find back to his form and hopefully we wont see him at Arsenal or Spurs anytime soon... that would be heartbreaking.
