Big Doug Rougvie was a good signing and he did well for us.

If playing today, he'd have won about 50 caps for Scotland. I don't think he got more than half a dozen back in the early 1980s.

If playing for us  today he'd probably be earning more in a week than he earned in a year back then too !

Erskblue, just had a look at his appearances for Scotland and he only played once and that was in 1983. I thought he had played more. By that time the careers of Jardine, Donachie, Greig and McGrain were over so can only think it was Malpas who kept Dougie out of the Scotland team.

Agree about the photo you posted and the one from 1973. Guess the photos were taken from the houses on the corner.

Yeah it would have initially been Frank Gray, then Malpas who kept him out of the Scotland side of that era.

Never realised he'd only one Scotland cap !

Thanks, Erskblue. I had forgotten about Frank Gray.

Lovely guy Doug

As with nearly all players from the 60s', 70s' and 80s' they lost out on the vast sums earned by players today.

But those players are far humble and still in touch with the fans, unlike today's players who have lost touch with the public

I met Dougie earlier this year for lunch in London and he gave me his 1986 Full Members Cup Final winners shirt and A couple of track suits.

A real gent

Joe McLaughlin our centre half in the 1980s. Never even won a single Scotland cap at full international level.

McLaughlin was a good player. Formed a great partnership with Pates. I think he missed out on playing for Scotland at full level because of players like Gough, Hansen, Miller and Narey.

A shame that some fans turned on him. I remember in one game at the Bridge - I forget who we played - when he got loads of abuse. I recall he gave the Benches the V sign.

Blackburn at home first game of the season after we went down. Shed was closed. Joe made a mistake for one goal and put his hand up to give away a penalty for the other, lost 2-1. Joe played the game having just lost a baby. I'm sure us fans would never have given him such a hard time with the facts.

The relationship between Joe and the fans returned to being one of adulation and respect. Just shows that we don't always know the full picture with players lives.

Current day we have people moaning at Willian and now we know his mum has been suffering with cancer and has passed away. These guys are human beings.

Thanks Richard. Had forgotten about Joe losing a baby. As you say, the players are only human.

Good memories from the derby game at the top. McAndrew pen and an own goal from 25-30 yards! Was in the seats, we had the whole stand what a turnout. Played with a white ball as well!! Difficult to see through the snow!
